It's the way he applies highlights. It gives his digital paintings a very sterile and plastic look that just isn't very appealing.

I don't think highlights are the problem in that face. He has this idea that if you want to make something "cute" you have to space the eyes as far apart as possible, it's like he tries to create appeal based on a few rules and guidelines but doesn't have the taste to back it up.
Also he has a suspiciously heavy reliance on reference, most of his courses involve 1:1 copies of a photo which is odd for an animator. It's like he gave up on a lifetime's animation career to become as close as possible to yet another YouTube illustrator but he's not half as good as people who did this from day 1.

I got a subscription to his courses and it was all really poor. The only good stuff is the animal anatomy but it's very very limited, you get much more information on a book like Goldfinger and what Blaise talks about is African animals like lions and elephants. If you want to draw house cats there's nothing specific. It's so strange that he's good at animating and drawing animals yet the actual stuff he's supposed to be strong at treated so dismissively. His entire course should be animation and animal anatomy. Instead he's got tons of stuff like illustration, which he is not that good at, tons of copying photos 1:1, stuff on color and other digital painting shit he is NOT good at, some watercolor stuff he is mediocre at.
I don't understand why he decided to be so dispersive, most people who look at his website want to draw animals in the first place.
