I picked up a pencil yesterday and drew for the first time since I was a kid. Never had any sort of training, never took art classes seriously, and now the result is that my attempts to draw anything more than a 3d cube looks like a child's doodle. Not discouraged or anything it was a ton of fun.

Is there any merit to tracing as your first sketching experience? My thought is that I don't even know how to turn shapes into a drawing so if I take some time to trace and get even a small idea of how to move the pencil to get a sloppy result that's gotta be better than nothing right?

You're trying to run before you've learnt to walk because bodies in unusual perspective like your picture are not an easy thing. Study anatomy and rise difficulty step by step. All the "brushes" are just other peoples custom settings for the defaults. You can make your own easily. It's more important to use textures, but you're better off pasting a texture and adjusting it to your piece rather than dealing with a lot of the blotmaps people have out there.

There are also textures on this site. So few people make blotmaps that no one usually cares aside from the odd old dA or tumblr tutorial.

Does timed drawing sessions and quick gestures really do help with long term drawing?

I feel like I am focusing on polishing turds and like no time warming up. I understand that doing gestures help with fluidity in poses and stop them from being rigid. But how does being timed really help? To stop getting tunnel vision and focusing on the whole picture and only focus on the motion of the body. It's been a while since I done any gestures studies and painting and I end up getting so focus on creating one single picture, it feels my art is suffering.

I know I might be answering my own questions, I just need confirmation.

This depends. When you say "put clothes on it", are you using actual items of clothing? If yes, that is fine.

If you're sculpting the clothes or sewing replicas, then you can use the design of the clothing, but you must steer clear of the logo which has trademark protection (you'd be guilty of counterfeiting), or any other image on the clothes that are sufficiently creative enough to warrant separate copyright protection.

1) That can happen from time to time, for some reason the brush tips get misplaced or deleted. Go to the clip studio launcher and click the gear in the upper right, then maintenance menu>organize materials or organize material folders. That should force the software to re download/relocate the missing brush tips.
If that doesn't work, you may need to do "reset additional materials" in that same maintanence menu. Be warned that this can take some time and will reset personalized brush settings.

2) Sounds like the auto save/recovery. Check file>preferences>file > restore (top)
You can uncheck it or adjust the time, though I'd suggest make sure you are saving often if you opt out.

Those are primarily drafting tools. You can use them, but you really should focus on learning how to draw without them first. There's some overlap with drafting, especially in illustration, I learned a ton of tips and techniques to draw more accurately in college studying illustration, and I do use tools digitally when I need precise lines, but i learned to do it manually first. It;s better, trust me on that - it might seem easier now, but learning it first will pay off later.

yes. the weird poses can be good for studying form or muscles you dont normally see, but personally I hate them. Youll make more progress drawing normal poses and real people. Wasd and pen and blade on youtube if fantasy maps is what you mean. Theres lots of ways to generate maps. Random stuff usually best, like dropping macaroni on paper and using edges for coasts or other random shapes. Computers are better for generation and lots online for that. Get the basic random map or use real maps to "steal" your coast lines. If you want real rules for maps and land masses, im not writing it all out for you. Main one to understand is rivers start in mountains and flow to oceans. Lakes are low lands these rivers pool in. You can have multiple rivers feed a lake, but only one river continues on to lower lands/oceans.

>> No.3998034

>>3997981
>Or is the notebook fated to fall apart if it's 300 pages?
From my experience this is the case. The one thing I've learned is that stitched hardcover sketchbooks last the longest, but when they fail they fail hard.
I guess it's the same as any other large-size book, the larger it is the more difficulty the binding has in maintaining the integrity of the book. Add in constant manhandling and flattening when you sketch and draw and you have a recipe for disaster.
Stick to smaller books, large ones are just a novelty.

>>3997961
A lot of times they have a second window open for capturing the process. This one isn't the "active" window, so it doesn't zoom in or rotate like your main one so it appears more streamlined than it actually is.
Although, there are speed painters who don't bother with zooming in often because they are going for speed over quality/detail. They also tend to have incredibly large monitors to make up for this fact, though.
I guess the simplest answer is "it varies"

>>3997820

If you are going the physical route you'll need to get a hold of a publisher (indie or not) to find out there specifics on file formats, size, color, content regulation, etc.
Otherwise, starting steps is making sure all your "pages" are the same color (rgb/cmyk) and dimensions. After that it depends on the publisher on whether you need to send them all your image files in their desired format or if you need to compile them all together in a PDF.

If you are going to be learning something it would be worth it. Art is weird in that a lot of different methods and mediums can be applied to other methods and mediums. Anyone know what is done to get the shading on the cape, buildings behind/below Superman, the bottom half the wrecking ball, etc? Is it as simple as it seems and just 'color in' the area with a 2B or HB pencil? I can see lines and directionality at times - are these all just for spotting blacks when inking and line weight/stroke size/etc dont matter?

Example - the wrecking ball at top has slightly darker line weights for the shaded in area near the gradient/hatching lines. On an inked piece, this is all going to be black, so I assume its just random shading and didnt care about his line weight, but you can clearly see different shading for parts of the bottom half of that area with distinct line directions

You answered many of your own questions. This type of shading is just flat tone/value in most places to show where the blacks will be.

In any drawing its typically good practice to have your strokes follow the form of what you're drawing when shading, and the artist does that here even though the shaded tones are going to be black.

Notice however he DOES NOT leave out the core shadow on the figures and on objects like the wrecking ball. That's important and the inker can decide how he wants to implement it.

DO NOT convert your image to CMYK. It WILL shift your colors, and if you have the wrong color management settings, you'll mess the file up. Let them convert it.

for grayscale markers it depends what youre going to be using them for. copics are good but expensive for just b/w sketching. id say prismacolor markers. i use really cheap ones i got from a scrapbooking store bc i wont feel bad about using it up on quick studies

maybe I'm right, maybe wrong, either way the real question is how to figure out how to plot something that looks as beautiful because it's not very intuitive and seems more artsy than based on some realistic depiction of the scene lighting

I had the same experience when learning heads from Loomis. I realized his head construction looks "easy" because he's experienced, and there's a lot more going on with how he divides the sphere to form a good head (you know, stuff that if is incorrect, would throw off the entire head...)

So a beginner attempting something that looks easy but is actually easy only because of experience-- would naturally be frustrated.

If a material seems too hard to learn, it's probably not you. Maybe there's information omitted that the author thought was obvious. It's best to look at different material. For me, what worked was cube construction using bridgman method-- obviously won't work with everyone, but the key take is to find material that clicks. If learning heads specifically, I also
recommend doing skull and asaro studies rather than the drawing books (even just pictures is immensely helpful).
