**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

It's very hard to say where to start from 0. I know this is a generic response, but check out the sticky. Do some exercises, read some shit, and then just draw. Always draw. Once you get comfortable drawing and learning techniques like smooth confident lines, attempt to draw your favorite artists. You can do this soon, it won't be a year-long wait to just do something fun. Just make sure to balance practice with fun drawing so you don't get bored.

How do you study anime heads so you master the forms completely? Most artist do 3 quarters, front or side views without fully understanding most facial features such as cheeks, nose bridge etc. Ask them to draw a head from a lower angle for example, i'm pretty sure they won't be able to get them right and rather than understand the forms, they're going to rely on refs (unlike pic). So how do you master these forms to a point were you're almost a 3D software? Do you grind constructions, spend days learning the forms and eventually you master it? Or in the end, is it just about slowly getting used to each angle after spamming sketches without necessarily understanding these forms perfectly?

If you're trying to understand how to draw complex forms like that of heads and faces then you're really hindering yourself by drawing from anime. Most of the form in anime heads is purposefully flattened and over-simplified for the sake of style and speed of animation. There's a lot of information missing that you'd have to make up yourself.

Just bite the bullet and start drawing from life so you can really learn this stuff far more quickly and effectively. Then you can take that knowledge and apply it to your own stylized drawings.

The more I draw, the more I am convinced this is all guessing. You can place the oval and do few lines for face direction, but the rest is all guessing from experience. Even those are guessing too.
All the constructions you find for them are just always few the same angles. You got front and 3/4 and whats between? Who knows, so you can just make some guesses.
And it's so easy to mess it up if its not perfect. Make the oval bit skewed, place the eyes bit to side, make the space between eyes wrong or the chin bit to the side and it's gonna be all wrong.
I'm sure some people can just imagine those shapes easily and are very accurate at estimating.

drawing something from life and drawing something from imagination is different though, no? i could draw from life pretty well but be shit at sketching, construction, proportions and vice versa. Also, I can get an anime head done and have it look solid, that's relatively easy. but that depends on the angle, a tough one would require more effort to get the forms and volumes right, and usually i'd do that with tons of construction and a brainfuck, and maybe after 2 hours i'd have it done

>>4091751
what i want is to be able to draw any angle possible, not make an approximative guess and hope it's going to look fine by relying on a previous spam of studies of a certain angle... why do we learn constructions, volumes etc then? the heads in pic are still perfectly build and the lines aren't an approximative guess.

Well there were no construction supplied to those heads and its yet again 3/4, front and slightly raised lowered. Probably drawn from the "construction" that only applies to those views, that is a mix of simple head shape and a lot of guessing and fixing. It's always the same angles, always the front and 3/4, forever and ever.
I don't think there is any full method of constructing heads at any angle. You can just make basic sphere, give it direction and approximate the features from memory, experience or guessing.

Don't just "practice" mindlessly.
Find out what's wrong, practice it, try to fix that, then look back, find out what's wrong, fix it, repeat. And don't think to reply "everything about my work is bad", that just means you don't know what's wrong with it. That is for you to find out and fix.
Don't just draw a head in the same angles several times without questioning what looks bad.
"Just draw" is a meme on its own but an extremely helpful mindset if you interpret correctly.

thank you for this, this is something no one's ever told me before. and i've been crying about cleaning up pictures for months. i just wish you didnt redline a less than 5 minute sketch but it still helps nonetheless. i understand construction (a little bit, i guess) but trying to make it have form and look not flat is something harder to accomplish.

i would do hitokaku cover to cover with a pen (dont erase, draw it again if you screw up), but you might want to brush up on the basics of perspective beforehand (specifically eye level, because it seems to be the root of your cross contour issues). always think about whether a form is coming toward you or going away from you.

it's pretty nice, anon. it's got a lot of soul which i took out with my paintover. in a 3/4 view, try to push out the corner between the side plane and front plane of the head more. it also helps to pay attention to heads in real life and analyze the proportional ratio between the side and the front depending on orientation. do this by superimposing a cube on the head in your mind's eye
don't be afraid to have the glasses cover up parts of the eye depending on perspective (although i'm not sure i should be giving tips on glasses considering i've never drawn them before). in regards to the placement of facial features, it should come naturally provided you fulfill two conditions:
1. prerequisite understanding of the perspective involved
2. lots of observation (to remember proportional relationships)

By "by hand" do you mean painterly or loose?
Every digital artist utilizes tools...I'm not sure what you're getting at exactly. The thing that stands out to me in the image you quoted is the clean linework, which was probably made by just using a lot of layers. They very well could have had 50+++ layers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpcnJ1mWH8E
Someone like this paints a bit looser and uses a lot less layers, but still utilizes lasso/color effects.
It's just a stylistic choice, as well as just a method of choice type deal. You have to enjoy the process, some people like keeping layers entirely separate, others just don't. There's no real benefit to either other than maybe the crisp layer artists having an easier time making large last minute changes.
These are types of choices that don't come until AFTER you've gotten a slight grip on what YOUR individual style is which does not happen until you've grown out of /beg/ to a degree.

fundamentally the end result is all that really counts, especially if this is your job. there's no reward for painting honarably.
however, relying on too many shortcuts can make your work feel very 'digital', for lack of a better term and it can lose the human element that makes a drawing appealing in the first place.
the real trick imo is to be able to cheat intelligently & then paint organic details and imperfections back into the image.
hamada
>https://www.youtube.com/user/yoshikadu2011/videos
and asano both do this really well, especially in dededede
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swBhVx9X4n8
you can also create your own hand drawn assets & textures and then kitbash them together.
thom scholes does this with his paintings and it creates a really unique look. you can apply the same idea to anime and comic style work.

with all that said, there's a lot of value in learning to do things the hard way when you're just starting out. you should learn to cheat, not cheat to learn.

CSP assets has a buuunch of really good brushes for free though, maybe you just need to change your mindset - there's no reason you have to use the same brush for both painting and drawing/sketching.

I used these:
https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1607922
and side pencil from here: https://gumroad.com/rondanchan (check out his other brushes too, they're all pretty nice)
and very occasionally, the airbrush tool.

Use different brushes, if you just find it a pain to switch brushes constantly or something, invest some time in setting up your workspace in CSP. The great thing about CSP is how much you can customize your workspace to go with your workflow. Check out CSP assets again, they really have a ton of great brushes that you probably missed by focusing on trying to find something good for both painting/drawing.
The closest thing to a brush that's both good for painting and drawing is probably just your simple hard circle brush like the one in PS, but I don't know what kind of style you're going for.

Good luck, anon.
