He doesn't understand what it means to "do art" beyond technicalities. He seems to think that creativity/finished work is an emergent property of technical skill, rather than something you have to consciously strive for. He isn't involving art with life but rather treats art as an isolated space from everything else. Every drawing he makes exists within their own guidelines and can therefore never truly "fail" at their purpose, as their purpose is to only exist in the form that they happened to come out from his fingers. His drawings are never under any obligation to "look right" within a specific context. His drawings merely exist, and can never do wrong or right. That's why he can never set himself up for failure. He can never himself up for failure and therefore can never improve.

A finished piece demonstrates your true skill level. It requires you to put together your skills of composition, inking, coloring, anatomy, gesture, rendering, perspective, and creativity.
