this is still a project in progress but i really want to make it true, i spend usually one day per page, the story takes place in america during the 1930s
it follows the story of homeless children who need to find a job to survive in the time when unemployment was high as fuck, so they end up working in a secret underground factory along with many other children where they get enoguh money to survive, but it is a secret to what exactly the factory produces and they want to find it out, also the mysterious aura of the factory gives all of the workers a random curse (for example colorblindness) and overall messege of the story is to think for yourself i am inspired by naoki urasawa, kentaro miura and hirohiko araki (im a weeb dont hate me)

I could always use feedback. I just finished the 100 page first chapter (1 of 12) of my own comic, which I post now and again on /ic/. I think I've made solid progress in a year. I'm currently going through another revision. I don't want to get lost in the process of redrawing everything to fit current polish and skill-level, but I do NOT want crappy first and second draft writing stinking the place up.

The Concord Initiative is about a young, haunted king of a declining Empire in a fantastical 18th century. He tries to spark a nationalist movement to combat the spreading hopelessness of his people; he reinstates an old, controversial program to create a propagandized spec ops team of exceptional national heroes and reformed villains. The situation degenerates.

The relevant sites are Webtoon and Tapas. They both highly favor LGBT/Romance/Slice of Life, but that's just the nature of the webcomic audience, I think. Webcomics are increasingly a "Tumblr" brand thing, for better or worse.

Still, Tapas and Webtoons will host your stuff for free. Tapas has a much better UI and forums filled with other creators. Whether or not the forums have any actual value to offer is dubious at best, but you can drum up a decent amount of engagement that way if you're friendly.

Webtoon has the larger potential audience, but it has a notoriously awful UI, reader engagement, andstructure--not to mention it only accepts 800px wide jpgs. It's oriented for mobile reading, mostly.

There are other sites like comicfury and smackjeeves, but they're much, much smaller. You can start your own website, but that provides the extra challenge of getting people to visit it rather than the huge webcomic aggregates.

Specifically, I'm trying to make three small but polished looking character concepts every week, accompanied by little primary source tidbits rather than straight up descriptions. I'm also trying to write one short essay on creative aspiration/ambition/delusion per week.

>> No.4073454

How can i start a webcomic without any experience in the field whatsoever?

>> No.4073460

>>4073454
You start. You won't make good stuff at first, but I can't think of many comics that were particularly good early on. Like anything, you have to spend quality hours of quality work on it. Fortunately, lots of people are making webcomics, so there's a lot of people to talk to about it and lots of comic making resources out there. Unfortunately, lots of people are making webcomics, so the competition has never been higher for space and attention that has never been more elusive.

Your best bet is to storyboard and script out a basic outline, and then consistently make a page or more of the comic a week. Then, post regularly on a schedule of your choice to a comic portal like Tapas or Webtoon. Consistent updates over the long term (LONG term) is the most reliable method of getting noticed--but even that is nowhere near a guarantee.

Also good job on not rushing impactful scenes but actually devoting a few pages to developing your characters reactions to those situations visually.

I'd say you could work more on your fundamentals though. Your art is functional but not appealing in its own right. Perspective, lightweight, color harmony and composition seem like the obvious areas you could improve on to achieve a professional look.

what screen frequency are you using? It's a bit of a bitch on screen because screentones are meant primarily for print. I have read around that the recommended frequency for screen printing is around 65 but it looks like shit. The dots are way too large.
I published a thing made in a manga style and in the end I did away with the tones in favor of flat greys. What I recommend if you use CSP is to export the image under the "comic" setting, not "illustration" at FULL size then shrinking it to the size meant for print. If you export the image as "comic" at a smaller size the dots will stay the same size and they will look huge, if you export as illustration you get artefacts.

>I'd reccommend using tones with a higher dot density--it still creates that tone texture without making it so rough.
The problem with high density is that when the image gets resized for whatever reason (most sites are adaptive these days) you get ugly artefacts (that are different from moire). This is not the case with scanned manga because, being scanned, the pattern is blurry. But tones have a hard edged, aliased pattern that is not meant to work on screen.
Unless you want to use the dots as a literal pattern, e.g. a polka dotted fabric, you're better off using greys for tone. At least this is what I concluded after trying to work it out.

I've 95% completed the 1hr30mins radiodrama episode for the first episode of this. Full voice cast, narrator, and score.

2. A sci-fi/western set in the future about a town that has to be evacuated when the military frontline falls, and monstrous beast-men come to kill them. There's 500 people in town but only 400 spaces on the blimp. Starts out like Titanic lifeboat scenario, then becomes more of a 300/Zulu small group of people vs huge army battle.

3. Sci-fi in the vain of Alien and Blade Runner about a mild-manner ship janitor who is thrust into a hero role when colonial activists try to mutiny the vessel. Sort of an Agatha Cristie meets Ridley-Scott future scenario.

sounds like fun schlock. I would love to read these but i'm not sure artists would like to do it, especially for bread crumbs.

If you write in a language that goes left to right, but you draw right to left, well that's pretty embarrassing dude.

I have some problems with my work schedule, what causes me to be too slow.
I need some kind of system.
My style is always starting sketches with random panel at random page, it depends what part interest me the most. This causes the whole drawing progress to be a bit chaotic and i have no idea how far i've gotten because the drawings are scattered between pages.

your elevator pitches are boring desu
even if you got an artist to draw the bottom two projects for free, they will come out like crap
good luck finding an artist this desperate who can draw a sci-fi setting and not have it look like shit, there is a large amount of design work involved in sci-fi projects and you need to draw lots of props

Even if you think writing is more difficult than drawing, the art is always the most time consuming part of a comic.

Writer anon here. I didn't say writing was harder, that was someone else in the thread. Writing and drawing are two different crafts. Some brilliant creatives can do both. I'm just passionate about writing. My heart isn't in drawing.

Amusing to see that a QnA offer to ~150 alleged readers garners only three questions, two by the same person. Tough crowd out there. On the plus side, it's allowed me to go a bit nuts with answering each question. It's tricky trying to gauge reader investment/interest--passive consumption is so easy, and I say that from experience.

It's nice to see a web comic thread on /ic/. Allow me to share/shill as well.

Here are a couple of web comic series I'm currently working on.

FaustFall

"All form of Dreg yearns for faith in some form of cause, belief, or guidance. The Countryside beckons such miserable lot to its decrepit domain whereby they scavenge for truth. Many are given purpose through cruel acts while others languish in madness. How so few question this existence under their venerable Titans. Only those who perpetuate this cycle and smother its rejects may know bliss. Saints preserve the wretches whose ears echo this land’s end."

This series is on temporary hiatus while I work on another series, but I plan to return to sometime in September. I've otherwise been writing up new scripts for it; currently made 4 new ones.

And this is the other series I'm currently working on.

Cardinal Junction

"Sequestered between decrepit woods and dreary swamplands, stands the Cardinal Junction – a collective of oligarchical city-states embattled in a 500-year-old civil war. The Abbots of the windy North combat the Covens of the damp South upon the war-torn farmlands of the East as broken souls escape to the West for a life of rail work and mining. The Junctions each seek an audience with their Lamb-Veiled Shepherd, for who they birth and die for alike. Amidst the wisps and corpse-lights, young Agatha Crowley, alongside her compatriots, plunge further into the shadows which inspired this age-old war."

Do you feel like you burned out your only schtick relatively early? An entire collection of comics that only has swords as the unifying theme? No story, no character, no really exceptional jokes after a while. Just swords in sword situations doing sword things.

Hello. I already asked for help in another thread but it was a little off topic. I have a bad English could you give the options dialog for the scene.

That's what I'm working on.

I have 40,000 Instagram followers, I'm getting 1000-2000 new readers a week and most of them will only read the most recent 5-10 comics. It's not a great format for telling longterm stories.
Reddit won't upvote story episodes unless you shave away any mention of character names either.

do you think this will be sustainable in the long run? will you just go full garfield when you run out of jokes?
comedy strips are the only thing that works in webcomics, I have no idea why people try to publish stories

Really digging your artstyle!
I might also be too self critical and feel the need to constantly rewrite and redraw my comic. This is the 4th attempt or so and I hope I can finish it finally.

This page is almost finished and I wanna avoid using tone.
