IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

After you lay down your colors, add another layer on top of it (leave it on normal blending mode) then start refining your colors. This is the only way I found that makes the colors look more appealing when I used to do that method.

I think anything like that is a bit to rigid for drawing, everybody is going to develop different skills at different rates based on the kind of material they consume and their personal ability etc.
I would just pick a subject like gesture or anatomy and work on that for your X hours a day and I think that trying to micromanage it to much might lead to averse effects.

yes, i know that, its pretty obvious
what im struggling with is with what to start and what to practice. im somewhat decent with perspective and i understand how it works, so do i just jump straight to anatomy and all the detail, complex muscles
for example i feel like i have basic understand how to write and put letters on paper, but its too early to jump to calligraphy. does that makes sense as a comperisment?
isnt there a step im missing in the middle?

Sorry, I thought you were asking about time, not what to practice.
You can literally draw whatever you want however you want, as long as you keep drawing and you're critical of your own work and you want to improve, you will get better. Everyone learns in a highly personalized way so there's not much point in giving a roadmap. Seriously, just draw.
If you feel totally lost, then try completing a work you really want to complete, something that you would draw if skill was not a barrier. When you get stuck on something, go study that thing until you understand it better.

Biggest thing I notice you doing wrong is you are ignoring all of the many visible curves. Look at the body and how it curves in and out in certain areas. It MUST curves in somewhere, then somewhere else, it MUST curve out, and all these curves come together to create a figure.

In his silhouette alone, his back curves out slightly above his waist then back in at his shoulders and butt. His arm curves starkly up into a point then back to his head. His shoulders curve at a gentle peak to meet into his neck which meets into his head etc. etc. etc.

Look for the curves, try to capture the curves, DON'T draw the underlying shapes.

They look fine to me, but you will probably never draw heads like this because skulls aren't sphere shaped so it's nothing to get hung up over. I'm posting work I did a while ago so you can decide whether or not to take my advice. In my opinion "gesture drawing" is kind of a silly non-excercise. Have you ever learned anything in 30 seconds? In a minute? Genuine studying takes longer, "gesture drawing" to me just looks like a way to stylize your work in a particular way (Watts Atelier, Proko, Hampton, all have a synthetic quality to their line-work which is the result of this procedure). The human figure is a difficult thing to capture properly, second only to faces and maybe hands (I've still yet to master any of these), I think you'd have a better time using Keys to Drawing to try to capture the silhouette of an object, then move in on the details as the book explains. Then try to improve your eye from there by doing Bargues and copying artists that you like (in my case Kim Jung Gi, in your case maybe it's like the likes of Proko, Hampton, Watts, which, if that's the case, you ought to copy their examples of gesture drawing stroke for stroke, making yours resemble theirs verbatim).

So to recap, try learning to draw things exactly as you see them, try to draw from artists whose styles you enjoy, and if you like artists who employ gesture drawing in their procedure that's when you start.

if you don't understand the point of gesture drawing, there's no point in doing it. if you can't muster the will to do the barest amount of research into why people do it, you're not going to learn anything. of course you don't learn from just going through the motions. that's retarded. if you don't know what you're doing and what you're paying attention to, either research it or give up on it. seems you chose giving up.

If you needed to research the reason for gesture drawing you don't understand it, the "reason" is clear from the technique alone, to instill and exaggerate movement in the pose, I just don't think it's a good technique for that and prefer to simply study people in motion (I use quicktime player to capture movements in YT videos and redraw them frame by frame and I like it a lot more). If you think gesture drawing is important, post your work, me and the original poster will see if we like your drawings and take your advice accordingly.

The very first thing you need to fix is picking a light direction. Currently I can't find I logic or reason to it, the shadows are all over the place, and the shape of the forms do not follow the way the shadows are cast on them. Even in the hypothetical example of having a tree above Azula that casts random shadows on her.

Luckily this is easy to fix if spend a bit of time studying and understanding how light works.
If you haven't done so watch Sycra's Foundations of light and shadow series that explains this topic in the simplest way I can think of.

As someone who mainly does digital but also did some trad in art class and there went from pencil to drawing straight with ink. I can fully attest to this. Moving to ink from pencil was incredibly scary because as we know ink is permanent. However my art teacher (who had a really rough time convincing me to switch to ink) convinced me that "single lines WILL disappear" and from experience I can say that this is correct. It is only our perception that is playing tricks on us.

I also admit this helped my digital art in many ways because I spend less time working on single line and instead more time on the picture itself. So I would say that advice is sound! You should only spend so much time with your lines if you are doing a piece where the lineart carries the vast majority of the picture's weight, which I can only imagine being some ultra crisp comic book style cover art with no shading or color whatsoever. However if that is the case and you are doing digital you might as well be using vectors.

Most of the advice I see about gesture practice is the standard "just draw the motion!" but... The whole difficulty of the process is that I'm not sure I understand how to find the motion. It all makes total sense when I watch a video of someone else doing it, but when it comes time to do it myself from a new picture, sometimes I don't even know where to start. So the basic advice unfortunately doesn't help much.

I think my results have changes since I started doing this, and I'm even starting suspect that SOMETIMES I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, but other times my results don't really resemble what I think it should look like. I suppose this is how it goes, but trial and error feels inefficient without specific feedback.

Look man at the core the sticky is just a a huge list of things to do and books/tutorials read. Telling people to go and read a ton of books on the subject and practice for weeks or months or years before they start posting is not helping. Also /ic/ is not your shitty personal club that has requirements for posting if you want that go join some closed art community or something. People need feedback and guidance to get better that is how every learning process works. That is why schools were invented in the first place.

Plus the very first section of the sticky literally says
>Ask others to critique your work.

And let me tell you something. What's the literal worst thing that could happen? They'd ask you to rip the drawing up? What are they gonna do? You're not gonna get beat up. Aaand of course don't get frustrated if the tracing isn't exact, as you're not meant to be a machine or anything. Remember, they're exercises, it's not some test you need to pass with an A++ score. Try it but don't fear failure, there's nothing wrong with it.

But this thread kinda works too, though there's not much friendship here since it tends to get in the way.

I'd still hope someone else answers your first question though. Drawabox lines and tracing are a good option, but you could also do gestures. Gestures are kinda about letting your hand go free and draw stickmen, you can look for videos on gesture drawing. That may give you a good start too.
