IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Is there a way I can avoid having to clean up colors outside of line art in photoshop?

I hate having to go back and spend forever erasing painting around the lineart. There has to be some way I can do the colors without having to clean them up. Just the base colors so I can lock the pixels and work on it that way. Ive tried with selection tool and paint bucket but they leave unsavory pixels missing or overlaps the lineart with some shitty hard pixels.

Does that make sense? Is it possible?

it was a quick ten min sketch and the overlay was like 90% accurate. i wanted to jump into that shit. i didnt care if the drawing was off. i intended it to be a value study. also, she has a strong shadow under her nose and cheek line and a couple highlights on her nose and shoulder and forehead because because shes lit from overhead. this makes for shitty values because pretty much everywhere else is de facto uniformly lighted.

Anons you need to look forwards a bit. Every sketch you make today is not relevant in the grand scheme of things you won't remember them in a year, you won't remembers them in a month, maybe not even in a week if you keep doing a lot. They are all just but one step on your journey.

You do not like them because they are a mirror, a mirror you do not want to look into because you are not satisfied with what you are seeing. It is not what you had in your mind, you want it to look like "that" and "that" and one of "those" but you couldn't. You are not satisfied with your present self and that is okay, the road is long. You are just a bit impatient, you want to be there and do the "cool things" now and not later.

You worry if it is not worth all the effort. You worry that all of it was for nothing at the end. It is quite a humbling feeling isn't it? It is really hard to accept it but you can. Just relax a bit okay? There is no need to worry over something as small as those. Surely your life has bigger things for you to worry about right now. So do not keep judging yourself and stress about it, these are just one of many you have done and will do, just move on from those sketches to the next ones

It will be alright Anons. It. Will. Be. Alright.

Yes it will never be what you imagine and that is fine. Because a picture our imagination is fickle, sporadic lacks detail and is full of holes. Again that is okay, images in your mind only serve as an idea, drawing something is constant feedback process between what you see and what you think/imagine. You put it down and then you process what you see and then the image changes in your head. Drawing from your human mind does not work like being a printer. (save for some rare cases of mentally sick people having photographic memories) It is very much an iterative process with feedback going both ways.

>What is the problem with that? How is it art related? If you have difficulty with attention then get diagnosed for attention deficit.

my problem is that i daydream about drawing something that is the perfect idea in my head, and then feel frustrated when it doesn't come out exactly the way it is in my head.

it's sort of like going around with the idea of a turd that you keep polishing, truly believing it's the perfect image.

then you attempt to draw it, and of course it isn't as perfect as the idea you have in your head, and you inevitably get disappointed and frustrated

it's a terrible habit that sets your expectations incredibly high, and it's extremely demotivating to constantly and automatically compare yourself to the perfect drawing, especially when you're just a beginner

Lots of good stuff in this thread guys! I've been doing lots of other work (mostly working on perspective) while I've been away, took a break but couldn't help but draw on my computer with a mousepad. Nothing substantial but posting in this thread makes me feel productive :)

I’m definitely grateful for all the resources both here, and everywhere else on the web. I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to be an artist, or someone who just enjoys creating art. I’m getting my drawing tablet soon, pretty excited about it, but also hurting at the same time over the near-decade I spent not leveling my visual arts skill tree.

I was 23 when I started and am going to be 24 in two months. Why the fuck does it matter how long it takes to become good as long as you do eventually? I've literally never understood this talk of "bros, it's gonna take me 10 years and I'll be an old man by then ;_;" who fucking cares?

Like I had some fucking retard tell me that I was so bad it was going to take 10+ years for me to be good and I responded with, "Well, at least I'll BE good in 10 years." Like how the fuck was that supposed to demotivate me? In fact, it only motivates me more.

Think about it like this. You can start RIGHT NOW and draw EVERY DAY for the next 10 years and then you'll have 10 years of experience. Or, you can NOT start and in 10 years have no experience and fucking regret it. Dipshit.

Start right now. Fuck.

Assuming they aren't copying the linework of something else.

The structure and anatomy is off but it is nice to look at and seems balanced. You can tell what it is despite there being messiness and cluttered lines. There is an admirable level of detail+restrained detail that makes it balanced.

The lines are done well and seem to have confidence. It is also traditional ink (?) so there is no going back, you must have confidence in the general idea of where you place your lines and roll with it.

It all shows an "artists eye" (soul) despite lacking in some fundamental skills. I think having soul is much much more important in being gmi than just being able to show a good understanding of fundamentals. You learn fundamentals, you have or unlock soul.

Honestly though. I don't think there is anyone who can't learn how to draw and there isn't anyone who "can't make it". It's just that certain people with certain mentalities and attitudes can't "make it", but changing your attitude and mindset is actually easy.

Basically, if someone is really bad at art, I wouldn't tell them they're "not gonna make it" I would tell them, "On the current path you are on, with the current mindset you are approaching this with, you will not make it, but it is still possible to change that mindset and get on the right path."

Form of the head and face still fucking my shit up. Same problems with placing the features and getting the sizes right. Eyes always so fuckin massive.

The act of drawing is calming to me and I enjoy the process and the 8 likes I get on insta and the fact my wife always tells me I'm doing a great job even when I cannot look a drawing in the eye without weeping. I know the end product isn't great >>4076049 but I cannot, for the life of me, give a fuck (except for finding things to improve, I do wanna get better at it).

I just want to practice and improve and work on always getting one thing right that I didn't before because every time I do something even a tiny bit better it gives me joy.

If art doesn't give you joy why would you waste your precious time on? Find something that does. And if you really wanna get better at art embrace the fucking process. If it'll take you 10 years whether you like it or not, you might as well like it, no?

Looks like you're just trying to feel it out.
putting the object in a box would help and like the other anon said keeping the lines that go in the same direction parallel.
Or you could just start reading a book on perspective and actually use vanishing points.
Not hot shit at it either, but I gave it a go.

To get your started Anon first I encourage you to watch the Foundations of Light and Shadow video series. This is the most simplest way I can think of for someone to explain this topic. It should give you the basic understanding on how light works. Without this basic understanding you will have a hard time creating the same as you have shown in that video.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV2X3tgajVlHkH3FHxm3rLZWqScFTRhtv

Next watch the Understanding Color video to get a bit of ideas on what color's role in the picture and how to use them and pick them. and How NOT to use them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj1FK8n7WgY

Watch these and understand what they are about. This is not to say I do not want to critique your work but I feel it would require a great deal of theory to explain and it is better if we just get you acquainted with it first.

Good luck!

It's close enough that I know the model and images you used. Mostly because I used the same ones and you'rs are actually better. Just keep it up.

Thanks man. As well as the issue I already mentioned I seem to be afraid of placing the eyebrows on the actual brow line. Like I have an aversion to 'drawing outside the box'.
