>> No.4098830

It looks stiff, it seems as if you didnt get a great gesture. Of course its possible that the model was tense but it seems unnatural.

The proportions are also odd. Head seems small torso seems long and legs seem short.

#1
this is the most visibly wrong desu. planes on the left side all all fucked up & make it look like two separate heads. gesturally it looks like he's slouching and the arm/shoulder just look like a blob.

#2
arm is wrong. left shoulder/delt feels a little squished in the frame

#4
hand is wrong, rimlight should be visible on the hair. ear looks a little strange.
you've also got a weird tangent going on w/ the negative space behind #3's head and the figure to the left of #4

#5
you might wanna add some bounce light under the jaw or something. the shape is correct but the silhouette is making the jaw look misaligned even though it isn't. cast shadow is making the nose look crooked & like he has a cleft palette. unaesthetic unless that's what you were going for.
#6
is the mustache intentional?
wrist doesn't look right and the arm doesn't look connected to the body. right side of face is getting lost in the pink of the shirt

there's also quite a lot of banding going on

Yo, migrant from /toy/ here. Came to /ic/ for feedback instead of /toy/'s customs general cus I got plans that require the element of surprise.

I wanna make a Slenderman custom, but I'm having trouble deciding what sort of proportions to give him.
What do you guys think of this draft? Too Jack Skellington?

I'm not basing him on any particular design, just want something aesthetically pleasing and very inhuman.

Hit that guy with some rim lighting. Also, I'd use a brush to rough up that background bloom so it fits with the nice visible brushstrokes of the foreground.

I'll be honest with you here, there's a lot that's causing issues with this drawing. The right arm (our left) is too long, the legs are too short, the general anatomy is incorrect. You would greatly benefit from using a reference to understanding the forms of the human body.

You also say he's supposed to be looking down? Then why did you angle his eyes/ head/ facial features looking up?

Finally, something useful. Thanks anon, I can see the issues. I don't see how I could help the right arm, so I will keep working on different segments and see what could be adjusted. His legs seem short, because they are kind of cropped off from the whole picture (it's a part I'm not sure I want to readjust, so I didn't include it into the picture, I might get rid of it). I try to look at more pictures for references.
He is looking down, as in with his eyes, but not with his face.

Ahh I gotcha, I think you've tried to throw in too much detail for the size of the drawing in that case. The eyes don't read so well because you've got a lot of other details smooshed together. Try simplifying the features and again, look at reference. The quickest way to see where you've gone wrong is to just take a picture of yourself doing the pose or in the mirror. If it's good enough for professionals like Paolo Rivera, you can do it too.

>> No.4101356

>>4101033
Your first one doesn't read as fur, more like body paint. The second one is a step in the right direction but the contrast is too high and again, reads more like body paint. The third one has good fur texture, but the musculature is too hidden. Your 4th one reads the best. It's simplified fur with the musculature peeping through and your values aren't blown out. I prefer that one the most.

then draw. study an object or photograph. draw from it. then look at what you did wrong.

example, you want to draw a dog. not knowing how to accurately draw a dog, you make mistakes. then you pull up a picture of an actual dog. you correct some of your mistakes, but not all of them. then you realize you need to know what the skeletons and muscles of a dog looks like, so you look up a picture and draw that. then you realize you do not properly know how to draw fur. then you look up a picture and draw that.

now you can draw a dog better than when you started.

you will never get better drawing dogs from imagination if you don't first draw a dog from reality.

So hey there. I needed a proper warmup and was going to do an overpainting on your character but decided to do a ~40min complete reimagining instead. My version is obviously really different from the thing you were doing but that's the thing; I couldn't really tell what you were going for with the design or what materials you were going for. This feedback is more about your whole approach when you're doing a character/creature portrait.

When you're doing a character design you need to be your own client/critic/art director and make clear rules for what you're doing. Ask yourself questions like: "What is this guy?" "What is he made of?" "Where are my light sources?" "Which materials/animals/anatomical aspects do I need to study to achieve this?" "Why am I even doing this? Do I really need to do color if I'm just studying how light works?"

Look at real animals. Mammals have 2 eyes so it's usually a good idea to stick to that especially if you have other weird attributes to your character's anatomy. Pretty much all animals have similar colored eyes so stick to that. If you're not comfortable with the basics don't try to go super eccentric with your design. Stick to what works.

My personal "mission briefing" for this was "Make a cool anthropomorphic dude with big ears and some fangs", so I thought I'd mix some bits of humans bats and felines. You said you had problems with lighting so another part of my briefing was "Make some intense lighting", which lead to this generic setup but I think it reads.

Don't use soft brushes! I only used soft brushes for the vignette. Everything else was hard, painterly brushes. A hard round brush with no opacity jitter from your pen is a good start.

Hope this helped. It probably didn't, but I had a blast. Might render this fucko someday for funzies...

Aye. I feel like your goals and views of yourself are in line with what we're seeing in your sketch.

The upper body looks good for a simple A pose but you were right about needing to study some gesture stuff. You could spend some time studying forearms and hands as they seem to be difficult for you.

The leg muscles are really wonky and I can see that you're lacking confidence there. Looks like you have no idea what's going on inside those thighs but that's okay as it's a relatively easy muscle group to figure out as are the calves which you also seem to be struggling with.

they're from a nomadic nation or a massive fleet of boats that roam the seas together. it's kind of based off the concept of the sea peoples from the bronze age collapse but not by much. while they largely sustain themselves from the bounty of the ocean and small isolated islands, they occasionally raid coastal settlements.

living on the high seas for hundreds of generations has made them quite different than other humans so they're kind of superhuman freaks (being able to hold their breath for almost 10 minutes for example)

You guys are such fucking nerds. As if there is even any way to tell from his seamerc_wip anything as arbitrary as “they can hold their breath for 10 minutes” other than his dweeby head canon. And your advice to him, on this art board, is to make it so they can hold their breath for 30 minutes, as if that changes his design visually in any way. As if he’d even be able to draw that advice into his design. As if he’s even close to a good enough artist to make a piece of art that reflects something so non-visual.

>being able to hold their breath for almost 10 minutes
heh

Seems like it's a good direction. I think the harpoon is overdesigned compared to the rest of the armor, make it a bit slimmer without those huge hollows at the ends.
I would make the armor more messy 'cause the rust doesn't cut it (honestly I think these guys would try to find a solution to the rust, like some sort of coating), if these guys are raiders/pirates it would be impossible to maintain armor this tidy all the time, parts of it should be missing/patched up. Maybe introduce objects that clash with the design, if the guy has been raiding for a while he probably got some souvenirs.
I imagine people living on boats with a small crew and constantly at the mercy of the elements would have superstitious/religious shit on them like lucky charms etc. but that's up to you.
I would also make so the armor has parts connected by string or fabric, so if the guy falls off the boat he can cut his armor off with a knife.
If you want to deliver that they're clearly not "human" anymore I would push the face a bit, make them more fish or amphibian-like. You don't have to go full Creature of the Black Lagoon, just a a bit uncanny valley.

I don't know your setting but you should make up scenarios in your head and see how they apply in history/realism. Even if none of this shit ever comes up it makes your design more grounded. I don't know why exactly but it works this way.

the hoops at the end are there so a rope can be tied to the harpoon so it can be thrown and easily retrieved. I think I will change the armor and make it a bit messier and worn though. I'll definitely give him a bit of an Innsmouth look.

Yeah I got that, just make it smaller. I think IRL a hoop that large would be a vulnerability, and a throwing should look tip-heavy. As it is it kinda reads like a double-ended weapon.

It sort of feels pointless trying to get feedback from faceless people who are patronizing at best and unreasonably malicious at worst. It's hard to connect with faceless people to explore ideas and concepts on a deeper level.

Don't get me wrong, I still like viewing the work from some of the more skilled and creative posters that consistently post their work in certain threads. I also really like the unapologetic nature of some the feedback when it's constructive or earnest and most other places just shower you with unearned praise and platitudes, it's just a shame the jadedness, shitposting and crabbing is so prominent. I just mostly lurk now. I don't know what it is about 4chan that attracts incredibly bitter and resentful people.

You /ic/s believe that getting gut is achieved by grinding and putting the hours and ignore any social interaction. You only get burned and will end up hating art by doing that
You need to realise the importance of having a community. You think that ic is as good as it gets and Facebook and Twitter are just hugboxes for onions boys.
By finding peers you will be able to get genuine and reliable crits, work on collaborative projects ,see how the general skill level is, study together, even maybe find a job by befriending a pro.

I recommend looking at some Proko's or Jeffrey Watt's stuff. Over all I feel like you're approaching your whole drawing process as if were copying abstract symbols from another paper when you should be spending your time trying to fiugre out the underlying forms.

- The legs are too short. Might be the perspective but haven't indicated that the upper body is closer to us in any way so we just have to assume things.

- The muscles on his abdomen are just wrong. I bet the original statue(?) that you're probably copying had the same mistake... Get really good reference that you know to be correct and work from there. If you dont' know what's good reference, you can ask here or something.

- You're working with a pencil but you're not really utilizing the values you could get from that medium. Actually you're making things worse by making the arm closest to us more dim than the one that's much further away. The same goes for the legs. No mid values either except on the legs which aren't even a focal point.
So there you go.

Right I tried doing a redline and added just as many issues as I fixed, my major problem was that the trapezius muscle was completely nonexistent in your guy. I'm assuming your like 15, and if so; you need to clean up your line work A LOT. Really just spend like two hours a day drawing without using those sketchy lines.

but in the mean time, if you don't want drooling cunts like this to thrive AND you're going to keep drawing this kind of subject matter, then yes, please go to the /beg/ thread

it's clear you're confident in your ability but don't forget to flip your canvas to catch the perspective mistakes you made on the legs. fix the legs on both poses and these would honestly be great
