Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others! don't take anything personal!
Please make sure your posted image is clear, downsized to around 1000 pixels wide, rotated to the correct orientation, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one.

Nice colors, maybe next time try to keep smoothing things out. Also the values around the eyes are a bit janky.
>>3973839
Yeah seems right. Could try to emphasize the color contrast, orange goes against blue so you could make the face colors more in the orange/red section and more saturated. To be very artistic you could use very saturated red in the ear and very saturated blues as accents on the sleeve.

Anyway, pic related is something I made today from a ref.

I like the way you've done the colors/values. The pose is really boring. There's some black squiggle in front of her ear and jaw that looks like she's got a piece of plastic twisting out of her ear. Try making a more fluid pose, maybe some contrapposto. Also that shield's sizing is odd, and its shape. Roman shields had that shape but were huge, almost as tall as a man's shoulders. Kite shields were really tall. Heater shields were too short to rest on the ground like that.

>> No.3975752

>>3975683
Study colour relationships and values, every part of her looks to be separate, under separate lighting. When you have pink skin and grey hair they still need to be related. There's no point in spending so long rendering the lips when it looks like a patchwork quilt.
Also I understand that she's wearing a pink tshirt but at first I thought her neck was covered in literal brown shit because it's sticking out of the anus of a big pink butt. The shoulders are too big.

Great subject, thumbnail looks excellent.
Upon getting closer a couple things jump out at me which could be improved.

Not going to comment on your colours and values, they're quite and help the expression effortlessly.

Digging this pallet-knife style, very textural: But with great power should come great restraint! Things can start to look very busy and overworked when the size of these flat shapes starts changing sizes.

This is only exaggerated further by the somewhat arbitrary direction of some of the strokes, which can be useful to bring attention to details in thing other than portraits, instead here lending a somewhat messy appearance, which takes away from the usually economic look of the style.

Overall it's a nice portrait, it can be hard doing edge control when you're using such a hard edged brush but you've managed to define all the important forms nicely.

it took me a few minutes to figure out that it's a lillypad. I think seeing a lillypad from the inside is an unintuitive shape. If you wanted to make it more obvious, you could add some lillypads and their flowers in teh background, like behind the frog, then people would understand it more easily. Also, I can't recognize what the fish has in it's hand.

I can't tell what is going on with the ladnscape but it looks like the silluette of dinosaurs?
Also It seems like there's supposed to be some meaning here, like the frog is expecting something from the sky which is why there's so much sky - there's some kind of scene set up - a dinner party with a bug as the course? But desu I think it's not very clear what the scene is.

TLDR your drawing made me say What for a while. add more stuff to make it clear

Give hair pink tones if you want warm lighting. Make skin bluer/grayer if you want cool lighting.

Essentially what I'm saying is this; the real reason for artistic struggle is not a lack of experience but a lack of perception. A lack of perception is basically a person not being able to perceive the fact of reality (i.e an exact value or line) and subsequently failing to translate that information into their artwork.

Its a question of being hyperconscious of the inability to translate the visual information that is processed (observation of reality) into a stronger piece of work.

Inaccuracy is a choice, not a skill. If it is possible to understand this, you will improve far faster and efficiently.

You're right. The only drawing book you ever need is Drawing On The Right Side of The Brain. Everything else is secondary and should only be used after you fully understand the book's main intention, which is to make your thinking more objective and analytical and less symbolic. Once you can objectively perceive reality and convey it through line, you will be able to draw anything you want through observation and study, and then going through drawing books like Loomis will be a breeze since you'll understand the concepts more easily. Even things like perspective will come easier because your brain will have better spatial reasoning. Even if you just want to draw anime or cartoons, learning RSB will make copying and blending styles so much easier since you will have a higher understanding of shape and proportions, and you'll more easily identify the unique characteristics of certain styles. It just equips and shapes your brain to perceive more deeply and then accurately convey/reproduce that information, and it's the answer to anybody who thinks they don't have talent. It certainly comes easier to some people, and you might call that talent, but it's more than possible to get your brain to perceive and think more objectively just through the techniques and exercises in that book. It's the first painful step to being able to teach yourself anything drawing or painting related and actually progress in improvement.

Open curves adjustment to enhance the values. Then put a fucking color dodge layer over it and start painting in lights. Maybe a flashlight hitting him headon and some ambient lights around his sides? Then a multiply layer for some hard, dark shadows according to the lights. Also use an overlay to make the trees paler since they're farther away and blurring into his skin right now. That's going to be the easiest way to up contrast without redrawing

Put a grayscale layer over it to check yourself while drawing. If everything looks muddy then you need to start using colors closer to the top and bottom of the palette square

Whew, this post reeks of Tumblr. A bit presumptuous, no? Last time I checked, catering to your crowd tends to drop sales faster than Sinead O' Conner's little temper tantrum. If he likes sexy female character designs, as a lot of men and women do, he has every right to draw and market it. As you're free to complain to the land whales and oversexed blue haired harpies that wail upon even the slightest exposure of skin.

The skin tone is close, but a little jaundice-y. Try blending in some red and some cyan, The different shapes of color you have on the face are good now, but I feel like you are shading with the same color darkened with black, rather than a complimentary, which makes it feel a little flatter, keep working on it though! The best way I can summarize what goes on in my head when I draft or rough out a sketch is to start with the basic primary forms in perspective then build secondary forms, tertiary, and then the details. From linework to rendering, understanding the fundamentals are key which I am still developing.

Other than that, thick lines for AO and objects up close, thinner lines for distant objects and details, practice fluid and deliberate strokes, etc.

I use the G-pen in Clip Studio Paint EX near exclusively, though I am open to trying out different brushes and tools if you guys have any recommendations.

sure, color dodge and multiply are "blending modes," which are just color correcting layers. they sit on top of your art. if you draw on a color dodge layer, it's going to make the image below brighter in those places. multiply does the opposite

if you use photoshop, procreate, sai, whatever, you should have these blending modes. mode programs do. there's dozens of different kinds of blending modes you can play around with

The fingers on her right hand are weirdly long, maybe you could push her knuckles forward more and draw the back of her hand covering the hilt or whatever it is. Otherwise I think it's fine on it's own.
I think you should raise (draw) her right elbow (so her forearm is pointing downward, elbow would be located beside her forehead on the image) this way you can include more of her, and I think it would add to the vertical flow of the image.

If this is the feel you’re aiming for, I think the design could benefit from being made a bit sleeker. The design of her boots, pauldron, and the colorblocking on her sword in particular could be more tapered/elegant to sell a more roguish image.

Couple of things, first is that the right side eye in your drawing is completely viewable, whereas in the reference a part of it is blocked by the nose, his implies an issue with the perspective of the face
This will be compounded unless it is fixed, which is why it does not look as you want it to look

>> No.3985328

>>3985318
Second issue, the angle of the plane made by the eyes and the nose, to simplify, d raw a Lin from the center of the pupils on both sides, compare this angled Lin with a line drawn on the length of the bridge of the nose to the tip of the nose, compare both lines, you will notice a difference of more than 20 degrees, which is enough to make it seem very off

>> No.3985333

Third issue, here is no line for the jaw, nor for the nostrils, assuming you have both please touch hem and not he smoothness of the natural curvature of the surfaces, hey can be most accurately portrayed through shading, though you might think that drawing a line for both will help, it will only make it seem off, it is best to sketch the area of shadow as area quick reference, then refine this shadow through layers of increased detailed rendering

In conclusion also please note the difference in the scale of the eyes and the face around it, I have attached a picture of an example, here you see the reference photo, the ratio of the width of the eye to the end of the eye to the end of the curvature of the face is roughly 3 to 2, notice it is roughly equal in you sketch, this is an addition of 50 percent more to the length of the face after the eye

I suck at color.
There's too many hues in this composition, but I feel like they need to be there. Brown for the wood, chartreuse for the weed, blue for the sky, yellow for the gold...
How do you work with this when there's this many colors and they all seem to be needing to be saturated?
Why are beach pictures so beautiful but I can't seem to make this one work? It shouldn't look so cartoony.

Also this is for a commission I don't even smoke weed.

Technically speaking maybe. But I feel it was an artistic choice, and the piece has 4 elements. The two boys, and the wall in the foreground and the balance is the dark figure in the background who is intentionally dark to reflect intent, and mystery.

You could add a haze but I think it's fun the way it draws the eye.

Decide on the temperature of your light. Warm light calls for cool shadows and vice versa. And treat saturation in a similar manner as you would with values. I really loved this version of the coloring, but I ended up going with this overly saturated kitsch style because I'm afraid the client wouldn't "get" the sky being red and it being dark.
I just went to the beach and pretty much everything is an overly saturated mess, even the houses are painted really bright colors.
However I'm a little worried this is still TOO much so, and wondering how I can make it look more realistic and less cartoony?
