Oh, I meant more like, your attempt at a self portrait, but that's cool too, I think the biggest mistake people make when drawing hair is a lot of people try to draw individual strands, rather than seeing the collections of strands as forms that can be shaded. Like treating a curl as a cylinder rather than trying to draw a bunch of little hairs. It's hard to tell though what you might be doing wrong without seeing it.

Submitting a piece to more than one challenge is fine as far as rules are concerned, but the problem I'm having is that you can have a challenge that sort of erases another challenge. Like with the muse and inktober challenges, if you do the muse challenge, you still have things you have to do outside of it to complete the inktober challenge, and if you're doing the inktober challenge you still have to do something extra special for your Muse submission on that day, so they don't erase each other.

But imagine instead, a month long challenge for october to draw animals in ink, everyone would just do that challenge and would still submit to the inktober challenge and this animal-ink challenge, effectively erasing hoppy's inktober challenge, since no one would actually be making anything specifically for it.

Blind contour is different as it requires you not to look at your drawing.

Look hold draw is just basic observational drawing, one of the main principles being that you should observe your subject (or part of it), hold that part of the drawing in your head as your eyes shift from the reference to your canvas, and then drawing that observation. The reason you want to spend more time looking at your subject than your drawing is that the goal of any study is being able to make good observations, not a finished, pretty drawing. The nice drawing will ensue from having made good observations. AFAIK this is because the author wants you to shift from a result-oriented to a process-oriented mindset. This is further reinforced by him saying that you should restate your lines instead of erasing and drawing them again. That way, all of your lines can be seen more clearly and serve as a reminder of your thought process and for what not to do on your next study. Restating also frees you from the worry of having to make a clean drawing and allows you to purely focus instead on just the act of drawing.

I honestly kind of hate the crit streams because Kringle always sounds really condescending when her redlines and edits aren't much better most of the time

I don’t mind them because it’s one artist’s opinion.
My only crit to her critiques are that she seems to only know how to crit work that’s similar to hers.
I went to art school (only bringing that up as to say I’ve heard hundreds of teacher/student critiques before) and it’s really shitty when you get stuck with someone who only knows how to crit one style. And yeah, I agree when Kringle doesn’t know how to critique something, she comes off condescending and not so much adamant about just not knowing how to critique something.
It’s also pretty easy to critique things unfamiliar to you, because all visual art can be broken down into fundamentals.
