What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Looking great but character design feels a little empty. Incorporate more feathers or "bone" armor. Maybe even a little bird buddy on his shoulder as some birds are seen "cleaning" the teeth of alligators. Show off some more elements that would make him look like a sorcerer or shaman. Some books, potions, etc.

i'm trying to get a handle on rendering in a proper process. hard round brush is the best
i suck at actual painting and mixing colors, thankfully there's a nice aesthetic with these solid color blocks.
any advice?

>> No.3982273

also wanted to ask how do you guys fill a line drawing with a base color efficiently? i used to trace the edges with a solid brush and then just fill the enclosure, but i guess if the lines are clean enough to permit it you could just paintbucket it. usually there are some small gaps between my lines which disallows that

I select the whole thing, then magic wand the parts that I don't want filled in. When that's done, I shrink and blur the selection, and fill bucket whatever's left.

People here always make it so damn complicated.

Literally just fill your picture with 1 color, hide the layer and select the outside of the lines, then show the layer again and cut it all out with Ctrl+X. Erase/clean up the rest as necessary, you'll never have a perfect cut depending on the lines ofc.

Curious to see how this develops. Regarding the lightening, is the floor actually glowing or just reflecting the light from above? If it's the first one then yeah, I'd definitely tone down the cast shadow and add some glowing on their face. If it's the latter then the blueish reflections on the body need to be more subtle, and that whole area around his crotch should be dark. But overall you seem to know what you're doing soo... Posted this in an earlier alt thread but it was as the thread was dying. Rough drawing but I'll be straight with you alt, this is about as good as it gets from me right now, and is the first thing I've drawn in days I'm fairly happy with.

I don't know what area to focus on for future development. I feel like just drawing and getting mileage isnt helping enough but there's so many directions to go from where I'm at. My weakest areas are easily expressions, color, shading and perspective so if anyone has any good strategies for practicing those things other than just draw I'd really appreciate it. /blog

This thumbnails poorly and is difficult to read even at full size. I think need more hard edges and contrast to foreground of the image, and likewise less contrast and softer edges to push things into the background. All these chromatic aberrations, focal blurs, lens flare and other gimmicks will not save a fundamentally flawed piece at the composition level. There's too much noise, difficult to read, the eyes go all over the fucking place due to the clusterfuck you made and the use of pure black to provide shadow on the figures blending in with the background does not help one fucking bit.

I'd try colorizing each layer to a flat color so you end up with fully blue, green and magenta characters, then getting rid of so many sparkles. It would be readable that way. It's just that each character design has too much going on and they clash, if they were flat colored it'd be less cramped.

Doctor I'm telling you
To cut me open please
Doctor I'm begging you
To bring me to my knees
Tear out all my flesh
And all my bones
Make me your cold machine
So I can walk alone
I want you so bad
I can't stand
The man that I am
Got this riddle figured (Do you?)
Someone must have sent you to
Orchestrate a shell game
Against the callouses of our hearts
I hate your subtle beauty (Do you?)
The way your doe eyes slow dance me
And beat like a million humming birds
When I draw closer
And the slope of your nose I detest
It's the kind that drove pharaohs crazy
Touch me I'm a hornet's nest
Sinking in Egyptian levies
Most of all I hate the way that I miss your sight
More than a blind man would miss his own eyes
Oh my, oh no
How can I be so shameless?
And let myself fall so
Impossibly for you
Oh my, oh no
How can I be so shameless?
It's 'cause I've learned that need deceives
And you are what I want

when i say tranny i don't mean it in the traditional sense, i think of it as a state of mind.
it's a psychological aberration, one that makes the tranny hostile to those legitimately seeking to improve or grow in some way, and it often also dulls their sense of humor.
all trannies are faggots, all faggots have crabs, and therefore all crabs are trannies. i call it the transexual property.

notice how the only anons who took the time to give me specific, intelligible advice were those who weren't tripping over themselves trying to get the last word in an autistic online argument. also notice how i followed their advice and as a result improved my work.
get your head out of your ass, i'm here to post my work first and foremost, but if some retard wants to get in a name calling match i don't have any reason not to kill some time flinging shit (and increasing the possibility that someone with at least a double digit iq will see my work and properly tell me what's wrong with it, rather than sperging out)

No Anon you need to lurk moar. You need to think about what others are trying to tell you. You spammed this thread begging for advice and you were called out on that by other Anons for being annoying along with criticism on how to improve. You have to accept that sometimes you will not get advice the way you want here when you act the way you do. It's part of growing up and taking criticism. If you can barely handle what people tell you here. How do you ever expect to make it as an artist in the real world? By calling everyone Trannies? And looking like a sperg? By trying the "no U" tactic and then complain on the other hand of everything being unfair?

You do not get to decide if you want to stay, if you are annoying and spam the thread the Janitors will not bother to keep you here. And the community here will complain about it. Think before you post and try to adhere to the community. If you can not do so then do not even bother coming here.

i suggest practicing drawing clear forms so it reads more 3D. the biggest thing im seeing now in your drawing is the tendency to draw a bunch of designs and shapes that are interesting, but you dont really understand how it might look in perspective. for example those back vent flaps and the shoulder spikes and the spine strip thing. once you figure out how to communicate forms clearly your image will look more polished and professional

to be frank with you, i've been posting here for a few years and haven't ever had myself devolve into this.
really i was just upset that some anons either gave me vague and noncommital advice like "improve your anatomy," or otherwise just an insult, in response to something i was proud of and wanted to get decent learning mileage out of.
anyway, i shouldn't have started shit over a shitty practice painting, but i was frustrated cause i felt like if i didn't get adequate enough advice to understand EXACTLY what it was that i did wrong then those mistakes would carry over to my next piece.
now looking back, i realized i'm actually a sperg having clogged up half this thread with my posts, taking something an anon said personally and trying to save face while everyone else is trying to get crits and mostly just staying silent hoping i'd leave or stop.
not to say i agree with everything that's been said about the pic i posted but i did get some crits that i do consider to be great (like remembering composition before i even start a drawing, or objects in the back being less saturated and darker), and i really think i benefitted from this thread despite everything.
you won't see this kind of behavior from me anymore, but before we go on with our day make sure to read the first letter of every sentence.

but for real though, i posted my work, some anon called it disgusting without any advice to accompany it, i responded with a quip of the sort of quality you'd see on /v/ and it went downhill from there. tranny is just the most recent/novel insult i've heard so i stuck with it, which made it look like i as projecting.
i'm just not confident in my own process, that's why i posted so many iterations of my pic, i was nervous that at every single stage something could be off and so i incessantly shovelled it in here hoping that someone would spot an error. if another poster acted like i did, i'd want him to leave too. sorry for wasting everyone's time

Sounds like a good idea, it'll probably improve the direction of the page flow and varying up the way it reads relative to its previous page.

Although it'll be a little rough to do that kind off change after adding so much detail. This is probably something that needed to be caught when it was still pretty much in stick figure phase. I wonder if I can just mirror that one panel.

... I just realize the deadline I set for myself for page 2_38 is today. I am still working on previous page.

I am not sure why you quoted my post, it seems unrelated. There is an amazing zelda drawing earlier in the thread might be much more appropriate as a response to?

Although I do have some thoughts about the drawing if you don't mind. There are different things that can be comment on, but I will focus on the profile of her cheek for the moment because it jumps out at me the most.

I will say the way you draw that particular profile is typical of some of the 90s visual novel character designs, I suspect the reason they jetted out from the cheek like that is because they needed to composite that part of the character sprites and fit it on mutlipe characters.

In either case, personally I would have brought the cheek outward and upward so it will begin it curve at the edge of the eye socket. On the top side, watch for the division between the forehead and the brow ridge, I think if you get the silhouette of these component correctly your character face might not look as tilted. Although I think you can still work in the lower cheek look as a personal style, its just not something i personally found attractive.

>> No.3986551

not him but you appear to be using a top right light source so at least that's consistent

Regarding shading, the workflow I typically use starts with modifying lineweight (heavier on closer objects and on the leeward side of objects), then darkening areas that are close together (folds of skin/clothing, the parts between hair decorations and hair, areas where zippers come together) to prevent that weird "floating layer" effect and to ground the geometry. I think people call this ambient occlusion.

Next up is simple geometry shading (which you kind of have done), with the darkest block on the leeward side and the wayward side untouched/left bright. Block out a centerline which separates the two rather than just starting from the edge and blending it out, then shade everything wayward of that centerline with one tone. At this point your drawing should already look well shaded and you can stop here without blending. Note that for more reflective surfaces, the very edge is slightly lighter than the core shadow as you get those skimming low-incidence reflections and may even be highlight for metallic pipes with backlight.

Finally, do cast shadows, which you seem to have forgotten. Draw lines from your geometry away from your light source and shade what they cover (e.g. under the skirt, under her right arm, the neck, below the hair twintail on the right side, under the left flap of the coat, under the breasts, etc), which helps place the order of things.

Other people's workflows are probably different and more efficient but this is mine.

>> No.3986559

>>3986551
ps. note that cast shadows for anything more geometrically complicated than tubes like arms/legs are really "computationally expensive", which basically means you have to think super hard about what shadow shape the casting object makes, as well as how that flat shape is deformed by being projected on whatever 3d surface it's casting on (i.e. the curve of breasts). Expect to fuck up a lot.

Ditto with mirrors, actually. You'll have to think a bit and you'll probably fuck it up many times.

>> No.3986563

I probably don't have any new things to add, unfortunately. I am sure you have heard it before, but I recommend Scott McCloud's "making comic", and additionally, you can also read a bit of Bakuman, while its author have some strangely old fashion ideas about relationships, its still interesting insight to the creative process. What I found most helpful is their process of writing story by directly writing in a storyboard, or "na-me".

Storyboard in this instance means a simple representation of your comic, it should contain panel layout, dialogues and simple placement of each characters in panels in relation to one another, even if its just stick figure with label on them should be fine. Even if your comic is only a few pages long it would be a good idea to do this first if you don't already have a concrete idea about where everything looks like from the beginning.

I can't stress enough how important making storyboard is to the process of comic making. Even if you just make a few pages of storyboard at the time, it gives you something iterate on, and since storyboard is suppose to be simple, its easier to make overall change. I have multiple storyboards often times of a sequence of pages where story plays out differently, where i read it to myself to see if one of these version work better then the other.

Once you have decided on how a story and dialogue plays out, you can then proceed to put additional work on top of it. The attached is a page where I got from storyboard to near final page. Although this is kind of an extreme example, but I started with relatively simple lay out on the top. There are entire chapter of that thing already done at the point I print it out in larger papers.

get comfortable with perspective and simple backgrounds by drawing them whenever you can. this is mandatory if you want your comic to stand out

study your favorite mangas/western comics. don't just read them- STUDY them. take mental notes of what you like- save screenshots of pages that you want to emulate.

framed ink is a good book to get you started on panel composition. get ready to jump out of your comfort zone, anon. if a comic is what you want to make, you won't ever be going back.

your coloring work could use some astounding improvement. As it stands right now it lacks depth. It comes off as something you worked a long time on but at the same time the end result is something a far better artist can shit out because they just didn't feel like working hard that day.

I'm not sure where you're getting hung up on at that stage of your art but I would suggest you try to curve off from relying on colors and instead focus first on your values. I also suspect that you might be heavily focused on painting within your underlying lineart and that might be eating away at your time. For a problem like that I would suggest just not giving a fuck about it and just throwing shit onto the canvas a la Bob Ross.

So far I have found out 2 approach to greyscale from artists like KKUEM and InstantIP. I have made 2 drawings based on the methods and I'm wondering which one is easier to start blending with.
