Post your older work next to a more recent one -- preferably with similar subjects so they're easier to compare. Include timestamps for each picture!

Rate each other's improvement, give helpful advice. Tell us what you've been working on. Let's see some gains!!

----------------

I found a much older drawing for this thread! Although I didn't draw for about 5 of those years... (it was too painful for me after I got kicked out of art school). The new drawing addresses flaws pointed out to me in the last thread >>4003063 >>4003293 >>4003073

I'll probably start studying hands next, ayy (and the male figure, I only did gestures so far).

It makes me want to cry

I've gotten a better understanding of the head and where things go but I still feel like I'm stabbing in the dark.

Need to pay more attention to the size and placement of features. Might give up on grinding heads for a while and figure out how to actually draw a body. Any suggestions for that?

Also how the fuck do cheeks work jesus christ.

All in all I need to use more and varied references but at the same time I've been told to get really good at drawing a single head and that I'll then be able to draw other heads through simply modifying that original, perfected head. I just don't fucking know.

it's 1 month, anon. Be nicer to yourself. This takes time. If you start out running, you'll wear yourself thin. Learn, draw, learn again and draw again. Over time you'll get better and better

Becoming an artist isn't a race with a set endgoal. The goal constantly grows as you improve. You're running to a finish line that will never exist, so don't be so hard on yourself. I'd recommend starting with something less complex than a human head. We, as humans, tend to be very judgmental of other faces, and can pick out even minute flaws in placement.

give a shot at hands. Complex forms that force you to think in 3d space, but without the extra challenge of overcoming what is, more or less, the uncanny valley

If you drew OP: Seems to me you were just blindly following /ic/ advice. Those seem like drawn from two different persons. I don't like the soul/soulless meme, but the first one shows passion and a cute cartoony style that I don't see that often. (Reminds me of french comics.)
It's also clear that you just studied from fotos. Life drawing is crucial to understand the human form. Maybe try to incorparate the stuff you have learned into your old style. Now that you know a bit about structure, you can use it to give your old cartoon more form.

They are though. Standard /ic/ advice is designed to make you fail. Doing the same shitty "exercises" over and over again, holding yourself to no standard and making no attempt to analyze your mistakes, not allowing yourself to attempt to actually DRAW anything until you've "mastered the fundamentals" (which is never).
In order to make good art, you must first at least TRY to make good art, something /ic/ is averse to. Kids who start drawing early don't know there's a "right" and "wrong" way to do things, so they're not afraid to explore, which is why they improve.

2bh, I really dislike that old "style", and I'm not interested in drawing that type of stuff anymore! I don't see how the left drawing has "soul", it just looks stiff and poorly drawn to me. In any case, I'm not looking to develop a style at the moment, just trying master the fundies to a satisfactory level, basically so I'm able to draw solid things and people from any possible angle, then study composition and color.

Btw, I think I was trying to imitate the style of the Wakfu series at the time, which is French if I remember correctly, so nice catch there!

>How did you get kicked out of art school, btw?
I got kicked out for not attending the classes for long periods of time. I was really depressed at the time and I got into all kinds of trouble. It was an art high school (normal subjects + drawing, painting, sculpture, design, history of art, and even metalworks; it was pretty intense), kids from there usually went on to study at art academies

Not Op, but grinding boxes shouldn't be something you stick with for a long time. While some grinding can be good, as it can held solidify new concepts in your mind and help you absorb new info, it shouldn't be all you do. And you especially shouldn't grind something as basic as boxes endlessly.
Learning how to make a completed "good" piece is something that takes more than just grinding fundies, because you have to combine knowledge of composition, color, line, shape, shading, rendering, and etc. all into one piece. Completed pieces are where you practice synthesizing the knowledge you gained through your studies, and is a skill in and of itself. Like anon said, to make good art you have to TRY to make good art.

This. Also copy and learn from your favorite artists. Not on your finished personal pieces of course, but analyze what they do to make an appealing composition. If you want to learn how to draw a battle mech at a certain angle, study your favorite artists who draw that sort of thing.

I guarantee most of the artists you look up to gathered their styles from a library of sources.

>>4011124
Ideally, you should be doing all three.
You should grind out exercises and study from photos/reality to gain an idea of how the object works in reality, so you can get a strong sense of fundamentals.
You should study from artists you like so you can get an idea of how the object you want to draw can be exaggerated and abstracted.
And lastly, you should study by applying the knowledge you gained from your other studies to create your own works. This helps you solidify your understanding, and lets you develop your own style as well.
If you're a beginner, I'd recommend still doing head/body studies from your Loomis/Hampton/whatever. It never hurts to brush up on your fundies, especially when you're starting out. But concurrent to those academic studies, you should try using those techniques to try and draw the things you want to draw. Try using the anatomical techniques you learned from the books to draw your waifu/oc. Examine how your favorite artist used the same principles you learned in your books in their work, and try to copy how they did it. Approaching the knowledge from several different angles can help you improve faster and gain a stronger understanding.

Paper is measured in pounds per 500 sheets, or a "ream". So 135kg(300lbs) is what 500 sheets of this paper im using would weigh. It's a decent thickness so inks don't bleed through.

For comparison, standard printer paper is labeled as "20lb bond". Bond being the type of paper stock. Depending on where you look region-wise, printer paper may also be listed as "80gsm". Kind of the same thing. Kind of not. It can get pretty complicated.

There are entire college courses you can take on this subject alone, so I don't blame you for being confused. Luckily you won't ever have to worry about it unless you're ordering prints or books.

Maybe Peter Han's exercises can help. If not, then keep trying to get more confident lines anyway (practice with a pen or something so you can't erase or ctrl + z it; you'll fuck up a lot but it's good exercise) and it should eventually click for you. Won't happen overnight, but you got to meet that goal halfway.

/ic/ should sticky a link to the wikipedia page on survivorship bias, maybe then there wouldn't so many naive idealists who fell for shitposters lies. /ic/ also has a chronic tendencies to misinterpret how talent works, they seem to think that because it takes thousands of hours of work to get good at something, then it must ONLY take thousands of hours, and that anybody could be a great artist if they just put the time in. The truth is there are plenty of people who would still be shit after ten thousand hours spent drawing. Almost none of them will go that far though, because despite being bad at drawing, they aren't braindead, if you put 500 hours into practicing something and aren't noticeably better than you were after 100 hours, than you probably would and should give up, because zero improvement multiplied across 10,000 hours of practice is still zero improvement.

The chair is so straight on the camera that you can only see the 2 chair legs. And her leg is Straight on the camera while her right leg crossed over but instead of being on an angle it's flat, giving off an natural pose.

The right panel is also hard to read. It's someone laughing but what's the dark ink on the left side of the face? Is it supposed to be something because I can't quite make it out.

I really have no idea what that means exactly (what's wrong with learning fundamentals, lmao), and it doesn't help me with what I'm trying to do. I found this board about a week ago, and I'm already starting to think it was a mistake, lol, people just want to argue about their favorite methods of learning instead of actually learning

I'll stick with Loomis until I master the things to my own satisfaction, that's my plan. I know I won't be stuck, because I'm learning new things every week, not staying in my comfort zone, and it's already working, so don't worry about that senpai. I don't care about producing polished turds at this stage just so /ic/ can see a "soul" in them, lmao. What the fuug does that even mean, and why would you require that from someone who's just trying to figure out the anatomy :DDDD

Was it the comparison that triggered people? (Going from weeb shit to something more realistic, and marking that as improvement, lol, I should've anticipated the reaction)

(I'm not him.) Figure drawing only helps you get a sense of what the overall body looks like. You don't have to do 3dpd figure drawing if your goal is to draw anime.

It's like parroting you have to draw flower pots from life to learn how to draw. The advice in itself isn't bad per se, but people recommending to do so don't even understand themselves just "why" it's "a good thing".
You're exactly the same right now. You did figure drawing yourself for a while and noticed progress, so you associated "figure drawing" with the "solution to improve and get out of /beg/". Basic projection which most of /ic/ does, and this is why actual good advice is hard to get from artists who aren't introspective enough.

>> No.4013416

>>4013396
Not the person you're replying to, but figure drawing really can do you a lot of good, even if your goal is to draw stylized anime works. If you're at the stage where most of what you do are headshots/busts, it helps you expel your fears of drawing the whole body. Plus when done in tandem with a book on constructio like Hampton you can see really fast gains on understanding the form and the anatomy of the human body. You could theoretically learn these things without IRL reference, but studying from photos and life can really accelerate things. Figure drawing is simply the fastest way to learn how to draw the body, which is what >>4013352 needs the most i m h o.

>> No.4013466

>>4013396
Still better off figure drawing to improve your understanding of the human body and implement it to draw "anime".

And like >>4013352 said "doing the same kind of drawings with no focus in mind on what im trying to accomplish"
It opens up a whole library on how to pose/present your characters and what body language you want them to portray (without having to keep looking at other anime artists for reference). Figure drawing alone helps with the majority of the issues when it comes to drawing anime characters.

Since you seem open to critique I painted over some things that looked off to me. If you'd like me to explain the changes that I made more in-depth I can, but generally: the figure is too curved in perspective (feels unbalanced), the anatomy of the nose and jaw aren't quite right especially if you're going for an anime type aesthetic, the insertion of the bicep muscle is too low, and the position of his right arm is unclear as drawn.

During 2014 to 2016 I didn't draw anything at all. I drew the pic from 2014 to try my first pen tablet. I was a hobby 3D modeller and I used PS to make texture. But the drawing looked horrible and I quit it soon. In 2016, I was so bored that I started drawing but analog doodling only. This time I continued drawing for a year till I'was sure I could call myself a beginner level. Since 2017 I used digital tools and started visiting /ic. I glanced Loomis etc but mainly copied photo references. These guitar pedals are my own modelling. I once post on /ic the first pic as my work from 2017 but I was wrong. you need to stop letting the whites under the pupil show, they're too large, and your noses are too long. a good note of thumb is the circle method (pic related, pretend my drawing isn't so shitty, I'm using my spare tablet, the cheapest tablet I could get)
the eyes will be one eye apart, the nose will be one eye down from the middle eye circle, the mouth will be half a circle down from that and so on, better understood by looking at the pic

Tell me about it. I'm happy that I think I'm getting better but dissapointed that I'm still way off.

>I like the way you construct for a beginner
I'm honestly not sure if how I"m going about it is a dead end or not. Loomi's circle method didn't exactly click for me because I would spend 10 minutes trying to turn my lopsided oval into a perfect sphere. I picked up a 'can' method from hampton I think and sort of combined them I think. Still working it out.

>letting the whites under the pupil show, they're too large
Yeah it's a problem I have. I'm always surprised by my refs at how small the eyes and the whites are and just how much space the iris takes up.

>and your noses are too long
Yeah for whatever reason I thought the center of the bulb was meant to be placed on the dividing line.

> I've only ever seen you draw faces, have you tried drawing something else?
Not since I started trying to learn seriously. I've been trying to push myself to try gesture but I've sort of carved myself into a comfortable spot with grinding out heads.

Thanks for your feedback and advice my man.

Your stuff is cute but I think you need to push yourself more, friend. Draw backgrounds, draw dynamic poses, draw multiple characters interacting. I feel the biggest thing constraining you is the fact you only seem to draw busts of anime girls. Show us an anime girl in an environment, or an anime girl hanging out with her friends. I feel if you try to shoot higher with your work and challenge yourself more you'll improve a lot faster.

While seeing this thread, I thought I would try to find my old drawings to compare to how I am now. I realized 4-5 years ago I was very bad. (I'm still very bad, but I noticed a slight difference still) and my folders on my Passport external hard drive I have tons of images unorganized. So I'm trying to delete some trash drawings that I made and the rest I think I'll try to redraw them digitally later, but what I've been doing is starting to re-organized my folders and files because it's a huge mess.. So I have a question to you all, how do you organize a fan art image of let's say 'Black Cat' spiderman but drawn by a Japanese artist? (Pic related for my example)

i honestly don’t mind that much. i know i only started seriously practicing around 2014 when i was 15, lost p much all of 2016-2017 to depression, and only really got back into art late last year. obviously i could’ve improved much more but i just didn’t have the time or energy. i’m more serious about it now though, been starting to sell my art (actual finished ones) for pretty good prices and am going to a great art school in fall. things aren’t looking so bad. (not to mention some people only start at my age now or simply learn slowly... when we’re all 50 the few years won’t make a difference anyway)

I really recommend you go back and study things from life and/or photographs for a while. I can see a lot of improvement between 2017 and 2018 but I feel like you've fallen in love with your "style" which has become a huge crutch for you and it's probably preventing you from leveling up.

The way you use crosshatching with pillow shading re-he-heally isn't working. If you want to keep having line art with soft shading I recommend looking up artist, Djamila Knopf (pic related). She really knows how to make this style work. She also came from a stylized/anime background but she broadened her skillset and it really shows. You should also look at some of Six More Vodka's work on their project "Orken". It also has some pretty appealing, sketchy line work with some interesting shading techniques (even though the subject matter isn't close to what you're doing.

Anyways, try looking at other rendering techniques as well. You might find something you enjoy even more than what you're doing now!

>>4022058

You got the right attitude, my man. I think anybody could get pretty good in ~5 years if they study with proper intent. I feel like a lot of people here fall into the trap of "This is muh style" when they shouldn't even be focusing on style yet and end up wasting years of their time.

definitely someone could be 15, consciously decide they will study properly from now on and be at a pro level by 20. but for many people who just grew up drawing cartoons or something it takes a while to realize you even have to study your fundamentals, and getting a good study schedule takes time. in the end art isnt a race and you dont need to be a certain skill level at a certain age.

In my defense, there wasn't much educational content floating around back then. YouTube wasn't even a thing. I'm so fucking old...

I've only been taking this shit semi-seriously for ~4 years now (also doing 3D and sculpting on the side and shitty jobs) and I feel like I'm just now starting to figure out how to study things efficiently.

I think that being "gifted" in art mostly means that you have the patience to sit down and do the work and also have the disposition to look at your work for what it is instead of what you want it to be. 2 years of focused work can be worth more than 7 years of doing the same shit and expecting different results.

I'm still fucking shit for how long I've been studying but at least I got some shitty freelance work to support my bald, graying, fat existence. Meh.

art school is going to ruin you.
First year: Cull the weak (force /beg/ out by making them do shit they dont like, the rest who survives get to stay).
After that it's just a lot of exploring and diluted methods to draw (depends on your major). I learn a lot as I'm in one, dont buy shit they tell you to buy. Buy it only when they tell you "next class we gonna use this and that etc.) Most time you buy shit materials and they dont even use it in the class. Fucking retarded teachers.

>> No.4022391

i dont think so. the hardest process was getting through the portfolio reviews and entrance exam (begs wouldn’t have passed those in the first place). i know people who study there, and it’s very hard to get anything worse than a C in any course. it’s also not a traditional fine arts degree, but a modular design/arts course that basically lets you freely choose from a variety of courses from illustration to pottery. i’ve been to the school many times and have taken some courses there. it’s a very free and creative environment. i’m not very worried.

oh have I got a story to tell you.
This kid I used to roommate with for the dorm never fucking draws he's a full time neet who plays LoL for the whole semester before dropping out.
(Despite me constantly have to help him get up for class everyday, until I just say fuck it and gave up hope for him).
Whats anger me is that he showed me his portfolio and it was absolute hot fucking garbage, however he got in.
Next summer: Two of my friends whom I trust would make it into the school, was denied, I checked their portfolio and they are clearly better than the neet.

I didn't think about it until I connect the dots: I'm living in a blue state. You see my school was full of these trannies who cant draw for their life (I would say some /beg/ here are better than them in term of skill). The NEET was Korean and my two friends were white male. I don't want to get some conspiracy going but thats the only reason I can see why they accept some loser who thinks art is easy rather than two determined artists (They did say they have toughen up the acceptance rate durinmg the school year however, not sure what though).

>it’s very hard to get anything worse than a C in any course
Yes I agree with this. As long as you do the work, you will pass, it's very simple. One can probably bullshit their way through 4 entire years if they wanted to.
I have seen that happened, it made my blood boils.

I'm not the person you're commenting to but I can tell you how things work here in Finland:

Higher education is free and you even get some study allowance and a student loan from the government, if you want to take it, so you only need a part-time job or a little cash from mommy and daddy and you can go to school and live relatively comfortably.

The shitty part IMHO is that we don't really have any proper fucking art schools up here. They're all focused on this artsy-fartsy bullshit that'll never get you jobs or clients who might buy your art. "Draw your soul"- type of bullshit and they actually scoff at anything that isn't an installation of your inner suffering done from beer bottles or your period blood. I have many friends who graduated from the most well-known art school in Finland and neither of them is a working artist atm. Of course, there are many exceptions and anecdotal evidence is meh but this is the vibe I've been getting. Your best bet here is to get into an art school and just abuse the free materials and focus on getting better on your own.

Oh and there are no schools focused on entertainment design which fucking sucks!

Thanks for the info, anon

I noticed that. I know an artist who lives in France, he said that school is free there but they're just kinda watered down to the thing you said. There are some school here like Yale (big meme) that's probably doing the same thing over here. Apparently highschool there is college here.
I might move to EU later in life for some free education (If I have some build up mones).

We have to buy everything ourselves here in NA so it sucks. But there's more commercial and entertainment classes here (film, acting, commercial, VFX, animation etc.) if you want to come over and burn some money.

Over here you will see bullshit teachers 75% of the time. I only have 4 or 5 good classes (out of like 20) where I have good experience learning with. The rest are just some bullshit learning new "methods" or required classes like history and math shit (I have to take a social study class in the future, kek)

They teach you alot about tech/ art programs if you go to the right major though.

Good luck in Finland, anon

Here's as close to a finished full body that I've done digitally this year.
>>4022333
That's fair, I dont think I've even done a study for about 2 years, I've just been riding on the compliments I get from my friends. I know its not the best mentality but I dont think I could push myself to doing still life studies, I mostly do art for fun although it's beginning to look like my only career option lies in art.

with art like this, it is not a career option. sorry.

Uh. I mean I think a lot of people are capable of getting to pro level with hard work. But looking at your skill level now, I don't know why you would think "art is my only option".

i dont know how its crabbing. i wasnt mean to them but i was telling them the truth. if they cant accept it, its on them.

"i dont think i could push myself to do still life studies" is an absolutely decisive way to convince me you could never work an art job

>> No.4022777

so is there really no way to make it in 5 years ? seems everyone is barely improving

>>4022757 is being a crab, but if you want to seriously peruse art I think you need to start from square one and start taking things seriously. It can be very disheartening when you've done art for a long time and realize you don't know the basics, but if you keep your chin up and put in the work I'm sure you'll be able to greatly improve your skills and become a lot more confident and capable. I'd recommend cracking open Hampton's figure drawing book and starting to do some figure studies to better understand the human body and how form works. You should also start studying backgrounds and perspective too, as I noticed that was absent from all the art you posted. You should try being more ambitious, all the drawings you posted for improvement were very simple. The fastest way to get better is to push yourself out of your comfort zone and tackle the things you're bad at head-on, so you know exactly what to study and practice for next time.

I think you're just giving awful advice, m8. We all have to come from somewhere, and we all have the potential to rise up and get better. My art was shit too when I first got on /ic/ and it frustrated me so much when all I got was people telling me it sucked without giving me any real advice or direction, but once some kind anon did tell me what to study and how to study I made huge gains.
I just want this board to be a better place for all artists, and telling other people they're hopeless doesn't help.

I'm not him but the guy candidly admitted that he wouldn't be able to do figure studies on a regular basis and only draws for "fun" and compliments, if he REALLY wanted to get better he could have already started studying seriously, if there's one thing this board doesn't lack it's resources

Technically very nicely rendered. I would go through and scrutinize proportions such as bone width. Also, look at your joints compared to some references. Remember that a structure gives a subject structure. Eventually you're going to pull skin over that skull. Look at general facial proportions and compare your drawing to those.

Thanks Anon! Yeah, I know I know a lot of the proportions are fucked, some things are crooked, etc. I still struggle a lot with just getting my drawings to just match the reference in terms of shape/proportion, sometimes I'll get to the end of doing the initial sketch and I'll just see that everything is totally off. So I'm hoping I can do some grinding where I just focus on that problem and maybe clear it up a bit.

I would put her with all the other ecchi sexy girls if you want to seperate that further by anime style you can do that too that way you'd know it's lewd so it's in the lewd folder but it's not porn so it's not in the porn folder and it's too sexy to be cute so it's not in the cute folder
