How do you get better at form and thinking 3D?

Grab an object. Close your eyes and feel it. Try to image the object inside your mind from this information. Feel the texture, the area in which your hands are at specially, then attempt to do it without the object. Repeat visualization with more complex objects.

I do this with my balls every night and it isn't helping me draw spherical forms any better. Fuck off.

Is this legit advice to understand the way shapes overlap, foreshorten and connect, or a crab saying good artists are cheating again?

I just wanna understand how to move things around convincingly without using an autistic amount of perspective and construction lines (killing the energy and gesture in the process)

Did you try villpu's videos?
His methods make the switch from gesture to 3d very simple.

I would say not trace, but find some images with exaggerated perspective/forms and try to recreate the image as best as you can. Then, take that image and put it on a layer under the original. Trace a new layer over the orginal's lines, comparing it to your own and seeing where you messed up

Honestly your best bet is figure drawing. Just do it over and over again, seeing the same forms in hundreds of different orientations. It takes time to get good.

You just have to work on your perspective.
Remember:
Bodies are movable buildings made of flesh.

you wanna think in 3d? draw from 3d - y'know actual objects or people, in front of you.
the more you do that the more processing power your internal 3d modelling engine has.

Can you point me towards some good resources for these principles? Thanks Anon, I'm gonna make it

Good idea. Will try it!

No, I keep hearing his name. I'll download and watch some. Should I pause and draw his drawings too or just watch and absorb?

Alright!! What should I start with when drawing someone in public or at a life drawing session, should I draw perspective boxes first?

>>4165487
Trying this. It's very hard for me. I don't think I am naturally very good at spacial problem solving or whatever it's called

You could draw a box. They'll probably have moved on by the time you're finished, but at least you'll have a box to remember them by.

Study Steve Huston's lectures from the video course thread. He'll show you what to do.

I would copy a couple of his, play the video at 0.5x speed and draw along with him to really understand what he's doing.
After a couple of copies, try it yourself, it's a lot easier than it looks.

I don't know, but I'm trying by drawing boxes.

Pic related is my inspo rn.

Boxes work but it takes a lot to make it work but the accuracy if done right can't be denied. I've been trying a mix of gesture drawing then doing 3d shapes / light sketching ontop of that while checking measurements that way i can maintain my organic feel but keep it more accurate to what my end result should be especially if i reference areas i'm having trouble with. I haven't mastered this method but i seem to have issues translating straight boxes into end results for some reason probably because i haven't drawn from life or reference enough to understand where i'm fucking up. i wish work would let me draw more.

id suggest finding a taught life drawing session, the teacher will be able to guide you but when I do figure drawing I put down a few very light lines to get the angle of the shoulders, the angle of the hips and the curve of the spine.
also huge thing is to pay attention to the negative space (google it if youve not heard the term before)

Wrapping lines. Draw wrapping lines on everything. Unironically try to feel the form as you draw them.
