IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Those heads are decent but if Loomis isn't working for you try Vilpu or Hampton. The facial features are all wrong and you need to learn how to properly rotate them, think of drawing in a 3D way.

But your lineart and values are decent, keep studying but put some conscious effort in correcting your flaws.

Not bad. You could level up real fast if you learned how to do smoother rendering. It's not particularly hard, you just have to be slow and patient and build up darker values in layers rather than putting them down in one go. The scribbled patches for the hair look particularly amateurish. But overall good job.

I don't know if you're trolling or not, but, the vast majority of commercial artists were already very good from years of childhood practice before they started drawing gestures, assuming they've ever even drawn them at all. The idea that someone has to know how to draw gestures (i.e. some weird arbitrary system that's no better than any other weird arbitrary system) before they can successfully start drawing other things they want is absurd and has zero empirical support.

Your shapes don't make any sense. You're not thinking about what those planes are actually describing, you're just trying to fit as many triangles in as you can. Try drawing some wire frame like lines that wrap around the form so that you're thinking about what is actually there.

Depends on why you're doing it. If it's to study the image then I don't see why not. It's not like it'll make you worse. Another day, another page worth of attempts to grasp the intended purpose of doing this exercise. Pretty sure I spent more than the allowed time on some of these. I know you're goofing off, but an issue I see with most /beg/ artists (I'm /beg/ myself, too) is that they only swear by what the book tells them and only do gesture/loomis skeleton studies or grind boxes endlessly. That isn't how you're going to make it. I was like this for a while myself. I would only study photos or do figure studies because I thought I had too. Don't spend all day just studying. Make something fun, and when you encounter a flaw, go improve upon it. It's ok to make bad art sometimes as long you know WHY its bad and you're confident you can fix it in the future.

Your flowers are too "two dimensional" looking. Even though its not explicitly about flowers, I would recommend looking at "how to draw the head and hands" by andrew loomis. Even, "fun with a pencil" is a good starting tool if you really want to learn how to draw properly.
The fact that your flowers have incorrect anatomy and aren't in three dimensions sort of shows you are a beginner

I am trying to branch out from what I normally draw and I'm drawing a transgender possum person laying on a bed and uhh I realize I had no sense of scale for non-human stuff, and have been having a big problem drawing the torso to scale. I am tired of starting new drawings and want to actually start finishing them in order to actually get good. Please excuse the content but I do want to get better at this and would very much like to finish. With that said, my question is, how do I better visualize what I need to draw? My brain can't seem to put together basic shapes, so I'll literally start one area like the left foot and finish it, before starting somewhere else.

Your character isn't bad but what >>4016426 said is true about the perspective being way off.

As for shading, it is simply just a lot of busywork. If you want to make it good using hard cell shading you need to pick a lot of colors for midtones and arrange them over the form keeping the light direction in mind. On the positive side your picture has clearly identifiable light source because of the shadow that the character casts on the box, this is already a good thing.

I've been thinking about this angle lately, I'm not so sure actually. I think it is possible to generate a view like this, where you get the sense that the head is titled up but the arc of the chin hasn't fully inverted and exposed the neck yet, if the head is the right level above the viewer and it's tilted at the right angle. I think at some point in my attempts today something changed in the way I was doing it, but I still feel like I'm not on the right track.

The idea is that you'll eventually get to a point where you won't need to draw every single drafting/planning line and will need minimal construction but yes, you will draw the final product without the lines.
I try to use a wooden pencil and place my drafting lines as lightly as possible if I'm going to only do a pencil sketch so people don't see all the draft work underneath and focus on the final product. If you're going to ink the drawing, digitally or traditionally, it doesn't really matter. If you're finishing it digitally, go crazy with the pencil. If you're inking with a pen, you can leave as many construction lines as you want as long as you can still tell understand what it is that you're inking over.
Also, just try not to make lines that you won't be able to erase so don't carve impressions into the paper like you're doing a wood carving.

It entirely depends on the medium you're using and what kind of piece you're doing.
If your drawing is a blueprint for a digital painting and you're going to scan it in or take a photo of it, then it's a moot point. Similarly with trad paints, if you're painting on the same surface that you did your drawing on then you'll probably just end up covering it up, although this might not always be the case if, say, you're doing watercolors and plan on having some very transparent areas.
If your drawing is a blueprint for a final graphite/charcoal/ink drawing on paper then you have a few options. You can keep the lines as they are, or you can erase them, it's entirely up to you and what fits the situation, how much you think they'll blend into the final piece, etc. There are also a few other tools you can use, like a lightbox for tracing (draw the sketch as messy as you want and then start the final drawing by tracing the original very lightly), or a non-photo blue pencil. Some people used to use overhead projectors to project the sketch and trace over the projected image, which was also useful for scaling.

To clarify an earlier question. An anon provided this youtube video as an example of gesture exercises:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpejM-T9YG0

But I'm having a hard time identifying how this is actually applying the concepts the instructions gave for how to use gesture. Pic related is an example, I can't yet see where or how the video uses this at all. I can sort of see how asymmetry could be used in an abstract way by skewing the edges of a 3D object (it would probably be easier to see if I could see his model while he draws), but even that I don't really know how to apply in my own exercises.

So, I'm hesitant to try to mimic the technique of the video when I don't really know what he is doing, and I feel like I'm not producing the desired results when I follow my interpretation of the written directions.

Well normally I just start with the torso and scale everything to that. With what you're trying to do, I think you ultimately have to decide if you want to do humanlike proportions, which is easier imo, or animal like proportions, which will requires looking at animal skeletons and converting that to a biped

Also, it's suprising to see someone like me on this board, you go girl!

On the face-forward head at the bottom of this pic, one of the ears (their right) is longer then the other. When making ears, you want to make them both as similar as possible in length, design, and style. Fantasy ears even more so. Be more careful with this, use a ruler if you have to when doing front shots. From a design standpoint on the same head, their left ear is more appealing. Its slightly shorter so it doesnt crowd the design, but it has mass and shape -- the slight angle gives the appearance of a droop, which is more realistic due to gravity.

Their right ear goes straight out, which doesnt physically make sense and makes that little elf look more like it has a dick on the side of its head. I dont know if you drew their left side first and couldnt maintain the shape on their right, or if you did the right side first and then improved. Either way, the right ear needs work.

That side profile looks nice. Nothing to comment on, it looks like a more concentrated droop at the end, which is fine. But I would have to see a front shot of that same ear to make sure that you have the base form of it down properly.

That side view is actually improperly drawn, as the tragus (ear flap) should be covering the cavum of concha (ear dip) more. It looks like it doesnt have enough depth from the way the inside of the ear is shaped. The last two look like theyre structured fine enough - they're fantasy ears at an easy angle so not much to complain about.

Last notes, for some extra homework. The hair on your middle front-facing character is not well formed. Remember that in front view, heads are egg shaped more then anything, and you have the top of the head much too wide and unsymmetrical from the bottom half of the head oval. Hair sits ON the head, and it will hint at head shape. Therefore, having it sit and then waterfall off is bad design. I also dont see any hair below the ears or near the neck, which is likely to happen with that kind of choppy haircut.

You say figure drawings but that doesnt mean anything. Are they finished pieces that you used reference for, or were you just... drawing without reference and seeing what happened? Youre a beginner posting on a crit thread so you need to be more specific about what you were trying to accomplish in order to see if it was successful, and not just post something and ask how it looks. I cant give custom critique when I know nothing about where youre artistically at or what youre trying to do. Think about what youre drawing and share that. Thats my main critisism. Now, Im going to assume that these are gesture drawings because thats what they look like to me. You can push those poses more, exaggerate it a little. If these are referenced then you should Iook more closely at the references that youre using when it comes to muscles. If you did these from your imagination and just want to see if youre on the right track by sharing, then congrats youre gmi, now do studies.

Thank you for the feedback, maybe I can get more feedback on something else? I actually restarted on something new and drew this! Since I don't have a specific style I have a hard time keeping it consistent between drawings.

But Cloud Conjure is a level 1 spell and I love this baby.

The proportions are stylistically good, but those arms are too damn small.

Is this a baby furry with heart eyes, a metal tshirt, a sparkle diaper, wearing glasses? Firstly, why. Secondly, nice color choices. Thirdly, those fingers do not sit well.

It's a sabatic goat because I thought it was funny, the glasses are my own, heart eyes are cute, and diapers are cute for babies. It was made simply by starting one area and moving onto the next, and I like the grape jelly fingers but they can be redone.

However they were originally meant to be a plushie of sorts, and I wanted to redact that but keep the features, hence the stature, weird outfit, and overall cutesy but strange anatomical design.

Thanks, your totally right now that I'm looking at it, it must have slipped past me due to the bend arms but those wrists defintly don't come down to the hips.

Jokes aside I like this, it's cute! And even though you don't think it, you do have a style that's showing through, I can only describe it as "Black Ops 1 Battle Tags" but it's present, and it's nice, if I had to point out a spot to improve I'd say the area to the viewer's left where the arm overlaps the face looks a tad noisy. But all in all it's v good

Wow that is extremely accurate, and it is a little noisy but I am really happy you said that! Thank you, but consider my other drawing, those are both "my style" but both are radically different.

It might just be how I'm like, seeing the two images in question but both come off looking they they were kind of building blocked together out of basic shapes. It might be how you are using color that makes it read to me like that though, I'm not sure on that front. But that's what I mean by you showing a style, it makes your drawings stand out in a unique way.
