I don't have any artwork to share. I haven't made any. I would think it's a lot to make good artwork, as I have never made any. I don't know what the requirements are for it. Whatever statements I make on that action are all guessing. lol Potentially one day I can make good art. People will be better off in this scenario. That is if people are left alone totally in terms of this. The thing I am referencing is exposure to my bad art, I wouldn't want anybody around such a thing. This is caring.

I would like this, I think it would help Dad feel like more of a community. Maybe a section to show new entries to challenges would be nice too, it sometimes feels like everything in Dad is a bit isolated and if you want to see what other people are doing you really need to seek it out.

Honestly speaking, this is an exceedingly poor tier list. While some may claim it was written in jest, I'll deliver my criticisms as if it was created as a sincere attempt at sorting artists of similar skill levels into their appropriate echelons. First, I find it peculiar that you use "5, jerry, and 0" as the so-called "tiers". If your intent was to reflect some sort of numerical scale, it would be wise to have more than two numbers, so that the tier list has appropriate granularity. Moreover, it is not immediately apparent what a "jerry" tier reflects. Secondly, it would appear that the users in tier 5 are arbitrarily chosen, though it appears as though the ones selected in that list have aesthetic preferences that lead them to commonly depict anthropomorphic animals, thus lending credence to the notion that this tier list was made in jest. In threads previous to this one, a common discussion motif is the notion that the caliber of so-called "furry" artists is far superior relative to the DAD population at large. Lastly, the fact that you have bundled "everyone else" into an entire tier of their own appears to indicate that you have not done due diligence in actually examining your colleague's work. Moreover, it makes your artist selection process ambiguous. Are you only taking into account users with a certain number of submissions, or who currently hold active streaks? This is left unanswered. There is more to contradict or otherwise question with regards to the tier list you've posted. While the task is not an obligation, I sincerely hope that you create a better tier list.

I think furry artists appear to be better because they draw stuff that shows off their skills better than non furries

There is alot of anatomy in naked bodies, there is alot of muscular vs skinny proportions being shown off. Lots of cartoony but still somewhat realistic facial expressions. The colors are bold and vibrant and often feature some amount of texture to the fur. There is a large demand for polish as it is porn and rushed porn doesn't sell well. and probably many more things I couldn't think of

Everyone else is either just studying or drawing cartoons or anime, these mediums don't allow the artist to show off very much

We should make a challenge that gets everyone to draw something that shows off their skills, kind of like DAIB but more focussed on specifially showing off what you know in an appealing format.... I just don't know what

I can't speak for them but, I could understand if someone just looked at j's most recent page of submissions, coming away with the impression that he's got a bunch of scribbly unfinished study stuff, not realizing that he's got some intense comic skills, and has been doing a bunch of grindy stuff lately. I tried to not go very far back because skills may be different. I only glanced at their work when I knew the artist well since I'm always checking the galleries. I tried to check both good and not so good submissions. I can't really explain the criteria but being consistent was one of the factors.

This is all just my opinion but to me consistency is a double edged sword, because while it's admirable to be able to look through a gallery and see a bunch of finished polished submissions everywhere, daddies who are constantly pushing their comfort zones, experimenting, or even just grinding things they're bad at are going to look inconsistent but are probably making greater gains than some more polished consistent looking daddies. I think there's probably some pareto-like ratio to judge a daddy by (especially daily daddies), forgive 80% of submissions as being the testing grounds that we all go through, the scraps, and hunt out the 20% of polished works as the real measure of their quality. Some daddies don't show their process, their under-sketches and false starts, giving a unclear sense of what it took to get a finished piece, which is why I think it's unfair to penalize the daddies who do show their rough side.

After three, continuous days of struggling, I may have just found the answer to a problem I'm having, though it will likely entail a dramatic restriction on dimension size (probably around the ballpark of 4000*4000 maximum, 10 MB limit). The alternative is investing approximately $225 - $475 minimum per month for more memory, and while I've bought into the STEM memes, I'm not made of money. Maybe ten years later when I'm drowning in Patreon-bucks and merch sales. Man can dream, right?

There are other alternatives. I could consider severely lossy processing (but that may not solve the problem of initial memory encumbrance), and/or auto-conversion of heavy pngs to jpegs. Based on the approach that I take, this may inadvertently fix the duplicate submission issue, which, I have suspected, is the result of bugs due to memory crashes due to hefty file upload sizes.

However, this means an impact to the end user at the end of the day, and I really, REALLY need to know what's important to artists: I don't want to screw you guys over unnecessarily. As far as file size restrictions (currently set at 10 MB), lossy/quality degrade processing (not implemented), or automatic downsizing, I'd like to know what you'd consider inconvenient impact. Or, conversely, if you simply don't care, because all the files are on your computer anyway and DAD is meant to just keep track of your habits.

Would the dimension restriction be a restriction on the area of an image, or would it actually restrict the individual dimensions. Like, would 2000x8000 be allowed since it has the same area as 4000x4000, or would the fact that one of the dimensions is more than 4000 cause problems, because I've seen some daddies post comics with really tall aspect ratios before, would this break that?

Based on the implementation of the gem I am currently using, all images would be resized (to scale) to fit a set of predetermined dimensions.

I.e., if I were to set these dimensions to 1000x1000, a 2000x800 image would be resized to 1000x400.

I may implement custom handling of images with medium-high pixel count with special dimensions, such as this case you describe there, if I take this route. But I would not have thought of that had you not mentioned it. Thank you.

If image dimensions are the problem and not filesize, then I think it would make more sense to reduce the maximum image size than to resize all images. I really wouldn't want to have unpredictable resizing or lossy compression, because I know when I do that on my own end it can produce undesirable results, and honestly I might use this site as an archive rather than saving everything I post, partly for organization purposes.

I take it it's your thumbnail processing that's causing the problem? If so then I would suggest offloading the work onto the users whenever possible. If you allow users to supply their own thumbnail, then when the user does so, your system can use that instead of having to do the work itself. This might reduce a lot of strain with stuff like animations and large images, if the users actually provide the thumbnails (presuming it's optional.)

I would be okay with images automatically being resized to 2000x2000 and a less than 4mb size to be honest.
Even though the place is called dad.gallery, I never looked at it as a gallery but more a progress tracker so the images don't need to be the highest resolution and quality.

I dunno about 1000, I've had some images where text or details became unreadable at below that size. But I never go higher than 1500 pixels. Do people even use resolutions as high as 4000? I guess there could be stuff like comics, but other than that it sounds like complete overkill.

2k seems like the highest resolution I would ever need right now. But I would honestly hate the idea of automatic resizing to a small set of sizes like what youtube does. Out of curiosity, if the limit is higher than 1k, why would you resize a 1100 pixel image to 1000? Is there a meaningful difference somehow?
