Colours got better, left version looks cheaper because of black shading, right one is more painterly. Good job on keeping the shadows uniform, in old one they are messier. The head is quite small in new version but hands look better.

The pose doesn't make sense anymore, lost all the action. I think 2016 could have been an illustration for a video game, 2019 just feels dull and stiff, the idea isn't clear, the design isn't clear, it couldn't be an illustration for anything.

I don't think this person's skill is worse, they've just been focusing on the wrong things like colors, rendering, detail, and neglecting what's important, the overall idea and feeling of the image. I think this person changed everything in an attempt to prove they are better in every way than they were (the pose, lighting, story, design), so they threw out the baby with the bathwater. They already had a solid story/pose, they really just needed to push what they already had.

I would not be surprised if the images were the opposite years.

fuck, I'm only half a year in and this hit too close to home
to avoid this I think you need to ask yourself what you'd draw now if you had all the skill in the world, and then draw it; after you're finished take a step back and ask what worked and what didn't, and then work on what didn't so you can improve and then try it again later, rinse and repeat
this looks like very directionless grinding, I've been doing the same shit for months now and can attest how painful and unfulfilling it is

The detailed studies proof to me that you are willing to invest time and effort into art so just assign some of that effort to figure drawing and gesture studies for example.

and all the following posts you clearly reply..
At this point, idk if you are trolling which shows too much determination or you actually believe that anyone who decides to give an opinion must post their work to be a valid criticism, which is sad for an artist.
Yeah people here can be assholes by not explaining "what" is wrong with the picture, but being an asshole doesn't mean being "wrong".

I could tell IMO the first one looks better, the composition looks better (characters giving weight to the left and the right, balanced enough), coloring too, the lights and shadows look better in the first (too much shadows in the right picture for an open ambient scene casting just a little shadow in the ground and the sky isn't cloudy enough for that), and what people probably pointed out, the poses, the first one looks too good! too much energy, you know they are engaging in combat, the poses don't look stiff at all.

So yeah, beforehand you say it, im not going to post my work, because i dont need it to prove a point here, im giving you my opinion, you could open your mind, swallow your pride, take it and improve for the next time, or just "cover your ears" and call me a troll or whatever you like, at the end of the day it's your choice, you were the one who posted your art here, you decide, after all, this is 4chan, don't expect a pat on the back.

I think you have pretty competent fundies, you should just set aside some time to experiment around and collect inspiration. Make a Pintrest board or something and dump all your favorite artists on so you can get a big-picture view of what you like aesthetically, so you can better understand your own tastes. Maybe imitate some of the styles and techniques of your favorite artists.
You clearly do have a sense of taste/aesthetic from the 2019 work, I can see you like anime, and eroticism that isn't in-your-face. I think you just need to push it further and develop it, add some more mood to it.

> because I'm not gaining new knowledge

When you meticulously copy something you notice interesting details about said thing and remember them for next time.
I.e. if you do a study on just noses say; you learn how lighting at different angles affects said noses.
In particular, you have a long way to go on the eyes.

Watch some Proko or read some Loomis on the 3D representation of the eyes, draw like 10 or so, then you'll find huge improvement the next time you try drawing eyes.
You can even use a reference for eyes, not "copy" but at least use a picture to check you're approximating real life.

like you are an absolute beginner, and if you want your art to be any good you should accept this as soon as possible and start studying some fundies..
Like think about it, you could get angry at me for pointing this out, and keep at it for 10 more years, and your art wont improve, or you could accept it
and see MASSIVE improvement in just one year. You don't even have to put the time. You are such an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER, that just 20-40 hours of studying
the FUNdamentals will give you 10x the improvement you had in a WHOLE year.

10 days, 1 pic every day posted to /vg/

Starting to understand the workflow to doing stuff and can somewhat hold a stylus in my hand without having everything instantly spazz out but need to start actually doing proper fundies instead of just drawing from refrences and imagination.

don't worry anon, what you did was get closer to the style you like, the old style can stand on it's own and people happend to like it more than your new one, that's just their opinion. I am happy that you have found that style that you like. Keep going for cleaner work and keep doing what you love, bests of luck.

Now what the hell guys, you call an artstyle you don't like worse than another artstyle that you like? You can only do that with things that are not so heavily cartoonish, is like comparing fairy odd parents to bob sponge or some shit.

categorically wrong. you're reacting to the assertion of progress as a qualifier and playing contrarian, not actually thinking. anatomy, lighting, silhouettes, perspective, clothing and framing all improved a lot in the right. wake the fuck up

tbqh i really dont know lol
i mean, i have different ways to draw the background, but the most important things i always do is find the skyline and then do the perspective lines, after that i try to do an empty room, maybe with some big stuff like furniture, and progressively add small stuff, the thing is, i do all in one layer, so everything is rendered by the time i'm adding new stuff, i'm not really good at finding the correct composition for backgrounds, but this thing about progressively adding stuff, helps me to see if something looks good or not, and take it away easily
idk if this makes sense, but see pic related, it's a progress gif of a 2017'drawing of mine

This is my progress in 2 and a half years.

A year ago I decided to focus on my goal to becom a character designer!

The image from 2017 was from a manga character, I paint it in about 6 hours.

The one from this year is a original character, too simple maybe, but I had never designed a character ever.

i have been following your blog for a while and it is disappointing to see how poor of an attitude you have against criticism of your art, on an art critique board at that. while the second picture may be more skilled the first one may "look better" because of the contrast and overall aesthetic and looks of it. however i can see that you did improve, but sometimes a poor drawing can look more pleasing than a skilled one.

I'm really glad about my progress (dec2018-now). Focused mostly on getting back into drawing and will transition to digital later this year in order to start learning how to paint and do full shading.

I'd say a decent amount, but there are people who draw like 16 hours a day. So its hard to compare. I'm terrible with giving advice and I don't really have much of a new insight, but I'd say the thing that helped the most is trying to start illustrating full "finished" stuff, while/ after you do studies and practice stuff. You learn a lot about what you're lacking, and you just improve/ focus on it next time and slowly you get more ambitious. I think doing this also helps with trying to figure out what you want to say/ do with your art, which is something I'm struggling with a bit. Also kind of generic, but I think keeping an open mind is pretty important, which goes in tandem with staying out side of comfort zone. Like being open to different approaches, subject matter, media, artistic influences, etc. Just be curious about stuff.
