It's the best to make up your mind and stick to 1-10 books, but know the purpose of each. Maybe in book A the faces are great but bodies aren't, in book B there are well drawn hands, so you know what to reference off which book, it's the same with references. One artist draws good folds, the second has great colors, third nice eyes, so you mix and match what you like from each. I agree a slap is very necessary because you can hoard endlessly and not use them, put shortcuts to favorite books on your desktop assuming it's not completely cluttered, you're supposed to notice them being there

Without question, Leyendecker excelled at depicting male homosocial spaces (locker rooms, clubhouses, tailoring shops) and extraordinarily handsome young men in curious poses or exchanging glances. Moreover, Leyendecker never married, and he lived with another man, Charles Beach, for much of his adult life, who is assumed to have been his lover and who was the original model of the famous Arrow Collar Man

Are there any books or lectures that go into the specifics regarding manga creation? I've read Scott McCloud and that one Hirohiko Araki book, but those were all scarce of any actual examples. manga artists are largely self taught and make everything up as they go. there's no formal education for it. they churn and burn out for those reasons, and there are more idiots who dream to make manga for a living to replace them.

Many comic artists are self taught as well; not many people actually get a formal education either since what programs exist are limited to select schools. Then you already know the answer, it's not in a book. You work with mentors or a circle on improving your work. You can't read it, you have to try and fail enough but at least learn to write a good story along the way. Screenplay material is going to be your best option and it's what's often recommended.

http://www.marshallart.com/reviews/sequential/ and Alan Moore's Writing for Comics are some things to look at. Again, there won't be manga specific.

Forgot to add, find a short story or play and turn it into a comic. You can try something like storyboarding a scene several times. See what works and what doesn't. That's the easiest way to work on the planning when you don't have to worry about the source material creation.

Look for books about screenwriting and composition, assuming you already know how to draw. The books that talk about comics will also serve you. The mangas are comics that are read backwards and can have more pages, in short.

I also don't think that any western publisher will allow you to make a comic book backwards and with many pages.

I'm actually already reading Robert McKee and Lajos Egri's books, but thanks. I have a physical copy of Alan Moore's Writing for Comics and it's trash. If you've read any of his scripts you'll know he's infamous for being obsessed with the minutiae of every page; he's an artist's personal hell to work with.
>Again, there won't be manga specific.
I want manga-specific. Why does it seem like scriptwriting for manga isn't very common? What few English-speaking resources I've seen always mention starting off with something called NAMEs, which are essentially storyboards for what could eventually get picked up and become a manga. This runs completely in the face of western comics where you can find numerous examples of different scripts over the years from all kinds of writers on a whim. I just can't find examples of ones from any actual mangaka, though; like do the storyboards and dialog not exist separately at any point during the creation process? Is that the real reason why manga is stereotyped for "showing" rather than "telling" because artists don't know how much dialog they're gonna have on a page by page basis, and are thus forced to leave enough room to accommodate?
>>3991488
>Look for books about screenwriting and composition
Way ahead of you. I still have questions regarding the differences between comics and manga, though. Most of the books I've read thus far haven't been very helpful; getting a hold of scriptbooks on the other hand, has, hence my question.
>I also don't think that any western publisher will allow you
I'm sure some indie comic imprints would be open to the idea, but currently I'm not interested in anything but self-publishing (which is a distant goal, anyway) so I don't think that really matters.

>> No.3993838

>>3993476
>Why does it seem like scriptwriting for manga isn't very common?
Because they dont have a history of using screenwriting for their comics, and why would they? Manga is manga, film is film is one way ive seen the thought expressed. They just dont feel the need to ape another industry.
>What few English-speaking resources I've seen always mention starting off with something called NAMEs, which are essentially storyboards for what could eventually get picked up and become a manga.
Incorrect, youre confusing manuscripts with names. Names are just initial drafts that are shown to an editor for a chapter so they can get greenlit to start on the final draft.

>This runs completely in the face of western comics where you can find numerous examples of different scripts over the years from all kinds of writers on a whim. Depends on the Mangaka. Some have all the dialogue seperate, some dont. Ive noticed that historical drama mangaka tend to tackle them seperately.

Because it would make things more organized? Even though screenwriting as an accepted standard in film pre-production isn't nearly as stringent in the western comics industry, it still allows artists and writers to understand the structure of a given page, which is why it's seen widespread use.

Thats up to you to do. Cinema is cinema and manga is manga like I said. >Because it would make things more organized?

Seeing how commonplace it is for the mangaka to be both the writer and artist, screenwriting just isnt a necessary step for clarity.

I was implying that the western comics industry is multidisciplinary (ugh) in part thanks to its use of screenwriting techniques; it's super accessible not just for fans but also for aspiring comic artists. You're telling me that its manga counterpart is neither of those things?
>Given how long they've worked without them
You're avoiding the question again. I want to learn about the different ways mangaka organize their pre-production efforts. I want to know why many of them seemingly don't bother with screenwriting compared to the west (you know, besides some non-answer like "they just don't feel the need to"). I want to cut through that romanticized image of the artist-author, and get to the gritty details.
>screenwriting just isnt a necessary step for clarity.
How exactly are the names edited, then? With a screenplay, you can point exactly to whichever scene or dialog before a single line is drawn. I've watched many episodes of Toco Toco and Urasawa no Manben and I almost wish they focused more on all of the nameless assistants working alongside instead of the mangaka themselves.

they don't have time and they're not trained. it's "i have 2-3 days maybe to write this so i can't fuck around for the perfect storyline when the readers only care about words/actions and not making ever panel something you can hang on your wall" and not knowing if they're still going to be making manga next week so they have to make sure the story can last forever.

Thats not what I said at all. You dont need screenwriting to be accessible. Your inability to entertain this notion is asinine.
>You're avoiding the question again. I want to learn about the different ways mangaka organize their pre-production efforts. I want to know why many of them seemingly don't bother with screenwriting compared to the west (you know, besides some non-answer like "they just don't feel the need to"). Im not avoiding anything you mongoloid, there's a different standard, and every single mangaka has their own conventions, and you arent going to find anything that tells you how each and every single one does their thing. I told you the exact reason and you refuse to accept it, fuck off
>How exactly are the names edited, then?
Are you stupid? They roughly draw out the whole chapter; they use placeholders for characters or draw them simply, get the rough panel layout down, and add dialogue. Take any manga page and imagine it drawn as simply as possible and apply that to the whole chapter, thats all the fucking name is. The editor will then say, "oh, this isnt clear enough", "this dialogue is clunky", "this type of angle or view would work better" This isnt fucking difficult to understand, you spaz.
>I almost wish they focused more on all of the nameless assistants working alongside instead of the mangaka themselves.
All they do is draw backgrounds, unimportant characters, ink trivial shit, and apply tone. They're important, but only to a point. For someone that claims to have watch a lot Manben, you know fuck all about how they do anything

Ran out of text box

This anon is also correct; Time is a very critical factor, and shounen mangaka have even less time to first do a draft for the story/dialogue, and then the art, and then doing them together, as theyre a almost always a weekly deal. Its the seinen and other monthly genre's that have the time to tackle them separately, and often do, just because there's generally more of a story focus. Western comics can afford a month for their pipeline, manga cant at times, so they get as much done as possible on each pass, this is incredibly simple to grasp

>you arent going to find anything that tells you how each and every single one does their thing.
Why not? I'd be satisfied with just one. Again, you can find numerous how-tos and scriptbooks from western comic artists over the past thirty fucking years elaborating on exactly what I'm asking for. Why can't I find anything from actual mangaka other than like, Hirohiko Araki's utter schlock?
>every single mangaka has their own conventions
If you've read anything pertaining to screenwriting in the western comics industry then you'd know every single comic artist has their own conventions as well. I'm asking for examples, dipshit and you're not doing anyone in this thread a favor by spouting these vague personal anecdotes.
>This isnt fucking difficult to understand, you spaz.

I thought the relatively recent toco toco episode on Shinichi Sakamoto was interesting in that he has a whole repository of custom assets (like hair) to plop onto whichever figure he ends up drawing. Do seinen mangaka follow the same conventions despite having more time allotted? etc.

Leyendecker's live-in boyfriend, Charles Beach - in addition to being one of his favourite models - basically ran his front office, and eventually took control over many facets of his life, making it difficult at times to interface with his family (brother Frank and sister Mary in particular) and peers.

Leyendecker had attempted to marry a young female model of his - Phyllis Frederic - probably more as a "beard" to keep up appearances than anything else. He asked her father for her hand in marriage, but she was only 16 at the time, and her father refused. Frederic later claimed that she had not known of Leyendecker's proposal until she was 65.

I'm working on getting you something. Like I said in >>3997890, it's a heavy oversized book. Luckily, we all have smartphones with good cameras in this day and age.

It's interesting how Leyendecker painted the Arrow ads in different styles. I'm trying to see if there's a correlation between the years the ads were done, or maybe a difference in what (or whom) the project(s) was completed for. Sometimes there're those broad sketchy strokes of paint, and other times, a near photo-realistic fine-ness to them - yet they are all for (presumably) the same customers.

Maybe as I make my way through the text there will be an explanation.

A big part of the middle of the book are his covers for the Saturday Evening Post, which look a lot like the work of Norman Rockwell (it's the other way around, actually - Rockwell's work looks like the earlier Leyendecker!), but interspersed with those pages are full-page paintings that bear the same broad-stroke aesthetic as some of the Arrow ads; pic related.

Was gonna make a thread but I decided against it. So I'll ask here.

What's the best anatomy book for artists?

By "best" I simply mean the book with the most body parts in a variety of angles that are well detailed. I've looked at a few that are more focused on simplifying human features than showing individual body parts from different angles and perspectives. Even a medical book will do, though I dont care about organs.

Am I just supposed to wing it when it comes to musculature in different perspectives or is there a book out there detailed enough to cover this?
