Life is good. Japan is comfy. I could go on a long rant about how cool this place is, but I don’t wanna encourage more people into coming here. Already too many foreigners.

Life is peaceful though, I do the ALT thing in the mornings, it’s a fun job, and pays well, though this month I’m on holiday. I’m gonna go visit a friend in Osaka and check out Kyoto after Comiket. Should be fun.

Other than that, I’ve been keeping busy with commissions, though now I’ve finished them all, so it’s full blast on TS to try and get a solid contract with Visa sponsorship for next year. If it doesn’t work out, then just keep trying till something works. Already here, I got nothing to lose really. Eventually something will happen.

He also has a second ability that grants him Limited matter manipulation. This allows him to change things that he touches into something similar in size. For example, he can turn a guitar into a battle axe. Not big on fighting so he tries to avoid it.

I didn’t go to Comiket to sell, only to look for industry contacts and just kinda get familiar with what Comiket was. I was told by the staff there when we asked, to just present my stuff to Shueshia directly. That, yeah, it’s true SOME publishers do go to these events, most of them are indie or small groups. They said that I should instead go for one of the big guys, all of whom happily accept submissions for review/pitch whenever you want, M-F, by appointment.

What blew my mind about Comiket though is how massive it was. Over 500,000 people attended, and it’s a HUGE lot. It’s basically triple the size of Comicon, making it look like a joke. And what’s crazy about it is that the focus of the event is the Doujinshi market. There are no Seiyuu, and none of the big manga publishers even show up really. It just goes to show how much more lucrative comics are in Japan. Plenty of artists simply make their living off of attending these events and selling their stuff here and on Mandarake.

I read a couple books, but none of them teach you anything really. Learning screentones is a two-fold attempt. First you gotta learn CSP inside and out, and 2nd. You gotta do manga page studies. Find manga pages you like. Trace over the drawing in pencil, and then ink and tone it as best as you can while having the original next to it on the same file for comparison. This will help you break down the different techniques the pros use in HOW the apply tones to manga, as well as the weight of the lines, and the types of hatching they use when stylizing their work. Once you get comfortable with it, start doing figure studies and so forth in stylized form. Draw the models in manga style, ink and tone them as such as well. Also, one book I recommend for learning and practicing inking techniques is “Pen and Ink Drawing” by Alfonso Dunn. BUY the book, and draw from it. It’s well worth the money.

Actually, that Trump manga I made ages ago sold over 1000 copies, and it still trickles sales to this day, and that’s with basically zero marketing. I’ve also been commissioned to make manga by American clients. Most of my commission work are actually that, character designs, and manga pages. Turns out there’s not many westerners who can draw manga accurately enough, so demand is high, and I can charge pretty high per page.
Idk if you wanna count that as “pro.” To me it’s when I’ve made it here in Japan. But I suppose that as a standard definition it counts

well that makes sense considering they are artists not writers. None of my oc's have backstories, I only use general themes like "she's the prankster in the group" or "simple peasant girl that her mum scolds after coming home with a dirtied dress after following along with her two 2 childhood friends adventures. A cool almost stately demeanor, but she's not actually stately at all, she's as silly and naive as you would expect a young peasant girl to be."

Eeek, it's been many months since I've really sat down and drawn instead of meandering with doodles and scribbles without thought once in a fortnight so this is very rusty. Going with the comfort food of drawing, OCs; both tasty and something you've had a little too much of.

I forgot how good it felt to use traditional equipment and put pencil to paper. Satisfying stuff. I hope this feeling of being excited and looking forward to draw returns in full because work has sucked the energy out of drawing for the past while.

Nah. I live like an hour from Shueisha’s offices, and they take submissions by appointment all the time where you can get actual feedback from an editor. Additionally, they hold contests like that one for the same prize money every month, and the Tezuka one like 3x a year for 3mil ¥, if ever wanted to enter. I mean, sure the entries have to be in Japanese, but that’s hardly a hurdle for me anymore.
