I decided to wrap this one. There was a lot more I wanted to do with it, but I really need to get back to doing exercises. I think it's good doing something like this in between the exercises to test what you've internalized. It also helps in getting a new bearing on what to focus more study on.

All in all I'm content. It turned into a nice Blade Runner inspired key frame concept piece. So long, and thanks for all the crits!

Yes, but the main problem is that they don't even know that's what they are missing. IF they are complete begs they don't know the basic we take for granted everyone else knows.
I'm not asking to redline beg drawings, I know it's pointless since they won't even understand what to do with that information, but give them a proper guidance on what they should study.

More importantly, this rule would be to curb the practice of begs sending other people to the beginner thread just to feel superior to them.

>>4158197
>Rules only exist if they can be enforced
We have a bunch of unwritten rules around here that the community enforces. Even the "rule" that beginners should post in the beginner thread is policed by the community.

I'm not suggesting we put it as a board rule and that mods ban people sending others to the beg thread, but asking for us to be mindful of this practice and to change how we do it.

Great job on the colours and values. Really like the mood.

There's a few anatomical issues but the ones that stands out the most I think are the arms and torso proportions.

Good rule of thumb I use is elbows line up with the navel and wrist area lines up roughly with the greater trochanter.

Head's pretty great. Some minor eye positioning issues but they are withing the margin of human variance. One thing to note is you should try to keep the iris size the same in both eyes.

The sort of body you've done has a very stylised feel to it (old-school Warcraft vibes)whereas the head is pretty realistic so the two clash. I'd say push it all the way in one of the directions.

I did a quick fix towards more realistic proportions but you could easily do the opposite and exaggerate the face more.

Wow, thank you (Firez I presume?)

Anatomy is a particularly weak spot of mine. I couldn't place the clavicles, for example, so I just skipped them. looking at my initial line sketch I actually did have the arms more proportionally correct. They somehow got shortened in the process... huh
Anyway, what do you recommend I read/study anatomy-wise?

Some studies and doodles. The more I draw the larger the disparity grows between my ability to draw from reference and invent. I was expecting to improve at both somewhat, as reference improves visual library and so on, but no dice. take two artists you like with distinct styles and draw one of their characters in the other's style. this obviously works better for /alt/ stuff than for realism. it can also help to try and build yourself style guides just like you'd do if you were an art director on a production. for master studies, you could try painting a new character into a scene or expand it beyond the border of the existing canvas, you can also do this with your life drawings. whatever you do, always try to be consciously applying what you learn in one form or another instead of just copying.
that zorn study looks really nice btw. think more about the head construction on the gunbuster sketches though.

Got back to my Vamp thing from the last week. All the water stuff is just 10min. test shit as well as the lighting on his armored legs... My main question would be about his pose! I feel like a pose like this is pretty hard to read in general, no matter how good it's painted. A pose with his chest showing and what not, might be more readable. However I like how he's in a mid-jump-kind of pose. Wehh.

I don't need feedback on rendering or his moustache (he dosen't have one, yet). "Is this even a good idea? at all" is the type of thing I'd like to hear...

If that's just five percent I'd hate finishing the 95% of the image with that much complicated rendering regarding all the color, value, texture, brush economy, etc. You have to take into account no one actually cares about all that level of complex detail except you. Also - what you're doing is breaking many rules of composition and painting. What is important in the image? What's not important? Are you highlighting what's important with detail, meanwhile obscuring what's not important with little or even no detail at all? This is why in painting we have to take into account the big picture. If you're painting an environment scene (a forest) the big picture is maybe the trees or one singular trees that capture your eye, it won't be every single branch or the bark on the trunk. Take this as someone who used to be a renderfag.

Yes to all of this. It is a much wiser time spent on taking measures to ensure the bigger picture instead of pouring over small details that contribute lesser impact to the entire image.

I don't know why you seem to give all your women saggy tits. The middle dead chicks tits are extremely saggy like old women have. Maybe that's your preference i don't know but i suggest trying to raise the nipples on most of your paintings to give the tits a more youthful and firm shape. The bottom three aren't bad though. There's alot of different breast shapes you could use that are attractive, but saggy isn't one of them. Google "breast shapes".

Study the muscles of the ass cause that right there is a Hank Hill ass.. They aren't just circles..they should look more like butterfly wings when viewed together from behind. Indicate the Ribcage/Waist/Buttocks/Legs relationship better. It looks like the lats are going straight into the ass. Also the upper legs are bowling pins. There are subtle shapes that differentiate the inner and outer upper thigh. The traps and neck area needs work as well. The traps should be indicated traveling up the back of the neck and twisting as the head is turned, but here the head just looks like its been glued on top of the shoulders. The right calf is also smaller than the left.

Completely disagree, none of the women have saggy breasts per the age depicted. If he raised the nipples they wouldn't look more youthful they'd just look weird. You don't know what saggy breasts actually look like and are giving advice based on your preferences for very perky breasts. Breasts that size that are much perkier are actually kind of rare (or fake), which is fine, but critiquing a well done drawing of a natural, common shape as being badly done is disingenuous.

Pic related is what saggy breasts actually look like, he hasn't drawn that at all. Before/after plastic surgery galleries can be informative for things like this. That anon might also just be European, they tend not to draw breasts so round or high up.

Pretty much all of it, but that's ok if you're just starting. You gave her right hand a good try with foreshortened fingers instead of hiding it, but her left looks like a dogs paw. Her right shoulder looks fucked though like her deltoid got consumed by a flesh eating bacteria. The legs have no crotch space as if they are joined together at the bottom of her pussy. Don't get consumed too much with the details right now...and stay zoomed out 90% of the time so you get a better feel for proportions. Don't be afraid to copy photos...and if you have to trace a hand to understand it better that's ok, but use it sparingly.

So you took a photo of a street and pasted a railroad tamper on the foreground. Then you took a brush and picked the colors straight from the image and hastily re-painted over the original using absolutely random brushes. Then you tried to paint Donald but you had no idea how to do it since you couldn't just paste an image of the character from the internet as you did for the rest of the image.

too close to the sun icarus, slow down and work on your line consistency, but before even that may i suggest taking a further step back and working on fundamentals with your anatomy before diving straight into the sun known as style, repeating styles you love but dont necessarily "know" will only set you back as you are not understanding the way the original artist has contorted things and why they have. keep grinding anon.
>>4170452
invest in a sketch book without lines, or even blank loose paper for a printer 300 pages for like 11 bucks, also, when mark making try to limit yourself to the fewest possible lines, one confident incorrect line looks far better than 40 scratchy "correct" ones. keep doing pages like this, but incorporate some more focus.
>>4170204
line weight, try to vary it a bit more. your construction needs work but the amount of detail you have put into this so far is carrying most of the works weight. dont fall into the trap of thinking that more detail is more better. other than that i really like the style and some of the warped perspective, really want to see updates of this one anon, looks good.

I find it very difficult to make clean strokes. I don't know if i'd call it chicken scratching but you can clearly see that I go over my lines usually 2 or 3 times.
It's even harder when using a brush that does not have opacity jitter on. Despite this, almost everyone I look at has nice lines that perfectly connect with one another such that it seems like large chunks of the drawing were done in a single stroke. Maybe my hand isn't meant for precision, or my canvas is too small.

Do you fill in your base colors before doing values when you render a figure?
The way I do it is I fill my lineart with a single flat color and do all my values in monochrome on a separate layer. Later I just add the actual colors under that and play around with layer modes and stuff until I think it looks alright. I don't like the way I do it, I mean it works but my process is all over the place and inefficient.

Another thing is, how do you know when you're varying your values/hues enough, or if you're going overboard? You almost never use a single color for ALL your shadows, since not all of them are gonna have the same exposure to the light, so you need at least a "light shadow" color and a "dark shadow" color. Same goes for midtones and lit surfaces as well. So if you wanted to render some red clothing in sunlight, you'd use, say, a bright red and an orange for lit areas, and a few shades of dark red and maybe purple for the areas the light doesn't reach.
My problem is I don't actually know how many tones I should be using in the first place. I often use too many which ends up making my forms look undefined. Basically how much value/hue variation do you need to have in a colored object to prevent it from looking dead or boring or muddy?

>> No.4177036

>>4176881
My process is-
-lines
-base color, then use clipping groups for different colors
-shade on top of those colors with multiply/other modes and alter base colors when necessary, etc.

Extremely organized really. I don't ever really consider whether I'm going overboard with the hue variations- sometimes that's actually a style that people prefer. Using warmer tones for sunlight and cooler tones for shadows is just a basic.
Imo just even a slight bit of hue shifting can bring your image from dull to at least not dull. Advanced coloring techniques like adding blues and greens depending on the skin area, or subtle bits of orange for subsurface scattering takes a bit more knowledge. Looking up tutorials and doing research helps. Maybe pyw and I can see if you're actually going overboard. You're not making a rainbow here, just trying not to use white/black.

Here are a few attempts I've made since my previous post. Initially I couldn't figure out how to improve the thing on the right so I took a break and tried to do the bird one on the left. It's really messy and hard to read but I realised that I could be using much darker colors and values on the first thing I was working on, so I went back and added onto it.

I'm probably going to have to redo it since it's so unclean, and I doubt I could recreate it since I kept switching brushes partway through and didn't really keep any consistency. Also I used a shit ton of random colors and just plastered them everywhere, so I'd have trouble replicating what few pleasant hue variations there are.

I'd appreciate any advice you could give me. Looking at this now I probably could've added some skin tones to show sunlight, and defined the lit areas with midtones (although I'm not sure how to do that without making it look like an out-of-place shadow). It feels like whatever I learn I forget the next day, probably a consequence of low IQ

This is a bit tough because you have such incredibly bright colors that are heavily contrasting each other. Your greens/blues are incredibly cold, while the orange is incredibly warm and then turned slightly colder with strange blotches of purple. IMO if you're going to have such different colors, you have to try to blend them, as well as tone down some of the more vibrant colors. Forgive me if this doesn't look much better, but I think you're just going a bit too dark with some of this shading.

If you want to keep the vibrant color style, I'd suggest experimenting more with different color combinations or seeing if you'd prefer to have the more vibrant colors for lighting only. It didn't look like you were going for realism here, so I tried to still keep it stylized, but all you have to do really is consider-

-your colors being too bright
-your shadows being too dark
-mixing the smallest hints of warm/cold colors together if they contrast heavily
-consider bounce lighting

Went and tried rendering it again. Thanks for the advice, yeah usually I pick washed out colors by default, so to combat that I consciously make everything saturated/vibrant which sometimes doesn't really work.

One of my problems was that I didn't consider contrast within shadows, as in I couldn't tell when a dark surface should be darker or lighter than an adjacent dark surface, but I more or less developed an eye for it.

I think I have to study how to render different materials like scales and leather, because her tail looks like a slug and her tits are kind of metallic. Thanks for your help!

That looks 100% better anon, I'm happy you managed to make it work w/ your style, since I think it looks pleasantly vibrant still.

Yeah, different textures can be tough, but with enough time and maybe some studies I'm sure you could get the hang of it. Glad I could help out
