It's so freaking convoluted I don't know how to explain. I usually start off by doing 5-10 sketches of characters, I pick out some that I like and draw stuff around them. But I could never put out a neat process video, I always add and remove elements back and forth, recolor, start over and over until it looks okay. My current goal is to make this process a little less chaotic because it takes too much time.

Attempting to explore an anime aesthetic for some short animation ideas I've been thinking about for a while. For characters, I want to highlight naturalistic features. Still working out a balance of realism and stylization. It's been a back and forth thing as I'm used to getting carried away with rendering minute detail so it's a challenge exercising more restraint, but I'm really enjoying myself after a long period of not creating anything.

90's era Production IG and Madhouse are some primary inspirations.

I like these. If you're looking to push more towards anime I'd suggest abstracting out things like the nose bridge, under-eye folds, and lip details. As they are currently they're very nice illustrations but they don't really feel Eastern to me.

>> No.4016895

>>4016805
Thank you. I agree working on more absrtation is key, It's admitingly challenging readjusting my perception to see more abstraction in reality. Attempting to implement and refine has been enjoyable.

I don't nesciarally want them to look eastern as not imitate those styles directly. It would be too redundant imo, as I'm not eastern lol, know what I mean? Designs practical for animation is the goal. A balance of realism and abstraction; being mindful of naturalistic lighting, weight, and more naturalistic phyical features.

I'd argue that even if you can draw, you lack the ability to apply it when you paint.

And just for the small off-chance that you're being sincere: Everyone in this thread, including me has a ton of work left to do to patch up all of our weaknesses. You're no exception. However, I do recognize your work, and you haven't improved in any meaningful way. You're still hanging out in your comfort zone, you're still bad at shape design, your figures are still mushy and lack any kind of bold confidence, and you still think a fancy painting is going to make up for your inexperience in drawing.

If you have to try harder than everyone else to succeed, it's just because you're a little further behind the curve than your ego is willing to accept. Them's the breaks.

Wasn't entirely sure what you had in mind for the pants nor what their shape was, your highlights are all over the place. In general, keep it simple and be mindful of the form. Don't go from black to white, reserve those for the most occluded or specular areas. That said im a fucking shit teacher, so the image attached has basically everything you need to know, spend ~5-10hours on a study of that with the intent of understanding why areas are the value they are and where the light is coming from. Also notice the range the values are contained in for the most part.

Besides the obvious fingertips and hand inside the bottle... The main issue you had with creating a fisheye lens was not paying attention to camera placement/direction.

Everything in the foreground is 'camera pointed down and to the right,' but the background camera is pointed straight at the wall over and right of standing guy's shoulder. Because it's just off his shoulder, barkeep should not be able to reach up over his head to reach bottles that we can also see the top of.

If you actually want the camera at near ceiling height, the far wall-to-ceiling edge won't fisheye much, and everything below that will progressively fisheye more. Camera equidistant from floor to ceiling will bend the floor and ceiling lines outward symmetrically.

I'll assume the warping in the bottles is either a mistake or 'stylization,' but if the shelf we're looking down at is parallel to the back wall, it will bend away from the camera at precisely the same center line the back wall does.

Think: a globe. Place a cube between you and the globe. Plaster the back wall of the cube onto the globe such that everything inside splays out.

I'm gonna get shit for even responding, but I figured someone else could use the info too.

It’s not a fisheye perspective, it’s a receding curvature, and a very simple one at that. There’s three levels, the bar we are looking down at, the people straight across, and the back wall that we are looking up at. The perspective you're trying to draw clearly reflects the way a fish-eye lense camera works. Unless your setting is based on a planet the size of an office building, you can't see any curvature from the ground level.

There's actually nothing wrong with using pure black or pure white.

The important thing is to make sure you don't overuse them. You don't want to have a full stroke of black. Just little specks of pure black, and only in the darkest shadows.

Contrast is determined less by your range and more by the ratio of your three core values.

>what can I improve on for next time?
1. Pose. Sketch people from life more. 2. Color. Do you ever draw with colors, at all? Draw still life focusing on colors, make master studies. 3. Rendering. Improve your drawing first, it will improve your painting too, then improve your rendering technique, block in areas of light and shadow first, pay attention to edges and shapes. Study materials, your eyes look like they're made of stone.

Great stuff. Just a few issues I see with the shading and focal length.

Keep in mind the distance between the ear and the corner of the eye. It seems the distortion in the front of the face is similar to a 80mm lens while the right side of the jaw (image left) is more of a 120mm. Then you have the ear which seems to be more of a 40 - 50mm (Wide-Angle). Nothing too serious. Quick fix would be to just make the ear a bit bigger.

Best way to train your eye to see these relations is just grab a camera (phone also works) and find someone who's willing to be your guinea pig.

You can just look at focal length comparison images online too but playing around with it irl somehow wires it into your brain and it's easier to produce from memory afterwards.

In terms of shading you're pretty much spot on aside from the cast shadow on her neck and the way the shadow wraps around her face. Again those aren't very noticeable things.

I really like the hair and the subtle shading on the clothes

Here's a rough overprint of what I mean. It's a bit dirty but you get the overall idea.

I'm gonna use this as a concept for a goblin queen in my game. She's a mutated human, she was born with huge arms and hands, 6 fingers on her right hand, and other deformities. She was abandoned by her parents, but some goblins found her and raised her. She's slow and awkward in her movements, her speech is also slow and not very intelligible, but she actually posesses keen intellect, and some magical powers, as well as abnormal physical strength.

Addition: she lives with goblins and has become their queen, but she tries to act like she thinks human nobles act, and collects human things. The goblins brought her this armchair, and she decided that it would be her throne. And those clothes, taken from mine workers, are her royal attire.

Hey guys, pls tell me how to improve gesture

This is the second day of drawing gesture, I did about the same number yesterday, all of these were under 1 minute (anywhere from 30 sec- 50 sec)

The only resource I used for these was Proko's article and Hyper Angle poses for reference.

>> No.4022065

>>4022052
looks pretty good so far, but you really need to vary your line weight more. Use a larger brush if you have to, the forms need more definition in terms of separating large from small, interior vs exterior etc. All of your lines are very similar and anemic looking

>> No.4022080

>>4018685
It feels like the hips are a bit out of perspective, I think her navel is giving it away.

Also the girl's pose looks a bit stiff, it could use some more dynamic gesture imo. (If you traced an image directly, this might be the reason as images are very stiff)

You should probably look at one of Araki's drawings and just analyse where and how he hatches.

I also looked it up, he doesn't seem to cross hatch and you do, so you would probably want to change that.

I like the lion thing, but would recommend adjusting the perspective on it's mane as it shouldn't have the same volume on both sides if the head is tilted.

The weave of the sweater looks to be very loose(because the shoulder). Perhaps it should easily stretch, spanning across between the breasts instead of almost tight to her body form. I would expect the weave itself to get slightly wider where it stretches. Without the weave pattern widening, the garment appears to be cut that shape.

Btw, the sharper the folds in her sleeves, the more starched it looks.

Also I can see the deepest part of the fabric, even while it's turning away from the camera, making the edges flat. You could just show the outermost edge of the surface as it turns away.

Her hand positions look to me like she has fabric draped between her arms, awaiting inspection by a client.

Lookin' real good overall.

Resize your images, as the OP advises you to
Post in the beginner thread, /beg/, if you want beginner advice - since there's already a thread dedicated to beginners people generally don't bother replying to beginners in this thread.
Global rule #2.
I suggest not going digital as a complete beginner. A stylus on a tablet is harder to control than a pencil on paper, which will make your drawings turn out worse. It'll also hinder progress since you can't focus on stuff beyond drawing a curved line.

How do you not see all the anatomical flaws in this? It's unironically like some /beg/'s attempt at a figure from imagination. Do you not flip horizontally? Do you not know how the skeleton works? Show me where you think the iliac crest, femur and bottom of the rib cage belong. These are supposed to exist inside your figure, *anatomically correctly.*
I don't expect you to fall for the "start construction with a skeletor mannequin" meme, but the idea is that you still have an undrawn one in mind man.

>>4024380
You're using the tail to hide that fact that you have no clue how to connect the right thigh to her pelvis - naturally so, since you misplaced the entire leg. Same thing as above. And the left breast, like, involutes upon itself, I don't know how to describe it, it's like you rotated it towards the floor if that makes sense.
Lastly, raise your hand. Do the finger gun gesture. Do it. Look at your index finger and tell me whether your index finger has notches at its creases or just some dark lines without depth. Also, look at where your fingers end when doing the finger gun versus where her fingers end, fucking hell man, you've got a reference right on your hand, how did you miss this. (You don't have notches, so don't emphasize them like her finger is actually three mini sausages stitched together)

Firez you're stressing me the fuck out, it would take so little for you to improve, just literally draw a literal army of skeletons and you'd no longer need to plant wonky tits on guesswork ribcages

>> No.4024439

>>4024435
Upon deeper analysis of my own finger gun I have come to the conclusion that having the finger ends rest where hers rest wouldn't be particularly uncomfortable, so I'll add this on: In this pose then the fingers don't all line up that nicely at each joint, you'd have to noticeably unalign them. (Meaning the hand is still fucked in a way you should have noticed)

Like This is a fair comment but I feel like the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Most people would think this is beautiful and move on and will only even look at it for 30 sec and if they are looking longer then they won't be looking at where the leg joins the pelvis haha.

Even a small thing like this would help.

Actually that is the part anon got wrong. Kind of reminds me to that guy who redlined Firez studies. Human body can do some funny stuff but I guess /ic/ is too full of loomis drones to accept that
