Lets divorce whatever political agenda you're pushing, /pol/tard, and instead take a look at this girthy lad in /studygroup/ mode

Hands down, my favorite part of the image isn't the demon, or the knight even. Its the background. How soft he has done the background whilst hiding it over layers of dust and steam gives the entire piece another layer of enjoyment. Since the graphic read of figure, groundplane and figure dominate the eye as soon as you look at it, when you finally realize the background it really is pleasing. The rows on rows of skeletons adorning the walls are a fantastic narrative device, and how soft they are, and the edgework with them are the touch that elevate this piece beyond his usual work. At least for me.

past that, everything is more or less ruan's standard fare. The ever so tight rendering of texture that gives his work a tactile feel. A very clear graphic read that clearly illustrates the work's narrative goal (big guy is going to fuck up little knight) The lighting accentuates this by making the big guy the most important by slapping the spotlight on him.

The ambient lighting does well on first read, but it gets a little tricky when you break it down. There are a few choices on the knights armor (mostly helmet) that can confuse light sources a bit. But that could just be concluded that there is a wall behind him giving that pale light. In addition, the reflection of the ground on the knights armor is very saturated, but the light off the ground isn't really the same color, neither is the ground, confusing things further. The ambient light hitting the left of the rocks hints that there's fire in the distance, but it isn't really shown in the knights cape cape though, so I guess just that portion of rock is more reflective? all of these are minuscule in the grand scheme of things, and all of them where done to increase graphic read, so they can be forgiven.

to continue:

the red petals are an interesting touch, they fit as a device to lead the eye back and forth between combatants, but narrative-ly make no sense. Why are there petals there? wouldn't blood splatter work more?

and in addition, if anyone can explain why there seems to be red "light fragments" on the one rock, I'd be grateful. They don't seem to make much sense in any form, atleast to my tiny westerner brain

Lastly, and this one is more of a hunch, wouldn't the shadow being cast by big boy be larger and stronger? it seems to dissipate and not be cast out in front of him like my brain seems to think it should be. Could it be that the atmospheric light is far too strong to create such a shadow?

all in all, it's not taking its spot as my favorite Ruan piece, but it is a fitting and pretty work that further rounds out his portfolio and position he has found himself in

If this is a "study group" thread, then let's make some shameless studies. Let's break down the image and see what we can learn from it.

>wouldn't the shadow being cast by big boy be larger and stronger?

I believe the light source is coming straight from the top, and rotated a bit towards the camera, so the cast shadow wouldn't be a long shadow in front of him, if you try putting an object under a lamp, hitting it from the top, you can see that the cast shadow stays under the object. The cast shadow ends where the light on the floor starts, pic related is my interpretation of it.

That looks pretty good but the bright light needs to be brighter, if you color drop the painting you can see he went almost to white, which is what makes the figure pop out so much.

I will be posting a study myself by tomorrow, I'd like a study thread to take off if possible, even if OP was a faggot.
