You might want to practice individual body part, construct anon. I like the general drawing as a whole, but the hand could use improvement as it looks to be pretty important. You can even look for hand drawings to see how other people do it. But overall you did a good job with the lightning and her face looks really well defined. Though I'm sure from that angle you could start seeing her right ear. Ears are generally at the same level of the nose. It would be covered by hair, but you'd see the lower half/

I'm eating a few hours' worth of coloring tutorials with Color with Kurt's channel. I'm gonna finish my piece today, dammit. To think professional comic artists can do many pages in a single week, the madness.... though that's mostly mangakas, I'm seeing comics have people for the linart, a flatter and then a colorist that only receives the lineart with flat colors and then renders.

So maybe I'm going crazy over nothing, the real world isn't that hard.
Though to do a webcomic you would be indeed all alone.

Anyway I'm back to work now, 5 days on a piece already.

I don't know how to color traditionally anon, but I know you needed to have very well defined values first. It still looks charming though. I'd leave it like that and move on to a new piece, it looks pretty and trying to add shadows and lightning on the fly might ruin it.

Again I don't know how to handle the brushes so I can't help with ink blobs an all that. But look for tutorials on youtube, don't be afraid to sit there watching for 10, 20 or even 40 minutes.
But handling the tools is all about practice and time... actually coloring, anon, is a BIG subject.
I say it because just today I've been watching digital coloring tutorials for 2 hours already and I still have more to go. There's learning about lights and shadows and which colors to pick and all that jazz.
If you look for Kyo Kusanagi fanart you'll see that the fire gets reflected all over his clothes for example.
I tried doing a paintover in Paint, it's by no means accurate but it'd be something like that... really you should leave it like that for now.

Not recommended because the temptation to correct is just too big. On pen and paper you just practice, see how ugly it is and move on to the next one in a matter of seconds or minutes and eventually you get it right.
This is from when I started. Those stickman poses were done in 30 seconds trying to capture the flow in quick motions that might just scratch the tablet if you're a beginner, and I think it's more accurate on paper. And if I were doing it on digital, I'd have been too tempted to spend minutes trying to correct the faces instead of just moving to the next one.

For the record don't copy my practice, it was before I understood what the hell Loomis and gesture were

I'm a beg but this anon might be right that it has slight mistakes. I tried spotting lines from the geometrical shapes like the horms, where the arm is resting, the legs, cleavage and other lines to see where are they pointing but the hair makes no sense. The lines on the hair in the ground are pointing in a circular way but the arm is resting in a horizontal surface so I can't make sense out of it.

Though generally you'd find a vanishing point like I did I think. Think of the scene in 3D and identify where the lines point. ALSO I tried to imagine how would the image look if the character stood up instead of sitting down. As if this was a movie filmed by a camera. If 02 stood up, you'd only see her legs, meaning the vanishing point is pretty down but I can't perfectly spot it.

Open your MIND'S EYE.. or something like that. Think of it as analyzing the image and extracting the motion of it... you ever seen an anime or manga? They draw speedlines to indicate the movement of a character punching or running or kicking. Every drawing has a "flow", that's the gesture.
I'm not that good at gesture but this little meme should give you the right idea. Also, gesture can be more or less complex. The actual pros like Hampton recommend gesture to be some flowy stickmen using as few lines as possible, but if you look for gesture drawings on google you'll find full humans being drawn. Don't do that for a while.
I repeat, just see a picture and identify the motion, also GESTURE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PRECISE, you're supposed to let your hand loose as if you were a painter, painting lik crazy. Generally look for the spine-line, identify the gesture of the person standing and then whatever else they're doing and put your pen into motion.

How do I draw in pen or without undoing constantly? "Working with my mistakes" is something I find extremely hard to grasp because the mistakes I make always seem massive as fuck.

>> No.4009228

>>4009213
Depends on what you're trying to draw. Exercises aren't supposed to be corrected. If we're talking about a real drawing you want to finish then start over or try something simpler. Some things are just beyond your ability to draw at the moment and that's OK, If you asked me to draw a kangaroo on pen right now I'd probably fuck up because I don't know how to do it and it's not worth trying in pen. Or use a reference for your subject. Or maybe sketch with pencil if you're really serious about this.

But if you're at the point you make massive mistakes and can't finish a pen drawing maybe you should go back to practice. Tons of exercises first about your subject, like 5 or so tries per page then try to draw it seriously.

not a shitpost reply, it's genuine advice. you should spend as much time (if not more) thinking about your strokes as you do actually committing them

>> No.4009256

>>4009191
>having troubles
anon wake up use the brain, is just random strokes to give some volume, they could be in any direction. What you have to think is in stop thinking bidimensional, and learn basic volumes. You look like you're just trying to paint something for first time without seeing real life. Just put some strokes make a mess, i doesn't matter, you can undo and redo infinite times.
If you can't just go to paint squares, circles and triangles again, do them alone, do them next combine, put a lot and make forms, then is gonna be really easy make volume, and you just gonna have to think in the color (learn colr theory too, or just look real life, by "look" i mean actual thinking in what you are looking, why the colors look that way, how the light is in different parts of the hair, etc, write it if you are too slow)

>>>4008894
Hollup what's wrong with it?
Not for now but for the future, if you are talking of color you have to take the picture with correct lighting, i guess that the paper is white don´t? Just pull the brightness up in photoshop or any image program.

>i know you don't have to be 100% precise but i'm trying to understand perspective better and i think finding the vanishing points for random images will help me
no dont do that men, just look actual drawing in perspective, the angles are just valid when people use them, and that is just in some cases, like for example in compositions, when the character is insert in some place or with other people (not always), if you dont know you can fall and try to replicate things that are not worth and probably you are gonna waste a lot of time overthinking a drawing that the original artist probably just build from basic figures without even thinking in persepctive like that one >>4009058

is really beg. An advice, look the basic books from the stick, and if you are trying to copy some image, instead of try to replicate, focus on "measuring" every part of the things that interest you, the pose, the arms with respect to the body, the face, etc. It's the way you start with natural drawing, the point of that is that you learn the proportional relationships between the different parts of the body, you do not need to know how to build volume for that, so it's a simple exercise. When people draw live, they are told to use a pencil or finger to draw distances, but it is enough to see and count mentally as if everything were divided in pieces, a little hard at the beggining for someones, but with time easy.

Dude, your wrapping lines don't make any sense. It's like you put them there to make it "look" 3d, not to feel out the form for yourself. In a lot of cases they take a lot of wrong turns.
Please, just grind some cylinders and get your wrapping lines right.

My drawing skills and colouring/inking skills are really disproportionate because by the time I finish drawing I'm too tired to colour. Recently I have been trying to improve this. This.
It's hard to do when you have the reference not on the same plain. Meaning it you have it on the monitor have you set up where you can effortless glance to the side of you drawing to look at the reference. Because it's a lot more effort to pick your head up to look up. And when your references isn't in view your mind wants to fill in the blanks and it thinks it knows what to draw. It helps to print out your references and keep them beside your drawing.
This is something I don't see /ic explaining often. It's what they'll teach you in figure drawing. There people set up there drawing boards to the side of the subject not in front of it. Sorry if I'm too autistic to explain this where it makes sense.

All the drawing and all that is ok.. is ok, could be better, could not, but the color is the real thing. The woman looks out of place because of the wrong color choice.
The good news is that you can actually excercise that in that same painting, just put a layer on top and start coloring, explore, see references, and try and try in new layers. The work is done, leave it dont add more lines or corrrect poses, etc, but you can try that.

Its seems like you just put the shadow in whatever way. there's always gesture in the flow of the muscles, but in general a neutral pose like this, you've just got to find what small bits of movement there is, like her head turning, the left hand that is holding something is pushing out etc.

for the overall line of action, a straight line isn't a wrong answer, and whatever the arms and head is doing can flow into that.

>> No.4010896

>>4010877
that change everything, i was seeing the right up panel for that, it was hardly to understand what is there in black and white, but with colors just need a correct color to define everything.
I think you need to put the colors first and then the shadows, the color alone can build everything. Then you could think more easy in the light direction and all that.
In my opinion the shadows could be right, but you need to retouch them more looks kind of messy

I got a /beg/ question, what's the difference between chicken scratching and when artists do sketches that look like pic related?

Oh, and if you want the eyes to pop out, try darker colors in the background and with the skin. The contrast helps. Purple is the opposite of yellow.

The lighter pink/purple tones with the thicker lines is the sketch underneath, which are to be removed. The darker lines are the more finish lines, and most of them will end up in the final draft. While this is slightly chicken scratch, the lines are very thin and still defining shapes. Chicken scratch is too thick to define a shape, and shows that the artist isn't confident in their lines yet. I hope this makes sense, let me know if you need clarification. Eventually, you'll just know it when you see it I guess.

got it, I'm just wondering cause I need to figure out a way to go about my sketches. My process is usually drawing the pose either from memory or through ref and roughly placing stuff where it should go. Then I'll open up another layer and construct the ribcage and the hips, add circles for joints, etc. Then I'll do one more layer with a light brush, and then move on to the lineart.

Another question though, How should I start studying muscle anatomy? I just know the location of certain muscles thanks to me noticing stuff in art studies.

>> No.4011272

>>4011253
What was the first question?

For the second question, you may not like this answer but just keep studying. II would try this-- instead of drawing a person with skin, draw them with muscles and pretend the skin is transparent. It may help you learn the anatomy a little better, if not just keep trying other stuff until you get it down. Don't be too hard on yourself if it's not perfect. In the computer age, it can be hard to remember that we're only human.

Do you see how he draws the rib cage from one shoulder to another in several lines? The reason he's doing this is to find the gesture and structure of the body. He has no problem going from point A to point B in one smooth stroke.

Chicken scratching would be drawing from point A to point B in several lines. Beginners do this because they're not confident hitting the endpoint. They're too busy trying to make the lines connect and thus ignoring the gesture of the object.

I've been going hard at the fundamentals and learning how to draw realistically but what I actually want to do down the line is draw cartoons (in the style of Cartoon Network and the like) so sometimes I take a break to draw some cartoons and judge if my fundamentals are improving my cartoon work. And I think they have. I thought I was getting memed but you really do start looking at things like form and shape and the way you put marks on a parper, differently (for lack of a better word).

Here's some fanart of Frida from Hilda and Connie from Steven Universe.

He probably means that lines on human form aren't one long smooth curve but rather have many bumps and apexes and valleys and you should pay more attention to those if you want to get a more realistic drawing. Arms, for example, don't look like long tubes.

Still good work my dude. Lots to improve but you're not so far off that it should be daunting.

While you should always strive to learn from somebody who you can respect or whos work you can respect, I don't see how learning gesture from proko would somehow introduce a fatal flaw in your developement.
There might be a point when you realize that it's time to move on because you want something more / different, but that is esentially true for anything and anyone.

How do you construct the pelvis and hips from the back and forshortened angles? I can do them in frontal and 3/4 view no problems, but back and forshortened give me a lot of trouble.

Am I still contour drawing too much? I tried to go more toward stick figures and I think I struggled somewhat.

Everyone does it differently. You can look up Aaron Blaise on YouTube, I love the way he does it.

Quick summary: block in the colours you want it to be, broad shadows, broad lights, then work from large to small brushes to create texture.

I didn't say proko sucks. Only his kangaroos and his pelvis bucket. he tries to sell this bucket idea as though its a simplified version of a pelvis, but there are about 8000 steps to it. it is fucking impossible to memorize and it looks nothing like a pelvis. ive tried it myself a few times. its absolutely ridiculous. you would be better off just using a skeleton as a reference. its his most useless video.
