I know the eyes look small, but don't tilted objects get shorter?
How do you keep those forms on-model when tilting them in a way that the "eyes sit midway through the head" stuff ends up being thrown out?
Not the whole thing is thrown out, but you rely on the axis more than "where does this shape* sit on this head."

*I'd say form but that implies that [for the eyes on Doraemon, for example] the shape will always be at the top of the head, which is incorrect on harsh tilts.

Hello, guys. I am preparing to do a drawing which has hands in it, so I drew some hands. What do you think?

How do I not focus on the contour of what I am drawing? I keep hearing that you don't want to focus on the contours, does that only count for gesture? Am I over thinking this?

Do you have any general tips on how to be drawing hands so they don't look grotesque?

got my first commission request today but it sounds like it could get me in big trouble. Guy wants a Spider-Man but I heard about how Disney is about this stuff, suing people and shit.

My understanding of the commission process is:

advertising commissions (a blank canvas) and having someone pay me to draw something (Spider-Man) = not illegal, I'm being paid for a service

advertising a picture of Spider-Man I already drew and trying to profit off it = illegal, copyright infringement

probably gesture drawing.
you should learn the correct proportions from a book or whatever you want to use first, but that's only the theory, it's hard to get it right without some practice, and that's where gesture drawings come in.
since gesture drawings only take between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, you can do a ton of them in a relatively short amount of time and after a while you'll notice that the proportions just kinda start to "click" without you even having to think about it.

You need to study perspective, and form. Take Marshal Vandruff's perspective course, and Peter Han's dynamic sketching.
Learn to draw 3d objects from the ground up. Perfect spheres, cubes, cones, cylinders, pyramids, and organic solids in a 3d space with correct perspective.
Practice making them, then pushing them together to make irregular hybrids that stay consistent and true to the rules of perspective until you can imagine an abstract shape, or see an irregular object and draw it out of the fundamental building block 3d shapes.
Then draw everything that's infront of you using the techniques you've learned everyday for the rest of your life. In 5 to 10 years, you'll look like a real pro, in 15-25 you'll actually be one, in 30-35 you'll be a master.

Use simple lines. C, S, and I lines.

Practice drawing with 3-dimensional shapes. Remember that each form has a direction in space. You can only truly draw the figure once you understand 3-d form. But once you understand 3-d form you can immediately draw the figure. It works both ways. Drawing the figure with geometric forms is the best way to learn to draw the figure.

Problems with your figure
1. Complicated and random lines where simple lines would've sufficed
2. No clear forms. Always ask yourself, "am i drawing a cube, sphere, or cylinder?"
3. No direction in space. Your forms lay flat on the paper. Nothing is coming towards us or away from us.

The rest of your problems with clear up once you understand form. Always think form.

I'll try my best to give you a quick guide on this.

Follow these steps:
1. You need to read the sticky.
>>1579290
2. You need to put a ton more emphasis on line-art and drawing things to proportions before deciding to invest time in shading/coloring. (THIS IS IMPORTANT)
Quickest help on this will be "LOOMIS" videos which explain how to draw faces/bodies to proportion without it looking "uncanny".
Proko's youtube channel can help you tremendously. Don't read the loomis books, it will bore you before you even begin to draw.
3. If your plan is to draw anime, you need to follow steps 1 and 2 . The anatomical proportions for anatomy are very similar to traditional drawing except for some features such as the eyes and the width of the body. Use the Japanese books found in the Artbook threads or Anime Study threads for that. Once you understand loomis theory behind constructing a body, you won't need to know how to read Japanese to use them.

Don't be discouraged by having to read books to get good, just watch a ton of videos on these subjects.

You need to practice your lineart a great deal more if you want to become good at coloring and shading. I'd focus on understanding loomis for now before anything else. Also your shading is pretty terrible since it's not possible to tell where the actual lightsource is in the image.

Pillow-shading. Look it up. your painting has no real sense of directional light, I suggest as a pretty high priority that you read on books like "How to Render" and "Color and Light", to educate yourself on how light actually works (shadow and light parts of the painting, cool and warm coloring, etc.) and how to apply it to a painting like this.

Also, study real piglets, yours looks like a muddy mental image of a pig rather than a real one. And don't give me that "IT'S JUST MUH STYLE" bs, It's always better, from a design standpoint, to study your subject before trying to draw it, even if you're not going to adopt a 100% realistic style

Why would you go for the super rendered but anime noses?? It makes sense in line drawings but this is terrifying. I never thought about it like this and now this is all I'll ever think about.

It's certainly illegal. Let's get that out of the way.

But who's gonna give a shit, right? You think Disney is going to descend upon your ass for a single transaction for personal use? No.

So go ahead. Also, make sure you have proof (an email will suffice) that your client understands that if he decides to start selling merchandise with your design (or do any other illegal thing with it) you will not be liable to law suits. Make sure that you get an explicit acceptance of this. It must be for personal use otherwise you're not liable.

So yeah, legal? No. Probably gonna be okay? Yes.

Good luck mate.

Well it's a little more complicated than just Spider-Man. I only posted that to be a tldr of sorts. He actually wants 2 recreations of 2 Spider-Man comic book covers from the 70's. Says he can't afford the actual comics themselves. Speech bubbles, title, and all. The whole situation has me pretty hesitant.

So does that mean that if I got into the convention I'm aiming at, if someone paid me to draw Wolverine, despite having nothing X-Men or X-Men related things advertised, I could theoretically get in trouble? I thought blank canvas commissions were considered a paid service? To be clear, I'm not trying to come at you and say you're wrong, I just want as much info as I can get on the topic since it's such a big gray area apparently.

I'd likely have to scrap the whole project and restart in order to fix the issues with lighting. I have a vague sense of "upper right" for the light source and not much else. I can't really identify the different sorts of highlights and shadows; my grip on forms casting shadows is weak.

I recognize that the planes of her face are - not quite right. Her eye might also be placed- wrong? The roundness of her cranium hits her snout at a sharp angle when it should slope more.

It really depends on where you are in terms of skills. If you are really "super new", definitely do drawabox and Loomis to get a general understanding of drawing and human anatomy.

As for the cute cartoony mascots, focus on forms (shapes) and gestures as a daily practice/routine. Do a lot "draw from imagination"

>BG is too dark, no contrast with linework
I use red and blue to have high contrast with the dark canvas when sketching, but i use darker lines to finish because the high contrast on the lines just makes it look more flat.

>its drawn in perspective but, all the perspective is wrong, gun barrels, foreshortening on the elf, tank, Santas gun arm, the guns
How so? The gun barrels indeed have a different angle to give sense of rotation, the foreshortening on the elf looks fine but the wheels whatever are messed up like i said before.

>no color
>no shading
>everything is single line width, which makes it also look flat, work on your line weights
The purpose of this exercise is not to make a complete rendered image, it's a study on construction, values are another complete beast to deal with. Actually there's some line weight, just very subtle.

>nothing to define form
there's overlap and size difference between the forms, which is enough to give a sense of deep to the image.

>elf looks like a renaissance baby
>elf looks lazily drawn like he was put in a body suit to avoid drawing clothes
I forgot to make the detail on wrist but it indeed looks like a bodysuit and i did on purpose because the sprite which it's based don't give much cloth information besides the boots and green clothing with some bits of red.

>elf is hyper detailed, Santa has no detail
Actually the santa face have way more details then the elf, on the santa you have the definition of the cheekbones and wrinkles on the face when the elf is more flat and smooth.

You seem to have issues with the design, which is not my concern, the santa arm is indeed small and his beard is also indeed merged with the face but all of this is part of the design, if you take a look on >>4122663
you will see how it means to looks like, that's not a redesign study.

>the cropping is bad, like you ran out of room on the page, but since its digital, just move your drawing over

The image have a very clear flow on the composition to the santa until the moon, even if it's not one of my concerns with the image.

>tangents all over the place, elf hat/santa arm, elf foot with gun, wheels with bottom of the page, penis heads in santa's backpack, ammo into guns/tank treads

I agree,i should be more careful with that, tangents mess up the overlap between the forms, affecting the depth of the image.

Your face is not bad but feels a bit unsure about the placement of the parts , feelfree to go further making her face upwards, push the nose out and make the mouth also face upwards even if she smiles. You do not need to make it a full downward facing curve to make a smile just drawing a flat line and pulling only the edges a bit upwards will already make it look like a smile.

Taking a short break from the other drawing. I was listening to some leaked Doom Eternal music and wanted to draw something A N G R Y

Also wanted to try DesignDoll for referencing. Starting to get the hang of this, though I'm a little iffy on the arms and pecs. DD is obviously not perfect for muscle anatomy, so it's tricky to do it by hand, but fun nonetheless. Definitely going to change the head as well though.

Thanks for the redline anon. Admittedly, my head got a little foggy earlier tonight, so I couldn't focus as well. Trying to draw with a high blood sugar is no fun lol. you just need to make sure that your character has his weight centered.
You also picked a pose that has a bad silhouette. Draw the skeleton first them move onto drawing the muscles.
If you want to draw your character leaning over a bit then you need to learn about contrapposto (Hips should be equally displaced in the opposite direction from the shoulders.

1. You're missing the midsection of the torso
2. Thighs need to be a longer
3. Calves need to be thicker (at least at the part w/ the muscle)
4. Right arm cannot rotate out like that (or at least its very uncomfortable)
5. Left arm needs to be longer and bigger. (hand should be the same size as face when laid flat)
6. Neck got too thin when it reached the torso. It shouldn't look like a 'V'. Look up ref for necks.

You're on your way, at least you're drawing the bones and stuff trying to understand the volumes. to learn proportions you just gotta draw from references more and see where your drawing deviates from the model

Left arm doesn't isnt the bad part, it's the right arm that's messed up. You need to imagine how long his hand would be if it wasn't bent. It would reach way past the crotch area. So the elbow needs to be slightly behind the body for it to work the way you want it to. Also you should study a bit more on the muscles of the arm, you seem to be symbol drawing.

At the risk of sounding /beg/ as fuck (which I am anyway), at what point is the "it's my style" claim legitimate? Sure there's always those who lack the basics but refuse to learn cus they're too attached with their work, but surely there's a point where even a very crude art style is legitimate and that the person behind it obviously knows what they're doing. use less lines, do lines more quickly. You can redo lines over and over in digital, take advantage of that. It's easy to end up drawing askew / making things too large at the top when you don't look enough. For example, the top of her hair looks way too wide, which may actually have looked correct to you as you were drawing it.

can you do that pose? how much fucking pressure do you feel on your midback when you do that stupid fucking pose?
are you mentally challenged and literally cant think of a single better non-painful pose?
I mean yours is a tiny bit better because your legs are spread out but given how many times I've seen a pose like that with the legs practically touching eachother is fucking retarded

your torso is stretched out, like they usually are in beg drawings of this pose, your neck is fucking jutting back and not aligned with the shoulders at all, everything else is decent and I don't have any kind of critique for it at this point without it being too advanced for your skill level

Also legitemate question here, I've always thought of my portraits as pretty beg-tier but i've never gotten any response for them.
Is it because they're not beg enough? I can't even tell anymore.
should I move on to Draw?

I agree that I still have a long way to go with painting, that much is obvious, however, doing a 1:1 isn't the only way to do a study, the goal of a study is to learn.

I don't have any professional aspirations.
I have arbitrary goals though, like getting better at portraiture and then maybe getting properly into value and rendering.

it may help to break the forms into fewer simpler ones which share a similar volume as whatever it is you are drawing. taking note of the proportions of whatever style you are trying to emulate will help a bunch too. as for the light sphere; i find it most beneficial to think of the object and imagining the surfaces which are tangential along its surface(imagine a mirror). you are projecting the surrounding environment onto the surface of the sphere. the material properties then determine reflective, dispersal, and refractive operations on particular bands of wavelength. understanding the material behavior and relations between objects and observer, should allow you to work out a visual image with greater ease. keep it up anon, the grind is long.

I think it's important to do gestures exercises before a new piece every now and then. Helps keep you loose and the prevents the forms from becoming too stiff.

The eyelashes are too big on the lower portion.
The Iris is so large that there is almost no sclera. Also It's very difficult to understand what direction/ and which eye this would be on a person because you can't see the Tear duct right away. What reference are you using for this?

i don't think i like this style of rendering much

everything looks like it has the same texture and it has this flat, low-contrast look like they are made of plastic and there's foggy weather

there's something slightly 'off' about the pose of the characters and the anatomy that combines with my previous complaint to give the picture a subtle 'stink'

Thank you I'll look into studying this then. What do you mean be chicken scratching though? Like how the lines aren't solid. Sorry that the image is sideway I didn't think it'd come out like that. I'll make sure it's correct and resized next time.

Are you trying to look for an excuse to give up because "you're too old to make it"?

Decided to practice by sketching an arm and eventually a torso (mostly) from imagination. The arm feels way too stiff and the hand's too small, but I feel like I'm getting there overall. Also I think the bicep's too short.

I always make one or two drawings every 4 months or so and then give up. I plugged in a tablet and popped this out. I wasn't sure how to put his mouth together so I just made a little warble. I guess my question is how could I have drawn this without making the mouth a straight-up triangle but still cute?

ive really been struggling with gesture. i found some videos on youtube with figures that are timed and ive been trying to draw along with them. this is probably my most successful page but i just dont feel like i "get" it. I understand you need to look for the movement in the pose but I struggle to show that without having them look naff.

Instead of drawing along with them, I suggest copying the exact lines they do.

Check out this video. Here's an instructor drawing some timed gestures at different time lengths.

For a beginner who doesn't "get it" yet, I think it's good to just copy exactly what he's drawing while looking at the reference picture as well. Don't bother with the times for now. Look what lines he draws, check with the ref pic and do exactly the same. Pause the video and take it slowly.
