What kind of gains can I expect to see from just drawing all the time but not following any guides or studying anything. Literally just doodling and drawing by myself. Can I really learn and get better this way?

You will develop your own style

you don't actually need loomis or anything like that. draw from life and references, gather as much information from that as you can, then put it into practice by drawing from imagination.

if you don't actually study things you'll see marginal improvements in technique but nothing else.

Depends if you learn.
Some retards follow some guidelines but somehow never learn anything then complain 10 years why they're still beg-tier.

its the but muh style plateau

enjoyment goes up and you got *some* followers and you learn how to finish a piece pretty fast and the what should i draw is solved easy

HOWEVER

its something to do and overcome, it gets old defending a style without fundamentals. im going back to studying now after drawing nothing but my own style for a year now.

This is true, and even still if you don't study at all and just doodle/draw for all that time you won't learn anything else. You will only get better at making it look right to you, but it'll be wrong. Seriously I know from experience. I drew for 10+ years without studying because it was just a stress relief hobby. Now I'm studying and my improvement is skyrocketing. It makes a difference to read those books and watch proko and find what works for you. Pic related are my arts. The full body one is without study, the headshots are with study. (I started studying this year.)

The full body looks like good improvement, but it's actually bad considering all the time in between. But it was because I didn't study and the images still look super flat and stuff and bland. No one will buy that.

I actually posted this recently in the sketchbook thread. This is my improvement with minimal effort to study fundamentals, not even grinding. This is me skimming Loomis and watching a few proko vids on his Loomis heads (and getting critique on 4chan). I started getting into fundies on the second pic and the third pic is the result.

So really it's up to you how you want to grow and how you want your art to look.

Just avoid embracing other styles, like anime. Find your own voice.

If you're actually observant you can totally develop gains without needing any of those books. The books are there to help people who don't normally have their brain wired to be observant like that.

Keep posting in /beg/ though, just to see if you're actually yielding progress from this or just stagnating into a specific style- a second opinion is worth a lot here.

so....no gains?

>> No.3982262

>>3982204
No, there are gains, much more than there would be if I didn't study. There's more for me to go, but it's just a small example of my progress and an example to show that you will stagnate if you don't study. Sure I learned from watching Pokemon as a child that people have shoulders. Observing is a big part of art, but it's not the only part. There are no shortcuts. You can have okay art or you can have great art.

Are you suggesting that OP should develop his own "unique" stylized artstyle(which will rely on existing stylizations anyway)?
Or that he follows the path of tracing-friendly soulless realism?

>> No.3982305

Honestly depends so dramatically on your approach that it's impossible to answer the question.

You'll never learn to make a cabinet by randomly hammering nails into wood, but you'd probably be able to make a decent one if you actually made a conscious effort, even without a guide. It'd take you longer, and you'd make more mistakes, and there's a solid chance the cabinet will come out the other end mediocre, but every cabinet you made would be a little better. Art, like cabinet making, is a craft, and you can certainly self-teach.

IMO the best way to learn is a mix of "I can figure this out myself" and knowing when to consult a guide. Actually trying to solve problems is useful for learning and retention, and sometimes people open up a book or video a little sooner than maybe they should. That said, there's so much good material out there that can really make the journey easier, and sometimes seeing a problem reframed by someone more experienced can be incredibly useful.

>> No.3982342

depends. if your IQ is below 120 you won't.

You'd get the same gains I got by mindlessly drawing all of my life up to college. Which is not much. You'll be known as that one guy who draws but this is absolute shit, I did it 5 years ago and while it was good enough to convey my ideas, I couldn't call myself an artist with that.
Also, of course this was in Paint so by hand it'd by a little bit better. But don't fool yourself. I also did "good" drawings while spending an hour almost copying a reference of Goku or Pikachu but that's not really drawing and you don't learn anything if you don't have a grasp of the fundamentals, copying only helps once you're kinda good already.

Around that time frame I also drew this by looking at pictures, and I didn't learn a single thing. By looking at it and some other references I could create an original drawing, pretty much an art Frankenstein to foool people into thinking I'm good, but that's being a producer not an artist

Of course, now that I've been reading and practicing for 10 months, I can learn from looking and replicating this image, but that's because once you know how the process is supposed to go, it can help you with the small steps to copy things. For example the shadow to define cheekbones on the left or how the upper lip of the right guy works but that's something that only matters once you understand the underlying construction.

But now I can whip out my pen and draw this from imagination and its way faster than any previous drawing I've done, after 10 months of focused drawing. Mind you I only grinded for 5 days or so at the beginning, all of my drawings were for fun but I was posting on /beg/ for corrections and reading theory and watching videos.

I like the middle one actually. Looks like she could be a character in metal gear solid

>> No.3982625

I'm also one of those people who drew for about 10+ or so years without studying fundies until now. I realized that one of the best ways to get better is to draw what you know you can't draw good. For example, I'm currently drawing full-body figures in unusual poses with attention to detail. After the drawing, I write down what I think looks wrong, then actually use references to correct my drawing (I list what else is drawn wrong and draw over my original picture). I would say that this has definitely improved my drawing skills. I'm not sure if this would work for other people, however. Would post my progress but I'm too lazy to scan and I want more gains first.

Here's where I got to by drawing from life and photos. Spent about an hour a day a few days a week drawing and sometimes painting with watercolor.
Worst mistake you can make is starting with drawing from imagination or copying anime/cartoons.
