Can't beileve that was 2017, even that post feels like only a few months ago
So much has happened since 2016 and yet at the same time nothing has changed

LAS feels different now though, 4chan feels different
I remember thinking back in 2016 how 4chan felt like it wasn't what it was back in 2007, now I feel like it's even more different
The community feels older, less energetic, nobody is diving things and making a fool of themselves anymore. It used to be a crazy school playground but now it's more like a casual college commons room. Everyone's just quietly getting on with their studies

The most notable difference here is how streaks work. Posting bumps your streak every day, but it won't die until you don't post for a week. I think forcing yourself to draw every day forever is a little harsh, this version allows you to take a breather when you need one, but keep the grindwheel turning in the periods you draw every day. I think this is also simpler than having to choose your frequency (every day, every 2, 3, 4, 5 days...), and more flexible than being locked into a set amount of days to draw every week.

A few other differences is the lack of challenges (I haven't figured out what I want to do here yet. This site won't feature challenges how they've worked on las or dad, but in some other form), comments on submissions can have images, submissions can have multiple images (max 10), submissions can be tagged and you can filter a users submissions on tags on their profile, and there's a dark mode. There's a little leaderboard on the dashboard for who has spent the most amount of hours each month - kind of like the houses system from the discord, except no teams (maybe in the future?). There's also a little scheduler you can plot in how you plan to spend your weeks - maybe good for visualizing how you spend your time.

I'm wondering, if someone takes a look / starts using this, what features do you miss, what would you like to see? What would be some good features that help productivity?

As for my past transgressions, I understand if many don't trust me to keep a site up anymore, but I'm quite happy with the site as it stands already, and I've reflected on how poorly thought out the decisions I made about DED were. I won't be closing this site down. If you all want me to get lost instead that's understandable, I can try finding another community of artists who'd like to join me, but /las/ is comfy, I'd rather stay here.

Well yeah, he needs to stop copying and start deciding which canon he’s going to base his own work on.
Every artist he copies has a different style, he might gain some knowledge in rendering, or fabric, facial expressions, little things but he’s missing the fundamental basis for how these artists start their drawings.
It’s infinitely more informative to find artists’ rough/beginning sketches to see how they start their foundation... you get none of that painstakingly rendering Rem’s left titty.
But maybe he just likes copying shit for fun. I don’t know their main goal if any.

Well, as I said I'm open to suggestions. If there's something you miss or something you wish they did better on other platforms I'd like to hear about it. I've thought of at least a couple of things, but I'm just guessing at what features I think might be fun:

- I like the ww3 risk map idea I did earlier with DAD, I might reintroduce that as part of this website. I'd just need to smooth out some of its edges..
- The thunderdome + elo ladder system in the discord is fun, that might be something I look into. If you don't know what it is, it's basically an art 1v1 with someone where you're given a random prompt and a timeframe and people vote on who did it better.
- An idea from the build the platform thread was having bio pages for your original characters, might be useful for someone who comissions their characters to be able to link to. Not too sure about this, though.
- Having random drawing prompts like the old las topics could be an alright feature to add, but there's already so many idea prompters out there. I might add a towergirls roller instead. One idea with that is having a whole towergirls page where you can see all the drawings of the different characters from everyone.
- I'm looking into some graphs I could add, at least for time spent every day, I'm not sure what else I could graph.

Banana's been doing good, I've been working on this site for myself kind of, I just thought I'd announce it here as well if someone was interested. Also it sounds to me like Banana really wants to use his time on art, but at the same time feels obligated to /las/ because of how much it's given him. There's lots of nuance in the "gradients" of values/rendering
It's far more than just hard edge, soft edge or lost edge
Do a study like this, try to copy the reference as accurately as you can.
Consider how long and drawn out the gradients are, or how sudden they are, or how some start out very dark but then quickly transition to a lighter value and then become drawn it, etc, etc

I've been doing bargue studies for this exact purpose too, do those too

Aside from that I suppose you should learn to control your drawing program so you have the ability to blend any blurry blob you would ever need to. I use Paint Tool Sai

and how you control the blending determines what you create, you can't just smudge randomly, you have to do it in a particular way that suitable for what you're drawing

You did that in Sai? Personally the program's good for digital art but sucks ass in terms of rendering/digital painting. The flat brush (which is the only somewhat good "painting" brush in that program) would be decent if not for the random fucking breaks when you're doing long strokes and the Watercolor tool's great for blending but using it whenever I start a digital painting looks off and artificial/

I really struggle with getting the measurements correct, I'm pretty sure I've gone half of my plates totally off proportions wise, it's tough

Yeah, the blur tool I use in sai is a watercol brush with smoothing pressure set to 100, so it's only blurring.
I do remember in the beginning my blending looked very playdoughy, pic related 2016.
Fiddle around with the settings, practice with it and you'll figure it out

I think I recall seeing that one before, was that done with the default pen brush and then blended with the watercolor tool?

I've tried messing with the settings before but none of them give me satisfactory results, the Sai2 Watercolor tool works surprisingly well but I think I just suck at trying to blend while rendering, my drawing looks okay-ish at the block in stage (I've been trying to use the lasso tool for this lately) but falls apart when trying to add details.

Many people (teachers even) just say "use cool colors in the shadows and warm in the light" which is an ubelievable level of ignorance.
Gurney's book is really good but I think its not very useful for total beginners. Its more of an essay/analysis than a guide.
- Lets use an imaginary red cube standing on a grass for an example. Its a sunny day and the sky is clear and blue.
- There are 2 kinds of light: direct light (sun) and ambient light (sky). Direct is stronger than ambient.
- Everything has a local color - just the color of the object when it's not affected by any light.
The areas that are directly exposed to the direct light will catch the colour of it, so a red cube in a direct light of the sun (which is yellow/warm) will be orange-ish in that area (red+yellow = orange).
- Areas perpendicular to ambient light (sky) will catch it's blue color - so the top of the red cube will be a cooler red (mix the red with the bright blue of the sky). The cast shadow on the grass will also catch a blue hue (because its on a surface perpendicular to the sky). Thats because objects block the direct light which is the strongest one, so the ambient light (which is weaker) gets a chance to affect their cast shadows.
- Also remember that light not only affects everything directly, but also bounces off pretty much everything which is the reason we have reflected light in shadow areas. And thats why the red cube can catch some of the green grass color in the reflected light areas.
- During an overcast grey, there are no strong colors in the light sources so everything looks more like its local colors.
- Also - less saturated local colors catch more of the light source's color. Thats why cast shadows on snow look so blue.
- To sum up: You have to mantain values - so adding more white or black to your colors - but you also must add correct hues. And thats why shading with just black is wrong.

Life was very stressful at this time for many reasons and my art suffered for it, I eventually burned out at https://dad.gallery/submissions/6221 and dropped out of las for a year

Life is still very stressful but significantly less so, in my time off I did a 30 day challenge where I finished almost one painting a day. This improved my rendering skills a bunch
I then did another 30 day challenge where I created 2 sketches a day for a total of 66 sketches, this improved my sketching abilities a bunch
I was hoping to do another 30 day challenge where I paint for 6 hours a day but I didn't have the endurance for it and failed after 2 days

I've come back to las and have been trying to do alot more studies. I really want to improve my skills because everyday I see artists like Chunie, Darkgem, Veramundis and Caraid post amazing art and I'm nowhere near their level. The more I study, the quicker I will improve and the sooner I'll be at their level.

I'm a strong believer that "just drawing" yields jack shit in terms of improvement, it has to be a study, there has to be a question and you have to find an answer. If you just draw all day for years without thinkin about it you'll be like the many poor souls in the "cringe improvement" threads.
I believe that if you studied like 3-6 hours a day (intense study) you'd git gud tier 5 in a year easily. but good luck doing that lol
