Yes, it's something I noticed too while drawing and I was wondering why I keep doing it. I came to the conclusion that the initial pressure on that particular brush was so low that I had to keep redrawing lines to make them show up properly.
Not that that's any good excuse, or 100% of the reason, but it's part of it.

The simplest advice I can give you: think about where the light comes from.
Internet is full of various tutorial that can help you with that. Pick one, read it, try it, ask for crit (in discords for example), repeat. If you know any 3D editor you can use it to test your assumptions about light.

So, I wrote that ultimatum after a small breakdown of sorts. It was sincere at the time I wrote it but things look very different when you're in those low points. It's no secret that I'm struggling with personal issues but I am getting help and things are looking better on the whole, despite some ups and downs. If you're worried, no, I'm not going to off myself. It would be unbelievably hypocritical to the people I've managed to temporarily talk out of that mentality.

But even in that state, I would not have made such an ultimatum if I did not think it was reasonable to meet the condition. Seriously, if I tried my absolute hardest over a little less than five years and I can't make anything come of it, then there is something critically wrong with me as a person. To that end, I'm still counting the days. If I consider myself having failed the objective, it's definitely going to be a really, really low point for me, so don't expect too much in the way of communication for about a week or so.

that being said, i don't like clogging up the threads being clogged up by my personal bullshit. let's drop this topic and talk about art, right?

And in the event you're sincerely thinking of ending it, please reach out to someone in the community, including me. Life can suck, but living is pretty swell.

Merciful christ, dude, I honestly don't know what I am doing. I've never done "real" digital painting before. I saw a speedpaint video that really showed me how different the actual pro painting process is from the academic, sterile approaches that applied the perspective lessons I learned (Eric Olson). For an ACTUAL piece, I learned that I need to start general and gradually get more specific.
However, it's been a super alien approach that breaks a lot of comfort habits. If it looks like I'm doing better, that's reassuring. I'm shit at figure though, so no promises on that.

> Goal in 5 years:
Two conditions.
One, be partially or entirely financially supported by art endeavors.
Two, be satisfied with the caliber of my work given the time constraints, generally meaning marketable to strong competence. In comics, something along the same caliber of Manly Guys / LFG / Dr. McNinja. For individual "pieces", things like https://i.pinimg.com/originals/5a/ec/97/5aec97b0369509e9ff437e809da1f5e4.jpg should be reasonable if not easy for me to do.
As for sketching, fucking around, etc... I want to be able to do things like the attached pic (or iguanamouth's stuff), without concentrated effort, super off-the-cuff.
In the end though, it's a matter of how I feel at that time. Very subjective.

I'd rather not write an autobiography on this topic (people generally dislike me venting or waxing on about personal stuff, as it stands opposite to the professional conduct a site administrator should demonstrate) but if you insist I may indulge the topic at a later time.
To answer your last question directly, if I manage to get past the initial stages of self-doubt, the actual process of drawing is amazing.

>Two, be satisfied with the caliber of my work
this may never happen. i still hate almost every drawing i make even though i couldn't have even made them at all a few years ago.
one thing you should keep in mind though is that progress is not necessarily linear if that makes sense. everyone overcomes different roadblocks at different rates and this can lead to very frustrating periods where it feels like you're getting very little return for all the work you're putting in followed by very fast improvement that can feel almost effortless. the work i'm doing now makes drawings from a year ago look like they were done by someone with brain damage but even those were preceded by 4 years of grinding & i couldn't be where i am without all of that knowledge and all the frustration and tears that it took to get it.

looking through your gallery it seems like you're not doing much color study yet, maybe try adding at least 15 to 30 min of painting from life every day. then if you have enough time, take that still life/plein air etc and try to render it in the style of one of the artists you like. taking those same studies and doing perspective turns, different focal lengths etc would also be a good way to start apply all the construction & perspective knowledge you've been grinding.

Idk, I don't think that's it. Dad has honestly helped me manifest my desire to draw a lot, I've made more finished illustrations in my last few months in Dad than I have in the last year. I know I want to draw, but when I sit in front of the tablet or pull out some paper it's so hard to make myself actually do it cause I'm exhuasted

how?
things like line weight and curves and everything else I can and do note, but anime faces seem to have no real construction or logic to the feature placement and proportions

i mean, if you change them even slightly they look fucked up so I imagine there must be SOME logic, but I can't figure it out. Eyes just look like they go wherever randomly with no respect to the center lines of the face. So I'm just memorizing what looks bad and what looks good.

For instance, I've memorized that in angles close to 90deg to facing, the eyes should end really close to the outline to the face, or it'll look bad. Even if logically there should be more space there. This is just a disconnected fact.

This is a difficult task, to be honest. You see the end result, but you need to know how did the author draw it? Your task is to disassemble the process.

I can not advise on anime topic. I think it's better to check /asg/ thread. But here are my thoughts:
Take a reference. Try to understand the logic that the author used to make picture. If you can't, look for his sketches or speedpaints. If you can’t find them, look for tutorials that give similar results. If this is not the case, then try and error is your last option. But it must be a conscious activity.

>For instance, I've memorized that in angles close to 90deg to facing, the eyes should end really close to the outline to the face, or it'll look bad. Even if logically there should be more space there. This is just a disconnected fact.
In highly stylized images, you have to think in two ways. First one: construction, 3D form, perspective, reality, anatomy, light. Second one: shape, 2D form, composition, stylization, symbols. When you draw anime face start with construction, then swap to 2D/stylization and think in terms of shapes and relationships between them.

It wasn’t until I spent a few years of working with clients (aka just talking to randos) that I realized you DO need to fake kindness/sociability for a while before you realize you actually get a bit of dopamine from having nice reactions from people. My whole school life I was DEFINITELY a shut in and unpleasant because I never realized this. I looked at anyone with a tight friend group as weaklings who needed others to support them. (That’s not to say I completely hate myself for being a bit of a lone wolf.)
But, it definitely doesn’t hurt to try simple things, act interested in what others are saying and ask questions about their life. Try not to talk only about yourself. Give advice. Compliment others. But don’t feel the need to change your entire personality.

I had fun drawing something today. Just a demon-kid in a weird dress. I felt it was a good contrast because lately I've been doing a lot of studies and not personal work.

I have loads of fun when I'm drawing character and monster designs from my head, but I need to find that balance between doing that and studying to git gud.

You don't explictly need to write down things to study, but just make sure you know what you need to study for how to improve, there's always something you can be doing

By doing it like maths I mean
>think critically/intensely about what you're trying to learn

For example
If you're trying to learn how to draw a particular muscle, you can't just blindly copy the reference, you have to look at it from all different angles, think about how it looks in 3d space, draw it from angles without reference, etc to make sure you've understood it.

You could copy this picture perfectly pixel for pixel and it would look amazing but you wouldn't be able then draw it from imagination/from a different angle/in a different pose because you weren't thinking about it like a puzzle to be solved

You have to enter the study with a question
>why do the colours look good
>why do the proportions look good
>how do the muscles turn and twist
>etc
seek to answer that question

Thanks! I've been practicing mindlessly/focusing on the unimportant stuff for the past couple years and lately I've feeling pretty down about my (lack of) progress.

I realized I struggle with critically evaluating my work and determining what to focus on, and I think it's these factors that have been hurting my growth. It sounds kinda dumb but I guess I'm never sure what to hone in on or how I should be spending my time because I kind of need improvement in every aspect.
