I started drawing 3 months ago. Have no aspirations of making any real money from art because I don't need it.

I want to self publish comic books / graphic novels in the noir style (ala Sin City and the Criminal series). I care more about people seeing my work than really selling it.

Thanks senpai. I was kinda bummed because I spent a lot of time working on the clouds, and then when I posted him on social, nobody seemed to give a fuck. It's just how it seems to go sometimes, sketches and small stuff get all the attention

It's nice to know that people still like him

>>4086975
Thanks as well. I've thought of finding a way to switch a couple times. The pessimism is because I had a pretty shitty day, but all of it still rings true to some point. I'm wary of learning a new trade because part of me thinks it will be like the -3- other times I've had a bad experience with colleges or uni. Or I would hate it because it feels like wasted time not drawing

thank you again. All things considered, I though 25 was pretty old, at least for someone pursuing art as a full career. Its nice to hear its still considered young

you have to push that negativity out of the way. learning something new is scary, which tells me you have some sense. but you should not let that be the dictator. you may find learning new skills, may actually improve your art because you're improving yourself. i highly suggest you get a new career. im assuming you're of average iq or more. stop working shit jobs if you can help it, you'll grow as a human, and your art work reflects you.

Way before, I had wanted to go into zoology( specifically Ichthyology or herpetology). I think my interest in creatures still remains in my work to this day, like you said. The thing was, I was immediately shut down by family, friends and teachers because zoology isn't exactly a safe choice job-wise. Jokes on them, I took a course that was going to land me a job and flunked out on it, ending up in the same place I was pushed away from. Art became my primary focus because of this.

I intend on going back into it, once I establish myself as an artist more and pay off my current debt. The interest is still there, but I figure this isn't what you mean by telling me to upgrade my career, especially since doing so will land me in hundreds of thousands more in the red.I'm constantly listening to audiobooks and watching/ reading a variety of topics to supplement my learning, but then I have to leave that for hours on end to go to a place where people just physically and mentally rot

What courses do you suggest? are you talking trade work, or something different. When I was job hunting I kept looking for security guard or "night watch" since it would give me a ton of un-interupted time to study, but nothing ever came up.

Thank you again for this sorta therapy. Turns out I needed this for everyone else, sorry for the blog-post

Thanks a ton anon. It really means a lot to hear that. If I can inspire you to do anything extra, have it be this; go out of your way to learn something small that is daunting, and do it a little each day. Anatomy is massive and frightening for a lot of people, and I'm no master. But when you take the time to intentionally learn it, bit by bit, it becomes so much more impressive and gives your work such an edge. Once you understand the pieces, bridgeman studies become a ton of fun to do. The last couple of months I've been watching Scott Eaton and it has made a massive change for me. I don't really have the time to sit and watch the lecture from start to finish so I do my best to break it into digestible parts through the week

>>4087637
Thank you as well, anon. It's all been my work over the past months or so. I've always had an issue with putting myself out there more, since I'm naturally an introvert, and day-job forces me to be extroverted for a long time (if you're interested in MBIT shit, I'm INTJ and INTP). I leave and feel destroyed, and I can't muster the energy to create interesting social media posts and engage with people online. I always worry about creating the right tone in my posts, and not wanting to annoy people with retweeting my own work. It never really clicked how damaging this is, until I started to make my portfolio and have gotten 0 interaction on almost every platform, aside from some lucky breaks

I've been trying to get better with environments and scenery. Everything about it feels really overwhelming; even just knowing what elements to work on it feels like I'm tackling something huge. I feel comfortable working at this pace with anatomy, but when it comes to doing scenery and environments I'm totally lost. So thank you- I'm gonna try doing the small stuff over time instead of trying to do everything at once.

I will recommend Noah Bradley's art-camp; 1 is strong for general knowledge, but 2 (and 3 when it is available for dl) since it is more focused on environmental work. It's good stuff and the man really knows his environments. I should add, if it's not time that binds you, but complexity, I'd say that it might be better to take in a bit more then you can chew in a sense. Make notes actively while watching and push yourself heavily. You'll often retain the information better then you expect, especially while you're watching him paint while explaining. The image will stick in your mind and come up when thinking of the topic. Good luck and have fun!

>>4087684
Thank you anon. That sounds like a pretty solid choice. I can listen to audiobooks and maybe sketch if I finish my work early. There are a few 24 hours groceries locally, I'll ask if they have any openings.

I kind of suggest creating fanart if you just want to maximum expose your art right now. Possibly even doing the soulless trendhopping bullshit. Maybe draw some fanart for the latest pokemon games. Pokegirls, pokemon, whatever. Or you can draw fanart for the demon slayer anime which is the "hot anime" of summer 2019 right now.

Check these videos out and see if they give you any ideas

https://youtu.be/I2xblwbEvjA
https://youtu.be/bJw8gGYqXQE

I notice a lot of artists have gotten started by posting fanart often and then slowing transitioning to mostly original art when their accounts got popular enough.

Even if they don't draw fanart, the most popular artists usually stick to one or two major niches that their followers know they can expect when they upload new work (cute boys/girls, furry, fantasy, mechs, porn, specific fetish, cute animals, birds, etc)

>I leave and feel destroyed, and I can't muster the energy to create interesting social media posts and engage with people online. I always worry about creating the right tone in my posts, and not wanting to annoy people with retweeting my own work.

That's kind of me with social media too. Sometimes I wonder if I seem pathetic bumping and retweeting my art. Then sometimes I feel frustrated when I work for a long time on a pic and then it barely gets any likes/RTs. Over 10 likes is an accomplishment for me.

Unlike you though I don't work hard enough

Looking at your twitter I notice you have a good following to follower ratio, it's just that your engagements on your art is sadly low. Maybe one reason for this is because you don't post often enough? I can see it was almost 2 months since you posted another art piece.

It's not really your fault though because it can be exhausting to get the will to draw anything after a full day of work.

I've always stood by the ideology that I will only create fanart of a show/movie/series that I really enjoy. I know how trendhopping can be valuable in gaining followers and views for one piece, but I've also seen my numbers dip back down after posting again. That really stings when it happens. That being said, some of the new pokemon are neat so I could have a little fun painting them. Thank you for the tips and links, I will add them to the art playlist.

Another issue Is that I don't post that many studies that I do. Either because they aren't the strongest, I think they are boring for other people to look at or they are of other artists and I don't want to plagiarize. In this sense there's a big chunk of work that never sees the light of day, and when I'm doing a lot of studies, I just fall off the face of the earth

Thank you as well anon. You're very kind. You all are. This is honestly the most positive feedback I think I've ever received from anywhere. It means even more knowing that it came from here, where any of you could be deciding to tear me down and nobody would blame you, but you all are saying such nice things

thank you all again for the positivity. I never expected it when I first posted. You guys have made my week

>I can listen to audiobooks and maybe sketch if I finish my work early. There are a few 24 hours groceries locally, I'll ask if they have any openings.
As someone who currently works in a grocery store, can I just point out what a BAAAAD idea this is. Groceries tend to run on minimal staff, which means 8 hours of running your ass off and very rarely "finishing your work early." If you work during the day, there's no such thing because there is constantly product moving off the shelf and therefore always something to stock. If you work at night, you will probably be unloading and working entire trailers of product to the sales floor, which could mean literally hundreds to thousands of boxes depending on the size of the store. (I run a SMALL - like D-tier - produce department, it's generally 250-300 boxes every order.) Plus most groceries have cameras everywhere and you'll be in shit if you get caught with headphones in and doodling. And you're always running a risk of straining or hurting your hands/wrists because of all the lifting, cutting boxes open, etc. That might sound ridiculous; but despite all the lectures you'd probably get about "workplace ergonomics," the reality is groceries are shitshows for "ergonomics," and you'll probably be put in the position of lifting boxes in all kinds of strained and weird bodily positions that can mess up your hands, wrists, shoulders, neck and back.

I DO like that I rarely have to talk with people, even working during the day (also an INTJ here), but it's not a good job to balance with art, unfortunately.

Meant to add: if you're highly intelligent, this is going to be even worse, because grocery stores are really stuck hiring bottom-tier people who are either dumb as rocks or batshit crazy and often virtually unemployable anywhere else (ESPECIALLY for stocking jobs on night crews). If they pick up on the fact that you're no dummy, they're going to depend on you to wipe everyone else's ass.

I worked as a grocery store cashier for several years while paying for college. Back then, it was an interesting environment: there were some high school and college kids (me included), even the best of whom would stick around for only a few years before they went off to or finished college. There were also a handful of full-timers (store director, department managers and assistants, pharmacists, etc.) who had real careers with benefits and a potential future with some hope of retirement. Everybody else was no better than part time, irrespective of how many hours you worked or how much you were paid. You had no benefits and had to make the best of the situation.

Years after I left town, the new Walmart down the street put my store out of business.

Really nice work. I understand wanting to draw for a living but not feeling like any of the art jobs fit your interests. I’d still like to make comics but I’m only interested in the weird ones
