Not sure which of you is the real artist:

>>4071362
>>4071367

Next time go on the FAQ and look up how to make a Secure Tripcode to keep impostors away. I'll assume you're >>4071367 for the sake of this critique.

You must not be very confident in making hands and feet since you rendered everything but the hands and feet. You should approach them at the same time as every other part of the body as it affects the entire gesture of the form. If you have difficulty drawing hands and feet, buy a sketchbook and fill it with 4-5 hands and feet per page. Once you finish that sketchbook, you *will* be better at drawing hands and feet. Also, look up speed painting tutorials of fantasy characters and see when and how they block in areas where you have difficulty, and see what they leave in and what they leave out. Hands and feet are difficult to depict in fantasy or cartoon styles because it's hard to balance which details are important and which ones are unnecessary. In this piece, you can even keep the hands and feet blocky and simple, less rendered than the rest of the piece, and it'll still be fine, but don't neglect them entirely.

>> No.4071889

>>4071417

Finding the "stopping point" in a piece depends on skill level, purpose, deadlines, patience, or a combination of those and other factors. For concept art, you don't need to push an idea to full detail if you're portraying an atmosphere or scene as a proposition to an employer or customer, or as a reference for yourself when worldbuilding, etc. A piece can still be *effective* in an unfinished state if it serves a purpose outside needing to be a completed work on its own. What you have right there is probably worked as far or further than most concept artists would need to sell their idea of a castle siege scene. There's deadlines and cost involved, and employers don't want you spending more on a piece of concept art than you have to if it's not entirely necessary.

If you want to push this idea further as a finished piece and you don't know how far is too far, I'd say your skill level at the time as well as patience will be the end-all factor of how far you'll work a piece. If you don't know how to make photo realistic figures, or you're tired of working on a piece, call it quits. If it's digital, save it and add more later on when your skill has improved, or if you overwork it and make it look like shit, revert to an old save.

Try adding more contrast, pushing your shadows further and lightening the bright spots. Right now the underbelly of this creature is lighter than some of the bamboo chutes in the background, and it all has a very washed-out watercolor look. If you need a quick way to adjust contrast just to see what works and what doesn't, take the piece into Photoshop or similar photo editing software, use the lasso tool on pieces of the form or background, and making them darker or lighter. This won't be the fix to your piece, but you'll see how sharper contrast affects the piece, and you can then re-paint or paint over it with a darker palette to resolve the issue. You can then narrow inward and start addressing the texture of the creature's skin with finer detail, as besides the lumpy parts on the front haunches, you can't really make out the texture of its hide. It's okay to leave the background areas around the border in less detail than the central focal point of the piece, but try to push the foliage under the creature to a little more detail and sharpness.

>> No.4071920

I own all the books you referenced when drawing these. Understand that people like Andrew Loomis, George Bridgman, and other illustrators of the late 1800's/Early 1900's would often use blockier, more heavy styles in their instructional books that, if taken at face value, lead beginning artists into mimicking their style instead of using the fundamentals provided to develop their own style. What I see in this work is mimicry of instructional art rather than art that takes the information learned from the instructional tutorials and uses it to push their work to the next step. The men who made these books and made these blocky muscular drawings as a means to train your mind to think about the body's form, not as an instructional book on how to draw blocky arms and legs and people exactly as you see them in their books. Don't try to out-Loomis Loomis or out-Bridgman Bridgman by aping their style, use the knowledge they teach you and apply it to your own. This style is way too iconic to ever be adopted by anyone else.

>> No.4071934

>>4071717

This looks fine, but the pose is very safe and I get the feeling this is the "best one out of the batch", I'd definitely pair it with heads of the same character at different angles and expressions so you can get a full feel for both the character's physical appearance AND the limits of their expressions all in one page. It'll not only show off the breadth of your talent, but it'll also give people a sense of what this character is about, and clues into their personality. It's hard to get a full reading of a character based on one static head-on mute-expression bust. As for technical skill, this is fine, and things like line weight and contrast will improve naturally the more you draw, I have nothing specific about the technical application that I'm concerned about in this piece.

As for drawing women, you may have found out that it's very easy to make a woman look masculine, and rarely do you accidentally make a man look feminine. This is because the sharper, more squared, and jagged the form, the more masculine a character will look. You use very jagged lines which will tend to square the jaws and neck and make women look masculine. Try to keep in mind that women are soft and squishy while men are thick and blocky, and try using rounder lines with more subtle details when trying to capture the female form. Men are blocks, women are curves.

This is very cool use of internal geometry and lines, but it all comes out as terribly flat with no shading to express the contours of these creatures' forms. Try adding simple shading to help make the forms pop, and let the patterns slightly follow the contour of their mass. The fella on the bottom right shows a much better sense of depth and form with the stylistic lined patters than, say, the neck of the creature above it. Try to find a way to make these very cool geometric lines and patters fit on a 3D form similar to the way the bottom right's neck or the far left's scarf does it.

Your dragon's eyes are facing forward atop a smooth snout with a small brow, much like a dog. The cool dragon's eyes are at the side of the head, are much beadier, and are sunk in beneath MASSIVE protruding brows with large spikes. Your dragon's lower jaw is rounded and smooth like a dolphin's. Cool dragon's jowels are MASSIVE, squared, spiked, and go into giant neck muscles. Your dragon has long flowing locks of white hair. Cool dragon has MORE FUCK-OFF SPIKES. Everything about the cool dragon's physique screams PREDATOR. It's a dinosaur. A monster. It looks like it was made to eat and kill and fuck. Yours looks like it reads books and grants wishes to children. Softer appearances are less threatening. It's basically The Virgin Wyrm vs the Chad Dragon. It's not that dragons can't be whimsical in design, but you said cool and referenced a savage looking dragon, so cool = savage. Shrink the eyes, put them on the side of the head behind massive sockets and brows like a fucking T-rex, square all its features, give it a massive lower jaw, and fill it to capacity with sharp spikes. Give it more dangerous attributes.

When you save a sketch or painting in pS. what are your settings for the image. i want to preserve as much of the resolution as possiible and give the view exactly what i see in the pdf file.

also does anybody struggle with adding color/painting? but do fine sketching? its come to my attention i am a poor bastard when it comes to painting and it ruins all of which i have sketched. how can i over come this? what is the proper way to paint over a sketch.what is the first thing you think of as you begin to paint over the sketch.

thanks, i like your picture too but i think you should make the helmet on the guy slightly bigger, it looks like the helmet was clamped to his head. also I would avoid penning in values this early in the game if you plan to make that a colored piece, worry more about form and perspective.

if you're using centered composition like that, i feel like you should try to make the guy in focus seem more imposing, while i like the picture it seems like one of those awkward pictures in a history textbook

I like your attitude, but that compositions isn't working very well. You have lots of shapes that dont interact, and arrows that point nowhere. The big flowing masses in the sky are a nice contrast to all the other straight lines, but they also lack overlap and direction. Your values are a bit off too, the background should be way lighter. That being said, the waterline is really delicious. Keep working, look into perspective and composition more and do lots of thumbnails before next time.

Looks better. But I mean kind of like a gun shot "pow" effect from the starting area. Because you've got residue, smoke or whatever from the original shot that's not just going to immediately vanish.
Also out of taste, I'd make the missile thinner. Scale wise it's hard to believe that projectile came out of that ship just like that. Making the missile thinner and a smoke pow effect from the starting area serves to both make it feel like it has more impact and momentum, and hide the scale difference and lack of a visible weapon more believable.

From a distance it looks like a bizarre album cover, actually.

theres no mystery to making pictures. if you want tpo see improvment you need to find out what you want to improve first. we cannot tell you. once you find out what, look for reference. apply the fundementals to your work, from your reference. example. if you wanted more realistic colors, find some animal paintings and literally copy it. apply it onto your own image.if you want to see better results you should study old master paintings.
