What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Try to apply the things you learned from the books to your imaginative works. When something looks off, just return to the text to figure out how to fix it. The most important thing is to be analytical about what you are doing right and wrong.
The drawing you posted would really benefit from stronger construction, especially in the torso.

What's the smart way of practicing construction. I mean I did the books but I'm wondering. Should I rather try to make up poses and maybe post them here if I have problems. Or should I try to make some construction work based on photos of people in different poses? I feel like the former might ingrain bad habits while I don't know if the later will really teach me anything. Especially since doing exercises was just that and I don't really know how much it helped me.

>What's the smart way of practicing construction
Try to invent your own poses from imagination and use your knowlege of the human body to build them yourself. Trying to re-construct figures from photos and life is also good practice, but constructing from imagination is the best way to integrate that knowledge into your mind in my experience

Interesting style, I like it. I feel like you could place the hatching more deliberately, the hatching on the face seems very unnecessary and adds a rough texture, while the loose hatching on the hair doesn't quite mesh with the rest of the style geometric style. I suggest you flow he hair movement with her rising head turn but not too aggressively.

On the hand gesture giving her shoulders a quick upwards bounce before she spreads them apart would add more personality to the action, the current version would feel less forced if her hands were touching before she spread them.

Less intentionally kawaii more high energy and quirky.

I struggle a lot with gesture too. It's one of the things I got the most crit, but now I occasionally get people commenting that my poses are really fluid so I feel like I've made some improvement. I feel when it comes to improvement, it's less an issue of how much time you take and more of how much thought you put into it.
If you feel like doing gesture studies isn't helping you, you may just be doing sketches without putting thought into how they work, you're just going through the motions. It helped me a lot to focus on how the rhythms of the body worked and flowed through the body, and to really think about how to draw the contours in a rhythmic way. It also helps a lot to spend some time drawing poses from imagination after practicing gestures to help solidify the knowledge in your mind, from my experience.

Drawing curly hair is tedious work

>> No.4087428

>>4087323
Are you >>4081469 the same guy? Anyways here's my critique.
Overall, there's not much time to read her action. It's a bit of a timing issue. She's looking down at frame 1, then she looks ahead, then only her right eye moves (!), then she looks to her left, then down again, and then she looks at the camera. That's way too much for just a few frames. Two things you can do: more frames, or fewer actions. Personally I would do this: she starts by looking somewhere, looks at the camera, then looks again somewhere for a few frames and then camera again.

Also, consider using more frames at the start of your animation to give the time to read the character, I'm talking about like 10-12 frames, nothing much. The same applies to the end.

Imho hair needs more physics, she goes up and hair have to follow, and then you need hair to fall down a bit.

Another thing, her blushing lasts for three frames, and that's really fast, maybe it can last more. Up to you!

Keep going!

I cannot think or comprehend of anything more fulfilling than having a daughter. Honestly, think about it rationally. You are feeding, clothing, raising and rearing a girl for at least 18 years so that the world might experience a radiant bundle of happiness and love. All the hard work you put into your beautiful little girl - reading her stories at bedtime, making her go to sports practice, making sure she had a healthy diet, educating her, playing with her. All of it amplifies the joy everyone she meets shall experience when she greets them and takes precious time from her day to make theirs a little better.

Raised the perfect girl? Great. Who benefits? Everyone. Strangers on the street get a friendly bystander that will wish them well, the homeless will get a wealthy and intelligent girl that runs shelters to feed them and find them honest work to get off the streets. The lucky man who marries her will get the perfect partner, and you'll benefit from gaining a second child in her spouse, one who will be a dear friend that thanks their lucky stars you raised such an astounding woman.

As a man who has a daughter, you are LITERALLY dedicating at least 20 years of your life simply to grant your wondrous, miraculous daughter and all the people around her a better life. It is the ULTIMATE AND FINAL reward. Think about it logically

I like how you changed the eyes. Comparing them, the old eyes actually seem to have a cat-like factor them, so that’s good. Maybe for the new eyes you could round out the iris just a little more, since their angularity still make them look catlike. I also notice you changed up the quarter view eye—what was your thought process for that?

Also, I do kinda prefer the old cheeks since they look a bit rounder, but then again you’re going for nonhuman so it should be fine, and fanartists aren’t obligated to replicate the style perfectly, so it’s not a problem.

Since the anon here >>4088705 is going to be lazy, I'll step up.

>>4087997
If you left this alone as flats, or used a cellshaded style, this would be much more appealing.

The linework is bold and strong enough to stand on it's own merits. The soft style shading, combined with the partially colored lines, clash with each other too much. It looks like a sloppy coloring book job over a solid linework.

>>4088315

The loose lines would work if this were a build up towards an animation. However, >>4088863 for illustrations it feels like you are scribbling and erasing to overcompensate for your lack of understanding of form. In addition to glaring perspective and anatomical issues (such as hands and then fact the latter picture looks like the subject is missing the back of her skull).

Work on your line confidence starting with basic shapes in perspective. It will work wonders for your future studies.

>>4088406
Well, the faggot's right on one thing: this is beyond hope.

No perspective, "form" is just a mess of contours devoid of structure, and her face is of nightmares.

>>4088577
Your style is appealing for a children's book, and it's depressing as fuck you went to get off on corrupting that.

Beyond not getting amphibians sporting human styles, and I hope you stop being cumbrain and use this style for good, I have nothing left to say.

>>4087472

>>4087476
Why do I get the sense her hair is not flowing from her scalp? Without a hierarchy of values, here's just no sense of form to it and just gets confusing to navigate.
