What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Finally done laying down the flat colors... it took over 24 hours and now I find out I did it wrong by doing them all in the same layer, instead of using a different layer and a transparency block to only select and fill what I want to. Not pretty.

If anyone has a critique on the color scheme or values it'd help me. I think now all that's left is to pick the airbrush and add highlights and shadows maybe replacing some of those ink blobs for actual colors.

looks like 6 fingers or a swollen pointer. not sure which way the light was intended, second lvl of boob + neck suggest its upwards and parallel with shoulders from her right. the right arm in shadow below the deltoid is a bit confusing. the raised forearm could be casting a shadow on her torso to help reinforce direction if it is really coming from that direction. id say just more decisive light source and cleaner edges should help in the future. cool art anon.

I was just thinking about Ikeno earlier. The way he draws muscles is crazy good. So I guess I'm writing this as much for my own understanding as for yours.

The short answer is "very strong fundamentals." Nobody can guess his exact routine/inspirations, but that much is apparent. Don't know your skill level but yeah, it won't happen overnight anyway, so it's best to just focus on the big goal of getting good rather than emulating Ikeno specifically. You can always study him specifically later.

In my opinion his work is founded on five "pillars": drawing, gesture, anatomy/form, light, clothes/drapery. These may overlap. For instance, his gesture informs the flow/billowing of his characters' clothes.

So, draw a lot. With pencil whenever you can. It's less fussy than a tablet and is easier to build line confidence with. Study from life and photos of course.

Study clothes and clothing folds. Try not to think of them as just lines/creases but as ridges and bunches, with form, that wrap around and drape off solid volumes.

Study anatomy rigorously, when the time is right for it. Mainly the arms, his arms are insane. This is something you'll come back to again and again, even Atelier trained figure-drawing guys like Proko have to constantly refresh their anatomy knowledge.

Last but maybe most important, understand light through and through. Reflected light, occlusion, everything you can learn on the subject. Try to break down what's causing the lighting and value changes across an image. Learn how soft and hard edges play into form changes, if you desire realism. You can learn about light from all kinds of unexpected places, not just from art teachers. It helps to really understand the science behind it, but here's a start https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBt8qdO03-k
Also, get comfortable with using reference. He definitely does. But he's in control of it, not the other way around (he's not a copycat).

>>4014380
Forgot to mention, set your value slider in your art/editing program to luminosity (HSL) instead of value (HSV). Some programs show both at once. It's luminosity, not value, that affects how bright a color actually appears.

I think you're missing the essence of those styles. Like you said, they're built on simplicity and smooth, clean shapes and shading. What you have here is very messing shading and lines. I think it would do you a lot of good to practice doing clean lineart, yours is looking rather scratchy. It can also be helpful to do cel shading, and then blend it rather than just laying down strokes of color haphazardly if your goal is clean simple shading.

Wip. I was originally just going to have this be the character on a simple background but now I'm feeling like drawing something more complex for it. How do the colors work? I'm trying to experiment with using more desaturated and cooler colors again.

>>4018797
>what should I improve in the concept?
I think you should try thinking bigger if you want to show off your improvement. Perhaps you could show us her full body, or place her in a scene instead of on a gradient background, or put her in perspective to make it more dynamic. Perhaps instead of the simple smile, you could give her a more unique expression, you could try to really show us her personality with her expression/pose instead of having a straight-forward pinup.

Because you don't need a book for that shit. You would have to be an actual special-needs person to not understand how a certain artist drew with higher contrast and sharper shadows. If you don't have the literal basic observation skills to replicate that kind of shit then you need to work on it otherwise you'll be forever stuck reading books that walks you through it for 100 pages longer than required because you lack the ability to use your eyes.

If its digi, then you have to erase. General tips
>go dark - fill in the black parts completely (like under the pants and shoe, between the shirt and jacket etc)
>go light - you dont need to complete the form like a contour drawing use the eraser to delete some of the light / thin fabric edges or in places where 2 fabrics come in contact or a light seam
>line confidence, long continuous lines are better than short ones even if you redraw a thin line again - erasing takes confidence too.
>use layers, for overlapping areas, you can layer to get long fluid lines and then delete behind it or overlay on top. Ex: ink the hand in front of the jacket, then go back and merge the layers.

But mostly

why not use photoshop blending modes, its a great way to change a painting overall. (fill whole thing with paint in new layer, use a color you think would look good on filter, cooler more blue, warmer more red, change blending modes see what works)
next time be sure to paint in different layers if possible.

So I normally draw sexy anime girls but randomly I started drawing these creepy kinda things. Mostly I started it as just a way to get better at lineweights and being more deliberate with my lines (freehanding this was a rule, no pencil allowed).

It's very very very loosely inspired by kermit the frog.

Let me know what you think, if you think it's worth continuing these exercises. I think it's turned out cool along with the one other I've been working on (a tree woman).

It's been forcing me to use references a little more (not for this pic) too which is something i usually avoid because I'm lazy and I can "just erase and redraw it later"

I'm kinda shy about it since this is very different from what I normally draw so please be gentle.

So the thing that's under-talked about amongst artists who start with values then color over is you still have to do a fuckload of painting over the top of it after you're done. It's good if you struggle with having good values when you start off with color but you gotta have a lot of time to work on a piece to bother with it.

I think the coloring looks good so far. Add a little extra depth to the color and give that bitch some nipples, she looks weird without them.

The values on the base of the tail are the strongest for the green parts as well as the bit just below the public area, bring a little bit of that to the other areas cause it looks very washed out, and smooth out the colors a bit. I think the soft coloring on the head is great and it just needs some crisper color on the eyes, the mouth line (where it would open) and the cheek.

The boots are kind of ass though, get you a ref. Even if you're gonna stylize it just look at some boots for a minute bro.

Don't give up on it I think you'll learn a lot if you see it through to the end.

gonna try to give a concise answer as to how i approached emulating his style for this one

the single biggest thing i think that separates araki's art from other manga artists is that while his anatomy and proportions are wildly unrealistic and inconsistent even within the same figure, it's deliberately done so to have a clearer, more dynamic gesture/silhouette, even if the figures look like they have broken spines or w/e upon closer inspection.

i've also noticed that araki uses value not to suggest areas of light and shadow, but rather to clarify the orientation of forms in 3d space (this is most noticeable in how araki shades faces and shoulders). to araki, accurately representing the figure in 3d space is more important that accurately depicting the light source.

the final thing is that his rendering has an almost watercolor look to it (idk if he uses markers or watercolor). coupled with his love of extreme darks (especially when it comes to clothes), it tends to result in a look thats weirdly high-contrast and graphic and yet painterly and 3d

I dunno, I think that method for learning is restrictive and frankly too slow. It's probably the reason so many of them are stuck and never improve.
The best way to get good at drawing is simply to start figure drawing and copying forms of statues/paintings etc., studying the 3D world.
Sure readings can help clarify certain things, but it cannot be followed like an instruction manual.

Books are supplemental, you need an experiencial foundation. It took hundreds of years to get books by Bridgeman. Artists would literally sneak into graveyards and dissect corpses to learn to draw the human figure and interior. Not that any of these retards appreciate that. You can reinvent the wheel, or you can just read a book by a guy whos been doing it his whole life and learn in like a week

>> No.4025654

>>4025641
I think it's best to try and learn from a variety of sources honestly. Figure drawing and studying statues can be very useful for learning how to actually draw a human that looks alive, but books can be very helpful for learning how the nuts and bolts of the mechanics underneath work. When you only study from life/photos without guidance it can be easy for many people to miss important details and structure because they just don't know that structure exists.
