Looking for some inspiration for this style. I'm not sure if it's called anything, what I'm looking for is just full illustrations with flat colors/minimum cell shading and detail.

I had a folder full of these but the usb it was on got corrupted.
>varguy actually does a little too much detail but it's hard to find this style.

“Between Flat and Gradated Tones
What has been said about the balance of straight lines and curves applies equally well to tones, if for straight lines you substitute flat tones, and for curved lines gradated tones. The deeper, more permanent things find expression in the wider, flatter tones, while an excess of gradations makes for prettiness, if not for the gross roundnesses of vicious modelling.

Often when a picture is hopelessly out of gear and "mucked up," as they say in the studio, it can be got on the right road again by reducing it to a basis of flat tones, going over it and painting out the gradations, getting it back to a simpler equation from which the right road to completion can be more readily seen. Overmuch concern with the gradations of the smaller modelling is a very common reason of pictures and drawings getting out of gear. The less expenditure of tone values you can express your modelling with, the better, as a general rule. The balance in the finest work is usually on the side of flat tones rather than on the side of gradated tones. Work that errs on the side of gradations, like[…]”

It's more that textures and gradients automatically add visual interest by making the image more complex. You don't need them by any means, but flat colored works often seem a bit visually uninteresting compared to rendered works because the viewers eye has less to process than a rendered work. Textures can re-add that visual interest, but they aren't a necessity.

gouache has a tendency to reactivate if you paint over it with a wetter paint, that's why you (generally) go from wet -> dry

That guy's right, there is a pretty big proportion issue with the creature's right arm, the artist probably wanted to "add some perspective to it" too impulsively and haphazardly without any guidelines so it's been shrunk down way too much. The pic also points out how disproportionate the lower legs are, where you have the opposite problem. Also, the perspective is set down pretty clearly by that floor but most of the character barely follows it, plus that entire torso looks really, really wonky. It's to a point where the style just cannot mask it.

Just Google what tangents are lol?

the anon is right. The arm is off. Shoulders should be in line and them not being in line, but the elbows being in line creates an issue where the upper arm is far too short on the far side.

I'll redline it if you want.

Ok, so this should be enough to see the issues. The background is too consistent to apply that level of foreshortening to the body. If consistent with the background, dude's shoulders would be like on the right. that foreshortening in the shoulder/arm would be fine IF the background had some fisheye effect and a less extreme downward viewing point.

>> No.4096101

>>4095933
Even angled away, the shoulder should be higher. You have the character on a bg plane that dictates the foreshortening on the character, but the character doesn't adhere to it, so it looks wrong. It's not so much the arm as it is the point of connection in the shoulder. Notice how I redlined the shoulder higher on the left? That's how it should be based on the background. The line between shoulders on the right is directly across, while the legs are tilted. The point of view is high, and the thus you're looking down at the character. Directly across as in the left picture implies that spot on the character is level with the point of view, which is impossible because we're looking down at the character, based on the background.

It's hard to put into words but it shouldn't be drawn as it is. It's a subtle thing that most people would miss, but if you want it to be correct it needs to be changed.

This is the best way i can come up with showing it visibly. I'm not saying he needs to have a symmetrical pose as I drew here, but I am saying a few things.

If his upper arm on the far side is angled away, it has to be drawn on an angle that implies that. You have his shoulder lower on the far side, which implies that he's either leaning in a weird way where it would be hard to keep balance, or implies that the view on the upper half of his body is head on, not downward. The problem there is that everything else implies that it is downward. Your drawing would work if the background and legs weren't disagreeing with the torso. To fix this, draw the shoulders level in the same plane as the background (as i did here) and to show the far arm being angled away, draw the upper arm out from the body.

P.S, i hope you don't think i'm shitting on you. I like the drawing a lot. Just trying to help you make it a bit better.

Here's another option for fixing it. In this one, I kept the twisted angle of the torso and just elongated the upper arm. It keeps the tortured look of the pose you were going for, but fixes the issues at hand. He looks slightly off balance to me like this, but that's really just personal opinion.

Also, as for your original question in this thread about making the colors look better.. I'm a linework illustrator so I know a lot less about color than I do about posing but my suggestions are to push the values a little bit. Throw some darker darks in there and maybe make the background a tad darker the farther away from the point of view it gets, into the background. Should make the setting more atmospheric and creepy. Dramatic lighting always improves a picture if it's meant to be creepy, in my opinion. Then if you do decide to add in candle light, it'll stand out and add even more visual interest to the picture. And if not, it should still make it more moody regardless.
