It's very difficult to do. Some methods to make money with art...

-Teach others (mini classes or tutoring)
-Hustle your work on the street
-Get commissions through your Instagram
-sell your soul on some furry fetish website and promote your services
-get commissions through word of mouth

The easiest of the above is to teach. Most pianist and ballet dancers don't make jack shit performing themselves, they make a living nurturing everyone else's talentless special little snowflakes. Do the same.

It's taken me a while to figure it all out. The easiest way is to have the gatekeepers put you in a cushy school job, but that requires you have the pedigree and went to art school.

I however have not done that, so my only option has been to pave my own way through free market capitalism.

Realistically, art is all about entertainment and marketing. People do not buy luxury goods or original paintings from an anonymous person. They need a story and a character to justify spending the big bucks. Be interesting and ppl might buy your originals.
My approach is completely 180 to that. This is 2019, everybody is as cheap as shit, especially boomers. Nobody cares how long you took to finish a piece. They want something that looks nice, looks expensive, and cost them almost nothing. Which is why I encourage you to sell reproductions of your art at $5, not originals. Ppl just dgaf about a fancy pants originals, especially because you and I are not special. View your art more from a utilitarian viewpoint. Have a commercial appeal of local scenery or something and then sell it cheap in high foot traffic areas. Or hand out cheap originals and try /beg/ like a gypsy scam

It's totally doable, but you need basically a perfect résumé. Start drawing from young age on, live a happy and healthy life, and then just work your ass off.
