itt: we post our older work side by side with a more recent one, preferably with similar subjects so it's easier to compare

(i was always inspired by these kinds of posts, and there's a lot of talented anons in here, so i'm curious where this will go)

rate each other's progress, give helpful advice

i'll start: first one is from when i just started learning fundies and the human figure about 2 months ago. i wish had a better example to show, but i mostly deleted my drawings at the time because i hated them @-@"

The character is a friends demongirl I draw every year for their birthday. 2018 was so bad, I scrapped the file and never posted it anywhere so it's gone.

When I look at the people who have done so much in 5 years I spent fucking around, it obliterates me. If your reading this, please, take your work seriously. This is what putting off anatomy and other fundies does to you, anons. Be better than me

>> No.3995795

Good work
your anatomy improved a bit, you have to work on the legs especially on the proportions between the leg and feet (feet are too small), the arm looks too long (the elbows begin near the end of the rib cage), knees look a bit too low; just on the top of my head.

I like that you started shading. Shading- even if its a little bit of it like flat colors- is a good thing to get used so you won't be lazy in the future.

Keep up the good work OP

>> No.3995996

You need to shift your proportions a bit if you want to draw cutesy stuff. You can't just put a cute head on a loomis proportioned body and call it a day.

This doesn't look like you take fundies seriously, sorry. The chair on the left has better perspective than the one on the right.

You need to draw contruction lines and check perspective in objects like this. The leg that's closest to the viewer looks crooked, the seat is not centered and more of it should be seen in this perspective etc.

That's a good point, thanks for pointing it out. I haven't really worked on faces yet, and I think that 'style' is a habit from my younger years when I kind of dabbled in drawing.

For the time being I'll stick with the classic proportions (in more dynamic poses) as my reference point until I'm really confident with it, while also working on the fundies (I think my perspective/spatial awareness is still lacking, all my drawings look kind of flat)

Can you not read? The one you quoted didn't improve in almost anything, he went from pillow shading to muddy pillow shading over the span of two years. Didn't learn anatomy, didn't learn construction, didn't improve his colors, etc.
I don't talk about proportions because they are obviously supposed to be stylized, but going so far as to say that everything going on is style is being facetious. His 2018 work is the best in my opinion, probably due to the simplicity and cleanliness.

Not really, desu. Taking into consideration the time they took to achieve what they did they improved very little, which is not bad, it's just slow. I unironically think /tg/ is a better place to learn art than /ic/ at this point, the drawfags there are far more helpful than the people here that want to reinvent the wheel because they think too highly of themselves and the problem is obviously in the material because they are perfect and don't make mistakes. See, it's retarded to me, for one, that this art board shits on Loomis while all the people in the field not only say they use his methods but go so far as to praise his teaching skills and material, but I guess /ic/ would rather drink from the regurgitated Loomis teachings from the gooks, just because.

That pic you posted was kind of a milestone for me. It's the first time I felt I'd designed and finished a drawing instead of just practicing in my sketchbook.
But like I said, the May witch was pretty bad, quick thing even for the time.
This was the best I could do back then, in fact it's dated Apr 30, one day before the witch. The garbage giant was me going all out with ink and G-pen and also wasn't representative of my average work. Most of it fell somewhere in between that and the witch. I'd already been practicing since March and my stuff from the very beginning was really bad.
But I also drew often from grade school up through high school, for whatever that's worth. Stopped through college, found /ic/ last year, got back into it, only more seriously than I ever had.

It's hard to answer "how" because so many realizations went into the process. In general, I studied fundamentals but not always or primarily. Most of my time was drawing from imagination. Until I'd get so disgusted with what I was doing that I'd study hard for a few days or a week, and gain a lot. I'm always looking at artists who inspires me, seeing what I can learn or take from them, always trying to push my style and appeal. You may not be able to draw the best (I definitely can't), but anybody can be creative to compensate.
And when a drawing would fail, I'd feel bad, but then think about how I needed to change my approach. And ultimately I just genuinely like doing it so no matter how low things get, I find my way back to it.

i see a little improvement from six months ago, and that's a relatively small amount of time depending how much you draw and what you draw, so don't be too discouraged. being slower isn't necessarly worse, speed comes with experience.

If you were applying what you've learned, which would be construction, proportions, and anatomy, you wouldn't be at the same, if not worse than the 2012 one. You're stylizing without understanding anything. You need to drop your weaboo shit right now and post me two sets of loomis heads. One with JUST basic head construction with no features (aka Ball, dividing lines, jaw) at a front, 3/4ths and side view, and then do another set but with the features. And not the fucking weeb stylization features. As close to realism as you can.

If you can't do that, we've found your problem. You've drawn the wrong shit for YEARS and it's to the point where you've crippled yourself and should start over from the basics. No amount of study can help you if you refuse to learn.

the lines work in your 2019 work doesn't even seem too bad and now there's line stabilizing software built into most program or you can download 3rd party one to help with line art.

Your anatomy just seem to have gotten a lot worse, you lost a lot of details in your drawing over the 7 years, and the way you draw eyes now especially the one on that naked chick is just so god damn unappealing and bad it look straight up like an example of symbol drawing. How did you spend 7 years and 40GB of art tutorials and draw eyes that's literally leaving the face?

>> No.4004202

>>4004179
Aw dude your head construction is fucked. That explains a fuckton. The dividing line on the ellipse is where you follow the brow line. the bottom of the nose should land on a line that starts at the bottom of the ellipse. The bottom of the chin should be the same distance between the brow and nose line, so take that length, and measure down from the bottom of the nose. The features are also waaaaaaay too massive for the head, thus making everything feel too narrow.

As much of a fucking meme that Proko is here on this board, rewatch both of these videos, try again, and post results.

In 2010-2012 drawing for me was an intensive process. That sketchy 2012 lined page was one of hundreds and I'd look at things and draw continually for pages, hours, days, with a lot of time and energy put into the backing of it. This included a lot of anatomical sketches, observations and a lot of experimentation.

Art for me grew slower after that due to college. I had a breakdown after I was diagnosed with mental illness in 2016 where I more or less threw all my art away and 'quit', throwing away 8 years of progress.

Art since then has been, sparse to say that least. I haven't yet found the motivation or backing to put the kind of intensity of practice today that I did in 2012 or to make real artistic progress, that's why I'm revisiting /ic/ today.

Also, all my digital lines I've posted are already using a line stabilizer.

In your case it may actually help to do some tracing and copying to get a feel of line length, strokes, and curves, and would help in drawing line art. It would also help to develop your visual library, which seems to be just awful.

This is a good example of why "just draw" means nothing.
I don't know how old you are and it could be a reason of why you didn't improve during that time.

However, when you study, don't do an exercise only to say you did an exercise. You have to UNDERSTAND what you are doing.

>>4004086
>I read the books and diagrams
Read, try to understand how it works, draw. Does it look right? No? Repeat.
Now close the book, take a break, come back and draw from imagination. Does it look right? Do you know what the hell you are doing? No? Open that book again and work on it.

>tried the exercises and watched the videos
When I read that, I imagine that you took your pencil, you drew something, it didn't go well, or you got something than somehow looked like what's in the book and you said "Well I tried.". Nothing was learned but you "tried".

You have access to a lot of informations with those books but they won't magically make you better and do the work for you.

Take your time and invest yourself more, in a couple of months (even weeks) you should get better results.

It's more like, I saw an exercise or a video, paid attention carefully, copied it for a few hours to pay lipservice, thought it was a neat exercise and carefully finished.

Then the next day I drew something completely different and forgot about it or looked at a completely different lesson.

You have to actually understand what you're reading not just copy the pictures in the book and count that as learning. Start over from the fundamentals instead of trying to stylize art before you even know what it should look like without stylization.

At this point I'm not sure you can improve but you can try. (Also I don't see any guidelines at all in those drawings, learn those and use them )
