Just draw, copy pictures and references if you need to go on autopilot, but you need lots of mileage starting out. Draw what you like and study what you like. It’s better to draw animu studies that to not draw because doing fundies is boring.

Thanks anons, and i wish i could answer that, one thing i've learned is that if you use photoshop adjustment layers to tweak colors enough, one day you'll stop needing them, but even those can't save atrocious colors. From seeing a billion of these threads over the years I really think people shouldn't be posting 1-3 month progress updates or anything over give or take 6 years.
1-3 months you're almost guaranteed just cherrypicking a lucky study or illustration. Anything over 6 years is like...okay who cares, anyone should be able to go from stick figures to industry standard art in that amount of time with decent studying.
I see people on twitter all the time posting improvement pictures with a full fucking decade in between. This doesn't speak to tracking improvement or looking for advice to me, its just trying to show off. Not the point of doing progress charts!

I doodled monsters and stuff as a kid, but didn't really start seriously trying until 2017. Did a 30 day challenge for March in 2018 and inktober in 2018. I feel like both of those helped a lot. Trying to push myself more in 2019, learning more about fundamentals, and I'm drawing a lot more in general. Usually it's just sketches but it makes me more comfortable working.

I'm a bit uneasy because I don't know that I've improved very much from last October to now. One thing I'll say though is that I can work faster and more consistently since I don't need to redo my construction a hundred times like I often did in 2018.

I tried picking mostly things I remember liking from each year. I'm hoping that I can see a more obvious improvement when I do inktober again.

I'm taking crit with a grain of salt on /ic/. Ic is full of people with different perspectives on art, and some of those people can have bizarre views or extreme perspectives on art.

I never said my art was amazing, I just said it wasn't as bad as you guys made it out to be. I obviously have a lot of room to grow as an artist (which I said by the way). But my art isn't bad. I am constantly trying to improve myself as an artist. I don't understand what I did wrong to make you react like this, lmfao. Especially since the two anons didn't explain what I should work. Someone said my hands looked bad earlier, so I have been analyzing how I can make them look better in the future despite being giving no basis on their statement. I agree with >>4031363 . You have to be confident in your abilities and improvement no matter what someone says. It has to come from your mind alone. If it can't come from your own mind you need to do better until it can.

Even low substance criticism is important because it shows a first impression and lack of genuine interest. Insults show a first impression. Even no critique or praise gives valuable info about how interesting your work is and how talented you are in the sea of everyone else.

Don't seek out praise and get buttmad because "worse" art gets praise that you don't. Find the value that you lack instead of thinking everyone else is wrong.

There is /literally/ nothing to project. I'm pointing out your ngmi attitude that makes you ngmi, ngmi. But you can ignore me, no skin off my balls.

>> No.4031458

>>4031440
Anon seemed like she was pretty confident first time around.
Low substance criticism might inform you on the basics of "do people like your art or not," but other than that it's pretty useless, it's like getting a math test back with a bad grade, but none of the incorrect problems are marked off. The point of criticism is to learn what you're doing wrong and how to fix it, and if it's not specific then the artist won't have much of a grounding to know how to improve.
Basically, you should tone down that crabbiness just a little bit anon

>> No.4031475

>>4031440
I really don't know what point you're trying to prove? I am 100% confident it my art. I take every crit I get. I said this. I didn't even say anyone was wrong. I was just saying that i'm not too bothered by the comments I got. Besides, how can I know what to improve if no one gives me a clear opinion? Everything I take from this site is with a grain of salt (once again, like I said).

I don't know why you think i'm upset that someone with lower skill than me gets more praise. Frankly, I do not care about the feedback I get from ic. Maybe once in a while, I'll post but not much. There is a trend on this board where people give baseless crits to artists out of jealousy. It's not worth the loss of brain cells when I can just go to someone more reliable and can prove to me that they truly understand fundies. So once again, I say for the 3rd time, I will take your crits with a grain of salt, like how everyone on this board should. I really don't get how me not sobbing over 2 anons saying my art sucks is me saying everyone is wrong. I don't even know what you're trying to accomplish

Not really, I think it's probably better to experiment with style as you're learning so you gain a better breadth on different aesthetics and techniques, but as you progress you may want to choose a few styles to really polish and get good at.

I like the face a lot, but the nose looks off. I think you defined the side too much for how flat it is. the hair looks like tiny braids which is hard to do.

biggest thing you need to do is to study color theory. colors bounce off of each other, everything is not just a gradient of the color it is, it will be influenced by its surroundings. once you start applying that you are going to make big strides. it'll also help you see little things wrong with your painting.

Your composition and color improved a lot in a short period of time, don't despair anon! I legitimately like the bottom one. You're pushing yourself to explore your imagination and to make scenes with intrigue to them, which is something a lot of artists in this thread struggle with, and is a good thing to tackle head-on. If you keep pushing yourself to draw more and polish your fundies I think you have a lot of potential.

I appreciate this man. I think one of my own biggest frustrations in art is seeing the trees for the forest. Like, how does the work I'm doing now eventually translate into the similar sorta stuff like Puppeteer Lee or Guwez or A-rang? That kind of Korean character design type art is what I'd really like to be able to do, but I've a hard time seeing that my shitty scribbles will eventually transform naturally into that style of art. I've got inspiration compilations of all my favourite artists on a cork board but I don't know how to work towards being like them.

>>4034834
I wish you would have lined her lower right eye with a fine line of red like the left because it would bring out the blush evenly. I know you paired the red liner with above the right eyelid having some red instead, but I think that the blush stands out more on the side with the liner and it looks uneven. Maybe I'm wrong tho and it might look better the way you did it.

I really really wish you didn't draw small lines in her periwinkle eyebrow. There aren't small and/or scratchy lines like that anywhere else in the painting so it stands out a lot and throws off the balance and crispness. I probably sound dramatic but it might ruin the piece.

I tried to show the difference in ms paint with my trackpad. I want to stare at the version without the lines much more despite it being a shitty ms paint coloring. I was going to suggest making the brow match the other, but I feel like the periwinkle brow draws the observer in to look for longer, and the longer you look, the more natural it feels with the yellow eye.

If you still think the brow needs darkness, I would suggest a gradient. Or maybe sparser dark lines that are as thick as the red ring around her iris or lines inside cross.Or using a darker periwinkle because the surrounding darkness makes normal periwinkle pop too much.

Other than that I love it
>I would literally buy a poster of it if I saw it irl.

If the eyebrow was fixed I would buy it online. Still probably would.

/beg/ here giving some /beg/ advice so beware, but here's my philosophy and what has made me feel contented so far

Have you tried copying from refrence? I feel that churning endless loomis heads and repeating some arbitrary excercises thinking you'll learn to draw figures that way is pretty pointless. I personally find it more enjoyable to look at refrences and draw/copy them or play with the ideas of a picture and change some things while following others to test what works and what doesn't. Maybe it won't make you a pro but you might be surprised how much better your figures look if you copy aspects from an existing work rather than bruteforcing a figure to canvas from imagination through sheer force of will and some rules of assembly you heard from some third party who may or may not be spewing complete bullshit or stuff that isn't helpful to you on your current skill level

Assuming you want to draw figures then look into anatomy for a brief second. Study the large distinct bones' shape, lay and joints. With some idea of the internal scaffolding you can attempt to overlay it to your work and troubleshoot warped areas

If perspective is your nemesis and you just can't figure things out any other way then you can look into a program that lets you pose figures and then study them by drawing them from various angles. With enough repetition you should eventually figure out what makes them tick

Focus smart. Eliminate one problem at a time. If faces give you trouble then look into the proportions of face and what general rules apply to every head. Maybe even give some thought to sculpting in 3d, it has helped me visualise before but that isnt for everyone

Also try paper. even ballpoint pen and old pocket calendar is fine at start. if you are grinding fundies with an unfamiliar instrument it will only add to your troubles. While I practise both tablet and paper, I do prefer paper's simpleness and reduction of brain overload when focusing solely on learning
