Ive heard taking breaks is important, whether its 5min, 10min or 20min.

But what do you do during your break time?

I dont really know what to do. If i start to play video games i end up playing video games and then its hard to return back to drawing.

Any good ideas?

Write some notes to myself on the piece, refill my water, do some stretches for my legs and hands, grab a snack and do one chore (like dishes or laundry) if it's a longer break

I used to smoke so I went outside and looked at nature. Now I either go outside and look at nature and sort of space out if I want to stay focused on what I was doing but rest a bit or switch tasks if I'm hitting a wall but not worn out. Having a guitar or something to diddle on is great.

The important thing I've found is to judge your mood and rest and reflect or disengage completely. Brain food is finite and takes time at low activity to build back up, little breaks keep you from burning out quickly. Attention is finite and fractionation, switching between tasks, can make you more focused.

Every couple months I take a week or two off and I feel like I synthesize a lot of skills and come back better than I was.

Are you a freelancer? I'm thinking of taking a break now, I've been working really hard for the past 6 months. What do you do during the break? I have no commissions at the moment and I'm a little anxious, not sure what to do with myself, always feels like I'm wasting time

Hobbyist. I know some fine artists and they go camping or hit up some museums. It's so easy to go up your own ass that something as simple as binging movies or just not fucking with art works wonders.

There's a thread here asking which artists are fit. I have the idea of taking short breaks like those to do squats while thinking and watching my drawing. It's easy since I have lots of moments of pure meditation in the creative process so I might as well get an ass out of it.

I gotta keep reminding myself to get up every hour to stretch and make the blood flow.

You do something that relaxes and energises you
get something to eat, walk about for a bit
the idea is to get your mind off art for a short while

From what I read in a recent study, the ideal cycle for productivity would be a break every 1H30, use the 20 minutes break to nap. I didn't test it though.

Get off the workspace, do something physical. Kettlebell swings, do the dishes, clean up your kitchen, etc. Just physically get away from the work and do something else.

Genuinely and unironically, huh?

It sounds like you should stop doing that
