The right pic isn't so bad because her hips and shoulders are slightly angled, her legs are spread apart, and she's wearing form fitting clothes. Left looks somewhat mannish. Julie Bell, the artist you posted, hired bodybuilders and models for her paintings. She's married to Boris Vallejo, an artist with a very similar style, who used the same models she used. (she was also a body builder herself, and a lot of her models were friends and acquaintances of hers) They also photographed the poses for later reference. I saw a documentary with them a ways back.
Frazetta, the artist they copied heavily from, painted mostly from imagination.
Michael Whalen had friends, family, and models pose for a lot of his book covers.
Other artists, like the ones who painted for Heavy Metal Magazine, hired models. It's pretty common for commercial work, like book and magazine covers. Or, used to be - they got paid a lot more in those days, they could afford it.
