i personally like his art because it's recognizable and appealing for me. i think that his backgrounds are very pretty and his simple aesthetic is beautiful. you might think i have bad taste, probably you're right, but there's a reason why he has so many followers and fans in japan, not for "wow so progressive" reasons. again, you may not like it. but many japs do. that is all.

His color and composition is pretty high tier for just anine girl busts. You can crab stance and say its just bright background and same face, but show me others doing similar work. And the image you post is to show off the tshirt design for sale. Why would you want busy hands and full body shot? Its not a great image, but it does what he wanted it to do. Ilya gets too much shit here for no reason. Hes not pretending to be some great trad artist or bragging or even advertising his work or doing anything to push himself as the second coming. He draws aninu girls with focus on busts with a unique coloring style and captivating eyes that set it apart from the normal weeb artists. Not using the exact same shitty digital painting style everyone uses and posts here also helps make it standout.

There are problems with his work. Same girl over and over with himecut, etc. But he has skill with colors, negative space and composition in his niche. He reminds me of eisaku.

Irya's career is so fucking weird to me. He's a literal kurva weeaboo that drew generic chromatic aberration pinups for years, manged to build a community and make a ton of bucks from patreon, and now out of nowhere he becomes character designer for a film in Japan and Netflix.
I personally find his art really boring but I can't help but be amazed by how far he went with that shit. If he made it, we all can.

Also don't forget that this anime is not AOTY or something, it's a rather isolated story that won't suffer great losses if it's shit, it's not like they hired him to make the next Shingeki no Kyoujin or Ghibli char designs. That comes IF he does well in this one and is able to keep up with the degree of social hiking.
