The gesture could use some improvement but you have to figure that out yourself a that point. From that position there would be a continuation of the leg and under butt from the right leg--aka the leg on her left. Right now the leg just stops at the crotch and makes the crotch look like it sticks out. Personally I can't see the form in the torso, it doesn't help that the muscles connecting the rib cage and abdomen aren't quite right. Also with the length of the legs, the knees are too low, draw them a bit higher. Also the feet should be angled down a little lower so that They line up with the ground. Don't get me wrong, I don't think its bad, I'm just pointing out which parts you want to fix. Good luck.

You’re losing the edges way too literally. There are always gonna be areas where the values merge and lines get hard to see, but losing edges too harshly can lead to flattening the image and confusing the form. I’m especially talking about the neck when I say that. The outline just dramatically disappears and unintentionally pulls the viewer into the background and away from the object. Losing edges is fine but don’t make the viewer lost in the process

I lul'd.

But more seriously. There are quite a few anatomy problems going on here, as well as a general perspective issue disconnecting the figure from the couch because it's sitting on a different plane from the couch, and the couch is just too small in general. For anatomy stuff I see that the forearms taper too much and are slightly too long. Same with the feet, which have no toes, and need to be longer. Whatever you do though, do not change that expression. It's gold.

You still have a lot of work to do.

First off - stop smothering your work in color samples like that. You can't properly see color if it's polluted by rainbow barf surrounding it. Do artists mix their oil paint on the painting? No. Use a layer to turn off the color palette layer, or use a bigger canvas so it can all be off to the side. You've completely negated the entire reason of having a neutral grey background, btw.

Next, you're not painting skin properly, and I can tell you don't understand cool vs warm colors. Skin is not muddy brown. Skin has all colors in it. Skin is a very reactive surface. It's alive. It has a range of colors, and you haven't fully understood how to do it. You also aren't displaying anything resembling proper lighting.

You need a lot of work on blending. Watch some more videos on it, whatever you're doing isn't working. Work on simple shapes and volumes, like cones, spheres, and cubes, and blending smooth transitions and gradients before attempting something as complex as a face.

And, you need the most work on drawing. Your drawing is so poor, it's going to make it impossible to get a good piece out of this. The eyes are completely wrong, the mouth is...I don't even know what it is. You have a complete lack of understanding of how a face/skull is constructed, and how to stylize that into a cartoon/anime fashion, in a pleasing way.

You're trying to do far too much, at the same time, and it's all falling apart.

This is why we do fundamental work. You're not ready for work like this, yet. Go back to the fundamentals and study and practice them more. Don't take this as "you suck", but more "you suck, right now, but if you go back and do the work, you might not suck later on."

First off, design sucks ass. The only things that hint at her being reptilian are her tail and the belly. Seriously, play with that. I know you probably only drew her to jack off to, but still. Put a little effort in.

Next is your whole drawing itself. Super fucking messy. Idk what brush you use but you should switch to something more opaque. I say this because A: using something opaque and bold forces you to commit to a stroke. It's like using real life paint: once you put it down you can't undo it. So get confident. Also because LOOK AT IT. IT'S SO SCRIBBLY. Did you have a sketch? Because if so you need to layer your coloring under it, so you can keep everything tight.

Light source and color. Where the hell is the light coming from? Idk because you gave up on the background and the only sense of lighting is on her thighs, and it looks gross as hell. If the lighting is warm, the shadows will be cool. Hence why I slapped down some blue shadows on a multiply layer. Also, use that black bg to your advantage. I threw down a new layer and used the black to "carve" out the figure. Plus it makes her pop out more. Also, don't use PURE white on hair and clothing. That's not how light works.

Plan out your work. Grab a reference of someone sitting in this pose. Sketch it. Don't halfass it. And look at the angle of the face. Right now her nose looks like a shitty plastic surgery from the 70's, and her eyes look like stickers. Mouth is so tiny and barely there, I can tell you weren't confident in it. And pay attention to the forms. If she's wrapping her arms around her chest, do you think that bandage is going to be completely straight and flat across it? Fuck no. It's going to curve and hug the forms, like if her boob is being smushed against her bicep, the bandage will follow it. If you still don't get it, go get a chicken breast and handle it. Look at how the light and shadows move with it as you curve it, squish it, stretch it, etc. That's how muscle works.

literally just do it. It seems hard because you just study and sketch and never commit to anything. The more completed pieces you do the less apprehensive you'll feel. And of course treat everything as disposable so both your hand and mind are loose and you don't get tightened up.

For me it was because i was scared i haven't actually learned anything, and it turns out i didn't. Studying and creating go hand in hand so you apply what you learn but also at the same time push your boundaries and get out of the comfort zone. Wish I took pic related seriously when I started.

He has so many triangle motifs and then you just give him a big circular halo. That's pretty lame. You know halos don't have to be circular, right? There are frescoes of saints with rectangular and other-shaped halos. Don't be so boring like that.

If he's an eternal being why not throw in a subtle "infinity" sign somewhere? Hell, why not make his bound arms loop into each other like the infinity symbol? Like actually melding into each other.

Hey anon I like your painting a lot so I did a quick and dirty paint-over, if you don't like what I did that's cool, just disregard it.
I felt like there was too much empty space and that it was making the figure less powerful so I cropped it in a bit to make the figure bigger and more intimidating.
I felt like you could push your shadows further into darkness to increase the contrast in this composition and make our figure more dangerous/mysterious so I darkened them using the lasso/curves tool.
I felt like it was too saturated, so I sucked out a lot of that using hue/saturation sliders.
Finally the composition is already very red/yellow so I reduced the yellow saturation to make the cuffs appear white.
I did very little actually painting, I darkened under the clothes a little, as well as the eyes.

A good painting to study and for inspiration that is similar in composition to this would be Mead Shaeffer's The Count of Monte Cristo.

What I did isn't necessarily better, you lose a lot of the details but it provides more contrast and oomph. Loving your work, keep it up!

Anon this means so much to me! Thank you for taking the time to make this. While working on it I think I was really intimidated to hide details with a high amount of contrast so I shy’d away, I definitely won’t disregard this as you gave the painting a spark that I failed to! Thanks for adjusting the fabric, it’s the end result that I wanted but had no idea how to work towards, and thanks for the painting recommendation too- I love it. You were a lot of help, I appreciate this :)

>> No.4089106

>>4089081
I'd be happy if it helped at all. Contrast is a valuable tool but relying on it can limit you as well. Craig Mullins isn't a fan of excessive darks, especially when's it's black like the Renaissance artists often did, or I did in that paint-over. I can't speak for him but he would probably advocate lighting closer to your original piece or even brightening your darkest darks a bit in order to appreciate the beautiful detail. If you want to go that route I'd still suggest reducing the saturation and sucking out some of those warms. It's worth knowing about the power of contrast though, I mean a lot of concept artists outright abuse it.

I just did some fiddling with the lighting on the pillars and the wall but I can't help but feel like something is off? I just wanted a second opinion.

Gonna throw some nitpicky notes your way.
Necklace needs a tiny bit of shadow beneath it where it rests on the fabric and leather.
Where the leather strap wraps over the white shirt, add some crinkling underneath it, to really show that it's pressing into her shoulder and that the bag feels heavy.
With the necklace, just thought of this, have it kind of snag on the blue fabric. By that I mean: if you have two pieces of cloth, especially woven, resting on each other, they usually catch or get pulled. So have the necklace hang a little less perfectly.
I'd also give her stockings more of a run through them rather than just holes. Small holes become tears and those unravel the material, so it will never look as perfect as the one on her left knee.

My biggest gripe is her face. I know, I know, it's subjective. But her clothing screams "I've been traveling a long time/I'm not from a rich family", and yet her hair looks perfect and her eyebrows are perfectly plucked, etc. She's even got lipstick on, dude! Make her look a little more everyday-looking. (But that's just me.)

Your model is impeccable! Your background needs better attention paid to perspective. You could stand to lower the contrast and dim the background more to have her stand out. Double check your light sources and make sure they make sense.

the only that really sticks out is that you've created a lot of paralel tangents in the background, the one between the picture behind her and the pillar being the most glaring. the stairwells are creating a lot of conflicting shape design as well but if you just darken some of them and use more lost edges it'll be fine. really incredible work so far anon!

I feel like some sprites don't fit right with each other but can't point exactly why.

Well, the first thing I notice is that despite your attempt at rendering it still has a very cartoonish vibe. The skin and hair looks way too smooth, and the shadows you put under the nose and especially the jawline are not convincing. They look more like lineart than shading. Try highlighting more and think about adding a light source to the image, it makes it look more alive. I would also attempt to make the skin in the face more texured. The left eye looks a little off, the angle of the nose does not appear to correspond with the angle of the face (try making the edge of the nose on the left side less sharp, alternatively push in the left side of the face) and make sure the cheekbones follow the same line, right now the left cheekbone appears higher than the right due to the highlighting.

Given the style you're going for, the eyelashes are too sharp and messy, which creates harsh edges that pop more than they should. Eyelids not only cast a shadow on the eyeball, the eyelashes also have a reflection. This isn't something you necessarily need to paint as individual strands, but you should imply it by larger shapes and some softer edges.

This kind of goes for the rest of the painting. Even if you want a soft result, there still needs to be some cleanly stated, eloquent shapes.

Took a quick swing at it. To summarize, your value range is too slim, color range is too slim, and the reason she looks a bit pillow shaded is you haven't localized your values and colors to specific places (ignoring the eyes, brows, eye lashes, hair etc) Also you could use some more sharp value/color transitions to contrast the broader transitions around her cheeks and forehead for example.

This is a good start though.

With "professional" portrait I don’t mean realistic portrait. It was painted from imagination and I’m fine with the cartoonish vibe. By the way I agree with everything you said. Just one question: when you say I should add a light source you mean I should add a secondary light or I should make the main light stronger?

I always get told to push my values more. I try to push them further everytime to a point where I say "ok that’s too much, if I push them further it will look like an alien" but I always get that critique. Is there a way to know when they are pushed enough? Also, I took a look at some faces on artstation and to me their value variations are pretty sublte, pic is an example from Dave Greco (whose art I’m inspired by). I know there is a difference between his values and mine but I can’t see it.

Uh kinda, that guide is a a good general reference for color separation across the face but in terms of values, it's like the way you shaded her forehead is the same way (with the same percentages of light and dark) as how you shaded her cheeks and her chin etc. Everything was too even.

Fuck man I really wish I could describe it better, I've spent the last 20 minutes trying to describe my thought process but it's all nonsense. Just try to focus on contrast. Like contrasting everything. If you have a small patch of black contrast it with a small patch of white or a big patch of light grey. If you have a smooth gradient, contrast it with a sharp transition at some point. If you have blue contrast it with yellow etc etc.

When I paint I try to think of contrast as it pertains to literally every minute aspect of a painting. I think that is what differentiates an amature from a pro.

I dunno, I'm a painter not a writer.
