the education back then teaches you how to be this good in 2D (anatomy, proportion, five views, etc.) long before the age 23.
The truly wow is how he developed the ingenuity to solve problems the way he did. the critical eye, as well as the work ethic, is probably something he got from good teachers.
But to act on it this early is something that most people aren't able to do until at least 40.

There are three other Sperlonga groups, although none are well preserved. They might have been deliberately smashed up by early Christians.

The (now lost) Greek originals from which they were copied were probably made by the same three sculptors as the Loakoon (pic is of Roman copy, original also lost).

I think it's more of a money issue to get good at sculpting life-sized figures, buying marble and setting up a place for sculpting must be expensive. As for getting to this level, I don't know. I think skipping generations' worth of teaching in favor of modernist sculpture has lost a lot of the knowledge, new statues just don't look the same. The stuff I've seen around Italy is on another level.
As for general sculpting I only tried 3D and drawing transfers well into it. I was talking the other day with a friend about buying some super sculpey, the movie industry uses sculpture a lot so it's definitely not a lost art.

I started sculpting a few months ago, on and off again. I think I am slowly improving. I have never used Sculpey (hope to one day) but would highly reccomend oil-based clay like Monster clay or Chavant, very forgiving for someone like me who doesn't really know what he is doing. I actually started with those cheap coloured plasticine blocks that you can get for a few dollars. They are an inexpensive way to see whether you enjoy the medium or not, although you can't bake them or make molds, and are too soft for detail. Basic forms are what you want to master to begin with anyway

>>4070408
It's insanely expensive. Sculpting is by far my favorite art form and I love messing around with clay and other softer materials. But marble is ridiculous. I do it as a hobby and was interested in getting a large block of raw marble to practice with.

The only places I can find to get actual raw BLOCKS of marble, not slabs which are predominitaly used for bench tops and tiling, and are also polished, but actual blocks, are building suppliers and you have to buy in tons and in quantity.

Example. You can buy a minimum of 20 tons of dip marble from Iran at $130 a ton. That's $2600 for the order, you have to factor in shipping which would also be high since it would need to be freighted. Then you have to store the marble. You aren't gonna be storing 20 tons of marble in your backyard.
