What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Overall I think it's pretty solid. The expression looks a little odd, but I feel that might be intentional. Her mouth is stretched out very wide, if you want to go for a more standard "cute" look you may want to make her grin less wide. I feel in the future you may want to try pushing your line weights more to make it more visually interesting. I feel it could help add more "oomf" to your work, if that makes sense?

Hair is too stiff and jagged. It's got no flow.

Eye folds are, anatomically, whacky... and it makes the character look too old, which is not cute.

When you're going for that whole teeny-tiny anime nose thing, it's best to use as little detail as possible, at the very least, don't draw nostrils.

Neck attachment looks unnatural.

Shoulder, trap area is far too lean and muscular. Again, makes the drawing less cute, and don't act like you weren't going for cute. 95% of the modern anime aesthetic revolves around being cute. 100% if we're talking females under the age of 60.

Eyelashes don't look full, so much as wild and hairy. Maybe you're going for that what with the anthro thing, but it looks crotchety. Like an old man with an excess of ear hair bulging out.

If that's the case, you should go offer up some advice to artists here you see struggling with those fundies. The statement you're making is useless advice, because everyone knows fundies are important and must be constantly polished. If you really think there are people in this thread who don't have their fundies under control, go give them a (you), explain to them what they did wrong and how to improve, and maybe even correct it for them with a redline/paintover to show them how to do it right. Really anon, if you're trying to give good advice I think this is a course of action everyone would be able to appreciate. I think most anons enjoy getting insightful criticism and pointers on their work!

Just saying, he WAS being overly critical, but jeez, don't sugarcoat the guy ffs.

>>3989098
Don't beat yourself up. Starting over on a piece is better than wasting time fixing up one, trust me. I've learned if I'm having issues with something, I take a step back and look at things that would help me get past my issues. This is a bias of mine, but since your lineweight is rather bold for what it is, try making the inner lines (the facial features for example) thinner than the outer lines (the hair) just so it doesn't stand out too much. The critical anon does have a point about too much detail, I usually make it so if I go for subtle lines I end up with subtle details. If you want eyelashes that pop out like that, don't close off the lines, it's all connected on the outside of the form (its silhouette. I'd also avoid "mirroring" the eye shape, I've seen this alot in anime but this only works from the front view. It usually works better for me when done at the more side view whenever possible.

Just keep practicing anon. Imo you're better at it than you think. I'd suggest balancing your line weights better so it doesn't seem the same all over.

I did noticed the tangant. Wanted to fix that but I spent more time forcusing on the head then the body. I did wanted to remove the thinker outlined body but I got a bit aprhensive between wanting to outline the whole silloette (which is my usual style) and keeping it closer to the original. I agree with that honestly.

I really was going to just post the second post as is but I thought showing what I was saying would explain myself better. But thanks for the feedback, I can see it could be better. The finished work he did above after I read the rest of the thread looked pretty good honestly, so glad they got through it.

I was gonna quote all the idiots that were criticizing your art but I think it would just be easier to tell you directly that this entire conversation just reminded me why dipshits here call everyone crabs.

Your original sketch was -for all intents and purposes- completely fine. And because someone said the face was ugly/the smile was too wide and you bent a knee and changed your expressive face, you -in my opinion- completely killed/sanitized your own fucking drawing.

You just need more confidence in yourself. People here are fucking sanitizing your work by telling you shit like "oh that smile is ugly."

I think one thing that will help with your journey is to really nail down cross contours (not cross-hatching). Really helps define the volume of forms without the need of light. Cross contours are things people should have a good grasp on before they consider touching light, which is unfortunate because many teachers/courses don't talk much about them if at all.

After that, look at some folds/drapery stuff.

Some recommendations:

DrawaBox (no, it's not a meme) for getting your constructive drawing skills down as fast as possible

Sheldon Borenstein for cross contours and other fundamentals ... He also has video lessons on folds and drapery. His style is very much based on the old masters. Exceptional artist in his own right.

I heard good things about the Russian drawing course on NMA, but I don't think it really covers folds, but based on what I've seen it has a good mix of observational and constructive drawing.

Watts atelier looks like it has some okay stuff, but it's more for observational drawing, and it's a lot more expensive than the other options.

It looks like you're going for a commercial/editorial illustration type of deal here? So maybe check out the front page of sites like Behance and Dribbble where that style dominates, and compare your work with theirs. That type of illustration is all about the read, the silhouette, and thumbnail clarity.
I think the jungle, purple girl, and orange jacket read the best because they have the strongest contrast, i.e. dark silhouette against white or near white background.
The jungle is your best imo but it could still read more clearly if the man was bigger and the branches and trees smaller and less central. I guess it's a question of intent though. If it's about the man, it should be very apparent from the thumbnail. But if it's about the jungle, it may be fine as is.

I haven't posted anything in a while around here. I'll leave this, I'm mostly trying to practice color schemes. Tried a split-complementary of sorts, I think.

Ha, sorry, it was an easy pun. It's pretty good, The color for the girl one feels a bit muted for me, but could be my monitor calibration. I would say though to vary your shade and light hues on that character the rest looks good.

I was digging C or D. For the last lone one I think you could give more impact if you bring the straight leg with the spear, foreshortening it larger to the front? Like exaggerate it's size or length. The wings you could have a better shape for them, I'm a bit clueless with shape design though, I just think they feel kind of blobby.

Owchie it wasn't thematically clear then. Yeah I originally planned to make the top 3 panels blue like my reference but then I got too much into my story and made the blue side clash with the orange side, while giving the big 2 characters both orange and blue rimlight. What is this trash? You're progressively sucking the soul out of the work. The only improvement is the nose.
I really think you're confusing facial proportions with beauty standards, why the micro mouth? Now the winking dosen't make sense anymore because the cheek muscles aren't pulled far up enough with the mouth to make it tense up like that.
Stylization can't just serve to make things more appealing but also expressive, and those are two different things.

Take it as a red flag when anons use vague terms like 'hideous' or 'ugly' and try to make your work 'more appealing', citing the lack of it as a flaw. Some anons on /ic/ constantly look for mistakes where there are none and confuse exaggeration or generally deviating from perfect beauty standards as mistakes.

People can have wide mouths or pointy noses, receding jawlines or other stuff seen as unattractive but still anatomically accurate. What matters is what you want them to look like and how far you got to achieving that. Don't trust everything on this site here even though it's currently the best place on the internet for art crits, the same people that make mistakes in their art like you and me are also the ones giving crits.

That's because the skin isn't blended enough, making it look almost blocky. You lose a lot of plumpness. The blending on the hair looks very nice, so try to repeat what you did there. Just smooth everything out.

This might be more of a personal preference, but I'd make the blush line look more natural as well. Noses don't get that pink when blushing. Right now it looks more like a burn.

Overall though, I really like this. Very cute and mischievous character.
