How can I get better at drawing lips? I'm mostly where I wanna be (in context of having been drawing for 8 weeks 1-2 hrs a day) as long as I focus on not symbol drawing but lips drive me crazy. I cannot seem to get any depth and they're always skewed.

No, not really. I know about construction from /ic/, but I never seen local (even teachers or good) artists do that, besides others who learn both at art places and from the internet. It seems as if people were mostly drawing from life till they "feel" everything and construction was seen as cheating or tool for animators. Learning in eastern euro.

No, and unless you're specifically practicing construction, you shouldn't*. Construction and anatomy are what you use to ensure that what you draw from imagination is appropriately lifelike and accurate (insofar as you want to appear that way). I don't think it should be recommended to /beg/s and desu I think it's bad that /ic/ recommends it as often and readily as it does.

*IMO, better to use tracing paper and reconstruct a figure over a ref to guarantee correctness as good practice

Here you go anon I noticed the drawing struggles in a few areas but I thought I'd help fix some of it up where I could without redrawing the whole thing.
Pay attention to nose width and the shadow that follows on the left side of the nose, right now its just a line. look at the eyes and make sure they're each one eye apart, cause right now they're to close.
Eye brows aren't that blocky, think of the individuals hair as well. for a more life like portrait. the chin isn't as defined as the picture, and the hairs on his hair dont look realistic yet. i'd say work more with value and shadows, and pay attention to proportions. for instance the eyes are heavily shadowed adding a lot of personal character. here's the edit I did just to see what the drawing might of been with some more thinking into the proportions and such.

Honestly? Not really. Most people I know who are artists (myself included) started drawing early one, and just did it, because we were drawn to it, even though we had no goals for later on. So when we did start to apply ourselves, we were way past the stick figure stage.
It's not impossible, but I think that natural tendency to draw anyway is key. I've been drawing every day, regardless, and will until I can't hold a pencil. I've never had to force myself. I've been in love with drawing, just the sheer act of doing it, since I could hold a crayon.
I'm not saying it's impossible to learn to fall in love with it, but the odds are against you. I read comments here of "haven't drawn in 5 months", and all I can think is "Then you're not an artist."
Wanting to be an artist isn't the same as being one. It's more than just drawing x amount in a specific time frame. It's way more. If you're not naturally drawn to the activity...I just don't see it happening. You won't be willing to make the sacrifices to get there.
If you want to just learn to draw as a casual hobby, much lower bar, and since you're not going to be seriously goal oriented, sure, why not.

In the last year or so I've wanted to get back into art but I am so frustrated at not being able to draw what I really want to. I can do bizarre characters but I can't draw fine detail, interesting poses, or communicate complicated things. I was the same way with music. I studied it seriously in high school, alongside art, and finally hit a wall, and couldn't push past. So I made a conscious decision to follow art, and not music, and haven't regretted it.

If you don't have the drive, commitment and passion, why force it? Sure, I wanted to be a musician, but at some point I had to admit it wasn't gonna happen. It's hard to do, and it sucks, but it's for the best.

We're surrounded by "feel good" movies of "just keep trying, it will happen" fairy tales. A kid says "I wanna be an astronaut!" - and works hard as he can, until he doesn't make the cut for the program. That's real life. A movie is him making it. A movie of a kid who washes out before getting into the program, not so entertaining.
It's about being honest with yourself, eventually. If I could guarantee every anon here a future as an artist, I'd give it to them - but I can't. It's just not realistic. Some people are just gonna wash out, no matter how hard they want it.

Kind of. "Running" is a low bar to reach. "Winning races as a professional runner" is another.

"Drawing" is a low bar to reach.
"Professional artist" is another.

They're not the same thing. Can you learn to draw? Sure. Can you be an artist? Not necessarily. That's why teaching someone who just wants to learn how to draw is worth it, even if they'll never be an professional artist.

But being a professional artist is more than just learning to draw. It's applying those skills, not just the act. And, to complicate it even more, if someone loves drawing, and does it a lot, I don't care if they call themselves an artist. It doesn't matter. Ballpark. You're missing a couple of subtle things, mostly that her hips are skewed from the shoulders, towards her left, and her left knee is more forward because of it - and the pelvis is tilted down to the left. and pushed out to the right, and all her weight is on the right foot. You have the neck too far back, and...well, that's as far as I need to go. You're in the right direction, study the actual form, alongside breaking it down for construction. Her torso isn't straight, the shoulders and hips are skewed, and you're not showing that. Start there, and try again. It's an awkward pose, and it's not the best pose to be working from, at this level.

From the outside looking into art I've always hated it. I hated art class in school and I thought it was boring. However one day while I was consuming all sorts of media I thought to myself if I could make something so pretty or cool looking stuff that I see online or in video games. So I started drawing people, animals and other stuff was really fun but then I saw magnificent pieces of art. Beautiful sculptures, majestic paintings, and even messy sketches of the old masters were inspiring. The further I dove in the bigger it gets. By no means that I want to climb to the top of the art world. I just want to be able to leave something behind that could inspire at least one person to pick up the pencil, that lump of clay or even that wilting paintbrush like other artists did to me. I know its pretty cheesy but it's what keeps me going everyday. Plus you get to draw and look at naked women a lot of the time.

Everyone started at that point, anyone who claims otherwise has just been drawing for so long, or at such an early age that they've forgotten.
Pic related, despite having drawn as a kid and teenager the before stuff is what it looked like when I picked up drawing again in my twenties.

>Or is art kind of like sports something you’re just naturally good at.
Sports arn't like that, or fitness isn't in any case.
Sports is like drawing in the sense that in the beginning it might be the hardest. Since you have all the pain and frustration from putting in effort, but none of the returns yet.

From your other posts it's pretty clear that frustration and bitterness are your real problems. I had a lot of issues letting go of that as well and i've only been able to make any real progress since doing that.
I never believed in talent, but now I think that maybe the people we view as talented, are just people who's desire naturally outweighs their frustration.

>I never, ever moved beyond "doodle" territory and to be honest with you drawing something larger than what can fit on a sheet of notebook paper intimidates the hell out of me.
I think I understand.
Not sure if it's entirely the same, but i used to have a similar problem.
Too much of my self-worth was invested in being an artist, everytime something didn't turn out exactly as i wanted to it really crushed me, to a degree that was completely unreasonable and out of proportion.
I became paralyzed, unable to try anything new or push myself (still have that tendency to a lesser degree), out of fear of that next stab to the gut.
Also feeling lost in the woods in regards to how to progress while everyone else seemed to have a roadmap bugged the hell out of me, so eventually I just quit in despair.
Picking it up again 7 years later as an old man, and still being a total /beg didn't feel good either^^
But I learned how to deal with frustration and expectation, so the experiance was still a lot better.
Hope you figure out what you're dealing with buddy.

I don't know any artists who use construction while drawing from life, they'll just drop lines to indicate boundaries and axis. Those authors and the books you're thinking of are specifically on teaching construction, not just accurate life drawing. Loomis specifically begins his book on figure drawing by saying it's for imaginative work, and separate from drawing from life.
>"... especial value to the layout man and to the artist for the preparation of prelimanary sketches, roughs, the setting down of ideas, suggestions of actions and pose, where the figure must be drawn WITHOUT THE USE OF MODELS ON COPY."

He then separates sections on doing construction from sections on drawing from life and gives different instructions for each.

I got few problems:
Is it something I'm supposed to complete before moving onto the next chapters? At the rate I'm drawing it'll take at least a bit longer than a week and the major problem is that - I don't really "feel" perspective this way and all I did observe is that the "back" (red) should result from the green lines being correct and that's all. Should I read something meanwhile before drawing 200 more boxes? Drawing over wavy line was much better - I really felt 3D even if technically I have numerous problems for anything that isn't roughly isometric towards the viewer.

Of course I don't. Every single line and mark is make is wrong. It's not helped by books making arbitrary shapes or lines without explaining where to place said lines. That's all Loomis does: Make a line, but I won't tell you how! Or what to look for!
>your pic is pretty self explanatory and easy to copy
Except it isn't. He makes an arbitrary line in the middle of the hall? Why does he do it? Why does he draw it where he does? Nobody knows! So mindlessly make a shitty copy instead of learn what to do.
>if drawing is actually what you want to do
I want to draw. I want to become good. I want to make drawings. I don't want to be beaten on the ground while I bleed to death. I don't want to be told to do a task without knowing what to do or how to do it.

Is it actually?
It's a bit simple without much anatomical detail (which is what you'd want from a normal female figure, no?), however proportions seem right.
If anything the only thing really sticking out to me is that poorly foreshortened arm and unaturally twisting right foot.
Redline maybe for us plebs who can't see what's so terrible about it? that is if you actually know what you're talking about.

Might just be too early for you actually, until you trained your observation skills to judge distances, angles, relationships properly.

These are pretty good.
In some places the line gets a bit away from you, messing with your measurements.
Overall you do well in describing things simply, but especially from the shorter ones it seems to me like you're trying to approach things to complexly right from the get go, which you can kinda get away with in the longer ones since you have more time.

2. Take what you've learnt and try to apply it again and again and again until someone here finally says you did it right.
3. Learn something else.

This is definitely my biggest worry. Did you ever figure one out or is it just being led forward by your gut? I feel like I need a legit teacher/mentor to fulfill that need.

Honestly, that was my first drawing with color pencils. I'm not sure how to add lights/shadows with crayons. I dont know how to mix them.I have 18 color pencils so i think I can use them well

Are my proportions alright? I want to keep practicing heads and faces before moving on to the body and such (although I've studied gestures and figure drawing a bit lately)
I think the game plan right now is to go over Huston's head drawing course again, and practice some facial features from styles that I find aesthetic

It's just a normal fucking study of pic related dude, it looks okay but it's far from being an actual good study, raise your standards a bit you can get to the point of being able to draw something like his drawing pretty fast

Because copying in white and black of a black and white photo is oh so hard, you're right I'm LITERALLY SHAKING because I can't reach this level of skill.
I just wanted to tell that you can do what he did easily but looking at your autistic sperging and your very low standards you're just a shitter who won't put the effort to just fucking draw.

You want recent? I got you retard. Done two months ago as I stopped doing photo studies because they are meaningless to me.
Funny how you describe my drawing as scribbly /beg/ trash while praising the other drawing even though the lines are very messy and faces are all warped up compared to the reference used.
You can throw insults and buzzwords all you want, you're still seething out with absolut shit standards.
I'm done here as well, I wasted enough time and I'm going back to drawing, unlike you. Despite your shitty attitude I still firmly believe that doinc simple studies IS easy.

I totally forgot I had to start real simple with the 1 min poses. I was wondering why I found myself running out of time. I do have some trouble with proportions sometimes, but hopefully I'll get better by keeping at it.

Thanks for your feedback anon.

Thanks for your advice anon. I'm worried I might burn out from trying to do everything. I'll try to take it slow and enjoy it. I'll probably stick to references though, since I'm working on digital.

Thank you again.

>Did you ever figure one out or is it just being led forward by your gut?
I didn't really have a gut feeling, I legitimately couldn't tell what was good and what was crappy instructions.
So I started out just reading and watching anything I could get my hands on. There was enough hidden in the muck to eventually develope a gut feeling tho. Still also wasted a lot of time reading complete shit by people who don't know anything.
A large problem was also, that I didn't really know where I wanted to go. "Just getting better" is a bit too abstract.
So I set myself arbitrary goals like getting good at figures.
But it's like every little bit that you pick up illuminates it a little more, making it clearer where you have to go.
I think it's again one of those things where people have the advantage who just jump in without overthinking it.

ctrl+paint had a roadmap once if I remember correctly but I can't find it atm.
But their video library focuses on the basics and is in pretty logical order, so you could use that as a roadmap.

>I feel like I need a legit teacher/mentor to fulfill that need.
That's fine if you really think you need it, try to read a couple of books first though, before you throw money away only to realize you didn't need it in the first place.
Also be sure to find someone who's work you can actually respect.
Theres a lot of failed/ shit artists going down the art tutor/ instructor route, because they really need money from Pensioners/ desperate schmucks who (hopefully) don't know enough to realise that they have no idea what they're talking about.

I want to get good.
Here is where I am starting from:

Context for pic: Alaskan sailors in 1890 about to make the biggest catch of their lives.

When I get home from work, I plan to start developing and trying to fix whatever is wrong with my sketches.
Anything that helps me understand what I am doing wrong?
Anything I am not doing at all?
