I have all these ideas of what I want to put on paper but it turns out like this where I do a shitty reference and give up on it because I think it looks retarded

If you're working on canvas, I'd like to recommend Leonardo da Vinci's basic method, which is to begin with chalk outline, ink the figures or details with brush pen, then prime over it so that it is covered in a thin white layer.

Then begin painting in oils.
