Skilled at what exactly? Artists who can render photorealistically are dime a dozen, what is it exactly that sets him apart except the gaudy terrible colors? Actually he doesn't even have a nice painterly feel, it's the most cookie cutter get-the-job-done illustration. I've seen atelier students with a better personal touch than this guy.
He has no sense of dynamism which I think is important for capeshit, no aesthetics or composition, all he does is literally draw a bunch of people standing with a stick up their asshole and looking serious. I said the paintings are shit. His skills are just the same skills of anybody who went through realistic painting training. Atelier students are just as skilled as this guy. Can you please tell me what you would like in these paintings if they were stripped of the capeshit costumes? What does he deliver exactly that is so special? All I see is a bunch of guys in a costume with a hammy scowl, there is nothing else transpiring from the picture that says something about the artist's personal taste. The only distinctive mark is the use of very gaudy saturated reds, but I'm sure using strong reds for drama is part of that basic illustration curriculum.
Ruan Jia is bashed on for being soulless but there's a lot more style and personal taste in this than Alex Ross. I'm not a fan of this but it's way more distinctive despite being rather generic CG Chinese illustration. Alex Ross's art looks like someone who grinded Loomis and Famous Artist's Course and put capeshit costumes on his figure studies. Why do you think everyone likes Leyendecker? Because he's not yet another fucking 50s illustrator who made forgettable advertisements for dumb consumer shit, people say the artist coming through the illustrations. You don't like the artist, you just like Coca-Cola. Without the Coca-Cola you wouldn't even look at OP.
