What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Head is out of proportion in relation to the figure, it's too small. Although the torso is slightly twisting the extreme twist from the neck makes it feel very uncomfortable unless you're an owl. >>4060201
Drawing in cartoon styles can be very helpful if you want to add more life and exaggeration to your realistic drawings, and help give you a better understanding of shape design. If you want "pure" realism it won't be very helpful in that regards.
If you want to understand cartooning, you should avoid just copying the styles of whatever cartoons are popular today and instead try to dissect how cartoons/anime function aesthetically and construction-wise.
What you're doing is symbol drawing, you're taking the "symbols" of cartoons and anime that you know and are placing them on the face without much regard for how a cartoon or anime face functions aesthetically or construction-wise, it's pic related but in reverse.
If you really do want to pursue stylized art, you should take a step back and start analyzing stylized art you enjoy in the same way you would analyze a realistic work. What are the shapes and forms at play? What is the effect of those shapes on the image? How does the artist distort reality? Copying artists and learning how their style works can be a very good exercise, especially for the stage you're in right now.

I wouldn't say learning any particular style is more valuable than any other. Draw in whatever style you like.

Clarification because I typed this in a rush and didn't think my words through, and made some confusing wordings
>you should avoid just copying the styles of whatever cartoons are popular today
>Copying artists and learning how their style works can be a very good exercise
This sounds contradictory but what I meant is you should avoid taking surface-level elements, like anime/cartoon eyes and noses and haphazardly dropping them onto face shapes. Instead you should try to study the stylistic choices that go into a style in the same way you would study something like a figure. An anime nose, for example, seems like just a line but it's actually representing a lot of visual information in a super-simplified form, like pic related shows. What you need to do is reverse-engineer those simplified features to figure out how they relate to the object they are depicting, instead of just drawing a tiny line for a nose and calling it a day.

Thanks. Your picture kind of tells me something I needed to hear again: draw what you see, not what you think. I think I do want to learn stylization, because I find pure realism unrewarding. I can spend 20 hours on a realistic drawing and it's basically a shitty pencil/charcoal rendered photograph, IMO. I want to get to a point where I can create anything I want from """scratch""" with some practice and I think from what you are describing, that will take me to really understand general shape design. Thanks.

Your color palettes are appealing, but I think you should work on your rendering. The way you shade does not describe forms very well, especially on the upper body. I think it would help to try and break down the body parts into simple forms, and lay out very basic shadows while considering the light source before you go into detailed rendering.

the thing is the whole pyw has become a straw man to spread this cancer mindset to invalidate anyone who doesn't agree with you or you don't like, and if you want any kind of help you have to be at least smart enough to differentiate between "lmao back2 loomis, kys, disgusting" and "your lack of fundamentals and bad understanding of the matter makes your art look like a piece of shit".

and the later is where people just want to push this meme, because you weren't another of their circlejerk of buttbuddies who praised this guy regardless of how bad it was, now im not defending people calling you shit unless they say why, and here's the truth if you did something wrong and someone points that out it doesn't matter whether the person is mean or kind that won't change the facts, but no you gotta disregard every kind of criticism that doesn't follow your hugbox hivemind as "unless you are this good you can't say anything" just to hide the facts.

not those anons, but I think you are completely blind to stuff like pic related
I know it doesn't explain much, but you can clearly see one of these looks better than the other
personally I'm not good at all, but I think you should think about other stuff while drawing
You are focusing 2 much on details and linework and rendering etc, but your drawing doesn't look good on a fundamental level, basically you are polishing turds
Like, I think you should step back and look at some artists you like, and study them, like ask yourself why does their shit look good?
You are polishing turds, I know it sounds bad, but if you stop trying to improve and find out new knowledge you have failed
The fundamentals are what hold something together and what make something interesting. Your shapes, your sense of form, your composition and perspective and your values.
If these things are good, you can literally just render something for 10 minutes and it will still look good.

Thanks, anon. I've been working on polishing up the designs so that makes me glad to hear it.
I haven't done much of the other characters, most of it is just doodles and sketches so I can get more comfortable with their designs and tweak them as I go. Pic related is the only character I've given any major design overhaul to so far, really. I'm still not settled with it, though.

Thanks for the advice and crit, anon. Honestly I really don't want him to look too feminine, I more of wanted a "princely" sort of look, young and pretty, but still a bit masculine if that makes sense. I think I may have made his body too young-looking for what I intended, and I kinda want to keep the big nose because I feel it makes his face a bit more distinctive.

I don't think your stuff is bad, you clearly have a fair bit of knowledge in anatomy and construction. I feel what the other anons are getting at is that you art lacks appeal, and I don't mean that in a "muh style" sort of way. I think you have a poor sense of shape and composition, which brings your works down significantly.
Take the girl's twintails, for instance. The ends of them go in so many different directions it weakens the composition by leading the viewers eyes in no clear direction.
I did a quick paint over to try and better show what I mean, I am not the best myself so apologies.

Face is skewed slightly, she has a thousand yard stare and it seems like her eyes are focusing on her nose. While in the construction stage, flip the canvas multiple times until it becomes second nature - for every form you put flip the canvas once or three different times until you get rid of whatever skew that is present.

Using construction helps avoid going out of proportion and studying what we perceive as cute will help you understand how to bring about a pleasant face. It's all in the proportions.

Consider changing the drawing from a white background to a more calming and darker background that would either compliment or bring about the colors from the figure more.

Well I'm glad. I know you were a bit concerned about changing them too much whenever it was brought up in that thread.

I have to be honest that I have a vested interest in your journey with this. I have several characters in a state of flux (while I get out of /beg/). So it's interesting to see how characters and style evolve when introduced to others and whether or not I'll prefer them before or after.

Also cute boys that look like cuteboys look better than boys that look like girls. In my semi-humble opinion anyway.

Not that anon, but the biggest flaws I feel it has are
>1. Your lineart is scratchy and not confident
>2. Your shapes are messy and not confident
It's harder to criticize this than most of the works on /alt/ because you use a much more simplified and cartoonish style than most people here, but I feel your core issues are that you don't seem to have confidence in what you're doing. You have a simple, graphic style, but you don't push your shapes. You play it very safe with a simple half-circle and line for a hat. The face is long, but it's shape is ambiguous.
I think you should look into some shape-based character designs and try to examine how they work. Shape language would be a very useful thing for you to look into, as well as shape design. Examine how your favorite cartoonists use shapes to build their characters and incorporate it into your own work.

>> No.4063512

That's a fair thing to say anon, thanks! For the record, it was a sketch to begin with so I never intended for the lines to be perfect. Although for a sketch I do think a lot of it is a bit "lazy" I suppose.

Also, legit question here, but does it count as "not confident" if I never felt "unconfident" while drawing? I don't want to sound like I'm ignoring your advice, but I never really felt like that when I drew it, although to be fair, I pretty much originally planned on just doing his face as opposed to doing a full on bust. Like you said, I definitely could push the shapes, absolutely. Although I feel it's more as if I don't fully know how to do so, rather than that I wasn't confident, because I was confident in my shapes (even if they weren't all that great like my lines, even if it's a sketch). I suppose it's similar to how a tween aspiring to become an artist is confident in their crappy ms paint drawings despite them being crappy ms paint drawings, not to belittle my own work of course lol.

>> No.4063519

>>4063512
Not him but confidence is derived from having the knowledge of things like shape language. When referring to confidence, its less actual confidence and more of a "it looks like he knows what hes doing." Your lines show hesitation, they are short and scratchy.
