What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

If you want to improve I think the biggest things you could do are
>Study the forms more, I think a lot of your work has a "flat" look to it that can sometimes be interesting, but I think it's ultimately holding you back
>Push yourself harder with coloring. Again, you often go for a flat look, but I think it would benefit you to leave your comfort zone and experiment with shading and rendering
>Study anatomy in-depth. You have some issues with the whole body, but especially your hands and feet. Even if you're trying to draw monster-like hands and feet, it's good to know the real-world basis for those body parts so you can make a more convincing stylization
Basically, if you leave your comfort zone and get on the grind, I think you can make some major gains. I like your work anon, so I hope you can make even better stuff in the future.

>I like to think I experiment a lot.

You're literally doing the same shit no matter what you draw.

There is no difference between drawing a pile of shit on different canvases as opposed to drawing them all on the same canvas, at the end of the day you drew the same amount of bad shit. There is no difference to drawing a normal ass guy and a normal ass guy with a mustache or a pair of wings, if your underlying technique is dogshit then the result will be the same no matter what.

Unless you address what is making your art dogshit then you will continue to draw complete shit and then wonder why you never improve or why you're hitting a wall. The subject of the art isn't the problem, so stop thinking that, stop thinking that drawing something different is the fucking solution to making your art inherently better.

You have to value match by eye, there's no way around it. The value number listed on a digital palette doesn't actually reflect the true darkness/lightness of a color because each hue as an inherent value associated with it (purples are inherently darker than yellows, for example). I'd color pick all of the values you have laid out and make a reference chart with them so you can match up hues from your palette it.

I'm not sure if this is even what you're trying to do, but a month back I wanted to have a color wheel where every part of the wheel was the same color luminance so I ended up making exactly that in pic related.

I use CSP but it can also work with Photoshop as well. Dunno about other programs. Also instead of having to set this up every single time I threw everything into an action so the art program just sets it up for me at the click of a button.

I don't use it all the time, but it's a time-saver when it's needed. I don't have to guess colors if I was looking for one with the same value, I just pick the value I want, then set the value to the color wheel and pick whatever color I want.

Also, I have a .tga file containing a perfect color wheel at 5000x5000 size (the one I use) but I don't know what people use to share files and if 4chan will even accept those links, so if anyone wants to help me with a website to share the file it would be most appreciated.

>>4007847 here, a couple things to note about the layer setups:

-you only need fill layers, one that's white, one that's black, and another that's gray
-the 50% gray fill layer should be set to "saturation" and its opacity should be put to 0, you can delete this layer if you want but it's useful for reducing the gamut of the color wheel overall and makes it easier to select colors that are closer to 0% saturation.
-for Photoshop, the color wheel should be a Smart Object, just like how in CSP the Color Wheel layer is a File Object. If you're unaware, both File Objects and Smart Objects are the same thing and behave the same exact way. It's important that your color wheel is an object and not a raster so that you can resize it non-destructively (for when you're doing close-up work or you're working while zoomed out)

and here's a literal overview of the layer setup in text form if you don't get it from the picture:

-Folder
|-- 'HSLuv' Folder (Blend Mode: Luminance/Brightness)
|--|-- White Fill Layer
|--|-- Black Fill Layer
|-- 50% Gray Fill Layer (Blend Mode: Saturation, Opacity: 0)
|-- ColorWheel.tga (as a Smart Object/File Object)

Photoshop: 'HSLuv' Folder should be Linked to the ColorWheel layer, with a mask of the ColorWheel layer on the 'HSLuv' Folder

CSP: Just clip the Saturation and the Brightness Layer to the ColorWheel layer.

Naturally, if you want to desaturate the color wheel, just increase the opacity of this layer.
-The Black fill layer should always stay at 100% opacity, you get your values from the white fill layer's opacity working off the black fill layer and all this is read through the folder it's nested inside while the folder's blend mode is set to Luminance/Brightness

honestly at this stage I think it's best just to accept the composition as it is and just learn from it for future projects.

Also, take note of the purpose behind the way the shot is composed: the main subject is the only character in-frame while he's sat directly in front of an open window showcasing nothing but a cloudy sky. Your composition is tight and crowded, and you don't seem to be giving a message through your composition. Rei could be shot such that she's being caged by the window frames, or make the scene more crowded to show how trapped she is or some shit.

In the reference image you provided, the subject is relaxed and siting in front of a vast sky, giving the impression that his mind is freely wandering while everyone else is of little importance (due to how out-of-frame they are, the scene could've done without them but chose to include out-of-frame characters anyways).

This shit is a huge topic of importance for stuff like photography, so if you want to develop an eye for shot composition I would suggest taking your endeavors to photography-based discussion to see how other people sell a "story" through a shot.

Clothing can negate the body shapes and give that "rectangle" shape that you're talking about (the extreme example being the hijab). Not all women have a defined silouhette and it can be interesting to make it look between a man's and a woman's body shape.

Just based on this picture, you could stand to learn some dynamic posing. The way the knight is portrayed here stabbing the demons looks more akin to a pose in a play or a greek vase depiction of an epic's scene.

Try having them interact a little more, like the knight stabbing into them from a minor elevation above the demons. Have the knight's foot pinning down the purple demon's hand with the knife as the knight stands above them and the blue demon grabbing the knight's sword as if she's trying to (futilely) stop its plunge into her.
