You have no control over Twitter's retard algorithm. Worse yet, sometimes it will show you a given crop while you write your post, but once you submit it the crop changes entirely.
What you can do is paste 2 extra pictures focusing on details, that way people will see there's more to the picture even if the crop is shit. Here's an example forcing faces to appear:

How do Instagram stories work? I'm a retarded boomer, what exactly is the point of them? You don't seem to be able to comment on them (bar sending a private message) or like/react to them

I guess i'm trying pretty hard to interact with my followers and it seems to be paying off, but the purpose of this feature eludes me

They're good in two cases:
1) the scanned/photod drawing doesn't look like the real thing, so you add filters or adjust lighting to make it look closer to the real thing.
2) you want to put a little bit of color in the background, but want to avoid the soullessness of filling it with photoshop. So you apply a light filter.

I don’t use filters in the prepackaged Instagram sense but for my traditional work I’ll adjust levels a bit to try and get the digital image to match how it’s seen in person. Cameras are limited especially by color range and relativity, so a lot of times traditional work will fall a bit flat even after adjustments. If you have a favorite painting, I highly recommend seeing it in person, it’ll blow you away.

Understand that user engagement is much more important than number of followers. Increasing the number of your followers that regularly engage with your work will increase the 'relevancy' of your new posts and the algorithm will show it to more people. If you're posting things that no one is liking & commenting on, then Instagram thinks your posts are not good and it'll get pushed further down people's feed, because the algorithm is trying to guess what followers want to see most and shows it to them first.

Stories play a role in further increasing your followers engagement with what your post. If you post an interesting story and your followers watch it (even the few seconds a story lasts for a static image), then that's good - Instagram records that as positive engagement that is relevant to your followers, because the followers watched it and didn't just swipe to the next persons story. Your story will be moved a little bit closer to the front of the queue for everyone, but especially for the followers that really like you - your stories (and posts) will more commonly be first in the stories queue for them. The algorithm likes you and thinks you post interesting stuff your followers really want to see.

If you want to further encourage people's engagement with IG stories, try using one of the interactive widgets you can put in your story - things like the sliding scale, the 'Ask a Question' thing, the 'This or That' poll (can actually be very useful for simple popular opinion critiques, such as seeing how people prefer two different color schemes, for example). In addition to the follower sticking around for the story, they are directly interacting with it, which is more positive engagement.

Ultimately the point is to increase your engagement rate, which further expands the reach of your work, which is good and likely the whole reason we're all using social media. Hope this helps!

Based upon my experiences with commissions in the past, I will revamp my Patreon this weekend to focus on popular characters and personal projects. My goals are to establish sort of a 50-30-20 rule, with 50% personal work, 30% fanwork, and the rest being commissions. What business model would you recommend for achieving this, while still being able to monetize my work?

I want to keep pinups down to a minimum, to focus on developing skills I'll need to create convincing action scenes/poses and background work.

Make more contacts. Make as many of them as you possibly can. You can work on this by reaching out to other businesses to pitch your work. This is self promotion 101 - the ability to identify potential clients that are relevant to your work / style, and the ability to reach out to them with your portfolio and to express your interest in working with them in the future. Do this until you have 2 contacts that are occaissionally sending you work. Then do it until you have 3. Then 4. And on and on, and you'll discovered you've created a network of clients and a steady, reliable stream of opportunities for yourself. Reaching out to people is hard and scary and comes with lots of rejection (or no replies) - many artists don't even bother. But it gets easier the more you practice it. This is how you build a long lasting, real, professional career - through making direct connections with art directors and others who can use what you've got.

Feel free to focus on patreon, but I think you'll find that it's a lot of work for not a lot of return. I think for most people, the time spent building their patreon could be better spent on building up a freelance career.

A hot chick might get extra followers at first but as far as finding work via art vs artist posts it’s more so about having a quick view of your portfolio and not looking like you haven’t showered in a year (or looking like a pedophile). Get a hair cut, shave, etc, take a photo with some decent lighting and don’t leave your cum rags in the background. It’s not hard to look presentable even if you aren’t conventionally attractive. Look clean and try your best to appear friendly. It also helps with networking events and conventions if people know what you look like.
