**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

It's alright to use it in general, but reduce it to minimum. Heavily stabilized lines usually don't look good and are only a temporary answer to the problem, I'd say reduce it until you can't feel the stroke delay anymore.

>>3986594
In the long run it's true. Tracing and copying is a very good way to reinforce a style, but granted you don't copy from only one person but a few chosen artists and develop your style over that, mixing in your own bits. The more artists, the safer.

Hitokaku is a good resource, sadly I find it heavily biased towards drawing male characters.

Before someone jumps at me telling me "I don't get it" etc etc, I did read all of chapter 1 so far (my moon skills are very high, there I said it) which covers everything about drawing the body. He does explain how to go about drawing feminized bodies, but there are way too few examples. The main logic behind studying with this book is to copy everything he does and play with it, sadly 95% of the picture examples you're supposed to copy are guys. For the rest, he just tells you "hey let's try girls too right?" and that's it. It's really easy to tell the guy has very little interest in actually teaching how to draw girls; which is a shame since I really like his methods.

You can go ahead and call me a baby who wants everything handed to him on a silver plate though, you wouldn't be too far from the truth.
The point is that it's frustrating since my main interest is to revolve my studies around drawing my waifu. So if I end up having to fight the material I'm learning for every time I reference his stuff, I find it ends up being quite counterproductive and unmotivating.

To start with, I've never looked at Hitokaku so I'm not speaking from experience. But most teachers instruct you how to draw a body as unisex, then there are lessons and additional notes on differences between sexes. It's definitely not good to be only used to wide shoulders and rectangular body shapes, you can notice artists who draw almost exclusively women have issues drawing men and the other way around. I would advise to go watch Huston instead, after all you always start with realism in your mind and alter the proportions to get anime. Although Hitokaku methods seem good, I wouldn't say they're revolutionary - they're overlapping with other teachers' methods, although the former seems much more friendly.

Well, if you want to draw good anime then yes. You need to be good at realism in order to stylize. Anatomy doesn't change, only the proportions. Even if you want to draw heavily stylized comics with actual spaghetti arms, you need to know your fundies. The only exceptions are probably the face and the shape of the skull.

yeah, if you're looking to copy a bunch of waifus, you won't find it in hitokaku. but the good news is that you can copy a bunch of waifus anywhere.

personally, i found the imbalance between my distaste for his style and my love for his methods really spurred me to draw along with his methods but make my own stylistic choices. it was very easy-going for me, and it filled in a lot of gaps in my fundamentals. the important thing is to find a resource that gets you drawing without feeling a lot of frustration. if you don't draw, you won't learn a lot. if you're frustrated, you won't learn a lot. so if there's another resource that beats hitokaku with those two criteria in mind, i think everyone would suggest that you use it instead.

I wouldn't really say it's supposed to be fun. Once you start treating something seriously, it stops being fun and becomes somewhat grindy as you're under the pressure of having to get better. Maybe it depends on your mindset, after all... You're supposed to feel relaxed before drawing gesture, sharpen your pencil etc, to not freak out when what you drew barely looks like the teacher's, but it's difficult. Sorry, don't want to be too ranty, I'm sure many posters here have the same feeling though. But figure drawing is definitely worth it.

>>3988022
Thanks anon. I have the same issue, I "backtracked" to drawing only cylinders and I've noticed they seem somewhat off, so I'd guess unless you can draw primitives in every possible angle you won't be able to draw gesture. I recommend Proko's pose sets by the way, there are a crapload with various angles even though they could be a bit more dynamic.

>>3988044
They aren't perfect anon, the cylinder on the very right looks the most messy (the one with the top facing up). Not the previous anon, but I'd say it's safe to practice them further. Try the pencil method from Huston, if you haven't

It's not that they're flat, but they're rushed and imprecise. You clearly eyeball everything and don't care about the theory behind it - boxes not following perspective lines, cylinders having fuck all to do with ellipses - it feels like you saw the images, copied them during a piss break just to get it over with and that's it. Get into the theory or just stop trying.

And >>3988011 is not Loomis in the slightest. Same thing - saw the image, tried to copy, didn't think WHY it's like this. There is a spine, but it doesn't follow the masses. There is the cape, but it doesn't follow the acromial. The principles are the core of this shit, not the shapes or forms - they're just the expression of what you need to learn.

Tornado looks like shit, because you either just decided "fuck it, I'll draw her head on top, whatever", or, and that's a scary thought, you actually started developing her head before rest of of the body. Either way, the bottom line here is: the stick figure is there, so you can fix it easily. Form is wrong, no worries, it's just one circle. Proportions are off - redo them. If the armature is not right, you don't go through with any of this shit. Period.

Not him but I don't get it. Why would you do that on purpose? You don't have to fully map out the vanishing points, but you still have to think about it. If a set of lines seems like it's going in completely different directions towards infinity, then you gotta buckle down and fix it.

What's holding you back is you my guy. You want to draw cute anime girls but cant spend more than 20 seconds on some shitty cubes. How can you get better at anything without putting serious time in it? You need to get out a ruler and make sure your shit is clean and in perspective. Thats the only way youre going to learn. Understanding is the only way you will learn and its clear you have no fucking idea whats going on.

None of yall want to put in any hard work and then complain cause you cant draw shit that people have spent 5+ years learning how to do. Tracing and copying references isnt bad but its the fucking slowest way to learn possible.

If all you wanna do is draw anime with no drive to learn the basics, then youre not going to be able to draw anime lol. ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT. I mean come on, yall have seen those progress pic memes where the dude draws shit anime his whole life. That is you. You are that if you don't put in any effort.

yeah, i am. thanks. limb articulation is actually one of the things i'm working on a lot lately, so i don't really know what i'm talking about compared to something like perspective. i think the key is knowing the insertions of major muscles so you can attach them in your imagination when you define the forms. i mostly practice defining the form well with simple tubes first (pic related bottom right) and then i'll use my knowledge of muscles and insertions to play with the shape after the perspective is defined. for example, with the arms, i pay a lot of attention to the deltoid coming from the shoulder girdle going into the lateral side halfway down the humerus.

learn the basics of muscles and where they insert into the skeleton or fascia, observe a lot in real life and photos to find the rhythms, and then try to reconstruct it on top of well defined forms. again, i'm still working through it so i don't really know what i'm talking about

hey, i remember giving you some critique a little while ago. i said that your forms aren't well-defined enough, basically what >>3988022 said. your freehand primitives don't need to be perfect, but they shouldn't be completely wrong either. the reason you create these forms is to help yourself see the illusion of depth on a 2d plane so you can draw more easily.

for example, a cube doesn't necessarily need to have all the lines diminish perfectly to a point off the page, but you should make sure that they at least converge. if they are diverging off into distance, that's than error in the wrong direction. so make sure you follow simple rules like: lines converge in the distance, or the further unseen side of the ellipse belonging on a cylinder should have a greater degree (closer to looking like a circle) than the one that's closer and visible. you can just pick up some of these shorthands by observation and analysis of the real world, or you can develop them yourself by going through the nitty gritty of linear perspective. the bottom line is: make better illusions with your forms.

Pretty much. Anything worth doing has hundreds of hours of fundamentals to learn to get better. Most people haven't sacrificed their time to get better at something, let alone something that only their effort alone can be pointed at to blame in a bad performance. Many people get discouraged, blame external things like luck or talent. Much like art, they see the end result but not the thousands of hours of learning and failing.

hey, not an anime pro here, but i've been meaning to study from the granblue fantasy art, so i'll start with the one you posted. i tried to understand the proportions i was being shown by the original work by deconstructing the perspective, and then reconstructing it again in a straight-on front view

the default loomis construction is not a perfect fit for most anime styles. specifically, the ball and mask form is OK, but proportions will need major adjustment compared to the slight changes you'd make when drawing a semi-realistic head. loomis showed you how to deconstruct the realistic human head into his abstraction. so i would use those same skills (form + perspective) to deconstruct the anime head into your own abstraction

let me know what you think

Imagine thinking people care when you say "hmmm I think I may copy this book". It adds nothing either. As an artist you go through countless resources until you find the ones that work for you. I don't blog about every single book I "think" about trying.

If things work, they work and get people to draw. If they don't then move on. There's a poster here who seemed to be underage/autistic/add and kept posting frogs when he couldn't even do primitives. Does anyone have advice for using these kinds of muted palettes (or resources to learn)? Up until now I've only done bright saturated coloring, so when I try to do more muted stuff it doesn't look right. Either it still looks pretty bright, or it looks too grey. I understand that a lot of it has to do with the surrounding values making greyish tones look different, but how would you pick the right colors from the color wheel considering you can't see how they'll look in their environment until you try them?

Look up Sycra, he has videos on colors, also study types of color palettes and try to figure out the color composition of your references and with time you will develop a "feel" to it

>> No.3994036

>>3993830
It's hard to give any advice on that style of piece because I assume anything like that has gone through hue/saturation and overlay/color blend layers to make it more evenly saturated. Definitely start with a sketch and values to figure out light and dark as that is most of the work (you can hue shift the value sketch you did to get started in the palette). Look up linran color tutorial and the part about color palettes. Using RGB sliders you can make really powerful color shifts just by playing with the greys. Grey is when the 3 sliders are equal. Using RGB sliders you're playing with adding colored light or taking it away. You can also control the hue, saturation, and brightness with the combinations of three sliders. This is convenient because we can easily increase or decrease the value of that color by moving the sliders in proportion left for darker and right for brighter. I find working with these methods more intuitive and powerful than the color picker cube/triangle as you move the color mixing from what you're seeing to inside your head ("this light is too cool, should I increase red or subtract blue?" instead of shifting the hue degree to a more red/yellow).

CMYK allows for similar powers of mixing as though you're pouring out digital paints, helps if you know the color theory of mixing too. It will result in more muted colors as well. Sometimes you can figure out they're using CMYK if the work features a lot of cyan, magentas/deep reds, or yellows. I saw BARD713 mention CMYK in a tweet but wasn't sure if he was referring to his work being digital instead of "natural color". It would make a lot of sense if he does though. I've found using CMYK or RGB sliders leads you to more interesting and less seen colors than HSV. Since you're not using a color picker, you're likely to stay more in harmony since you can't make as drastic of changes either. Some people think this way is stupid but it's up to what works for you.

by learning the fundamentals and actual anatomy. then when you copy the anime that you want to make you can understand the choices under it. anime is fairly anatomically correct except for the face. also you need to learn realism before you can stylize it.

you shouldn't really do anything until you have fundamentals. work through
dodson - how to draw
steve huston - making every mark count/vilppu drawing manual
d'amelio perspective or robertson how to draw

then you can work through whatever you want, like anatomy books, hampton/loomis, doing more anime and rendering. stick with analog and avoid digital for several months to a year. pencil/ballpoint and copy paper should be where you do most of your work. as a beginner you absorb a lot of info but you also need mileage and confidence before you'll notice getting better.

Don't use brushes with excessive size tapering if you're new to this. Use a round brush with only small amounts of size tapering and a tiny bit of opacity (~80%) and make your strokes clean by stroking over them several times when necessary.

probly has to do with the fact that a) it's not a well known software b) students learn to work on photoshop/illustrator so they never even think about switching and c) amateurs will just use free software like krita or paint tool sai
in japan clip paint studio is the most used by pros

It is. It's gaining popularity in the west, especially amongst comics/inkers. PS will still have a big presence because of its family of products and learning resources on top of being an industry standard. Digital painting theories will apply to any digital program.

Just draw this out of fun. But still struggling to draw full bodies. I have a bad habit of just drawing the loomis head

So I'm using hitokaku to kick away that habit and draw bodies already.
