What do they like in art and how should you cater to them? Ive noticed western normies really hate small lineart, when two drawings of the same skill exist, the fat lineart one will always get more attention.

i think normies just like really clean and polished pieces even if the fundamentals are wonky.
messy, sketchy pieces with great fundamental skills behind them are appreciated more by people who are training in art themselves. meanwhile the normie will see it and simply ask "will you finish it?"

note that i'm not making a statement of one viewpoint being superior to another, you just have to keep in mind who you draw for.

don't worry about appealing to a mass market until you are confident enough in your own artwork. Study hard, draw things you like in the off time. People will follow eventually, when your hard work strikes a chord with them. After that, something new from a series/game/movie will come out that you love, and you'll draw something from that. That's when you'll get followers. People inherently are able to tell when you enjoy what you work on, and it will spread

Colour seems to almost always win over black and white. Similarly a more detailed drawing is better than a less detailed one as long as mistakes are not absolutely obvious.

Average normie will be very impressed by over-rendered photorealism that takes 80 hours to finish one A4 sized piece, especially if its a portrait of [insert pop culture character]. Make sure to let them know that it took you 20 more hours than it actually did when you post your colored pencil photocopy portrait of Keanu Reeves so it sounds more impressive. More detail = better is what normies think and can mask a lot of gaps in skill.

Actually I hear lots of artists complain their sketches get more likes (on IG) than their finished work

You know those gay photographs of open sketchbooks, with pencils laid over top, and a mug of coffee beside it? THAT'S what normies like

Small brain - people like good art

Med. brain - people like the aesthetic of being an artist

Big brain - people like their personal fantasy. nerds are always going to buy into DnD warriors and big titty anime girls. girls are always going to buy into cute, slender mary sues standing at a train station with "discovery waits..." printed on top. snots are always going to buy into abstract art and classical paintings. people like what they wish they were

It’s funny that people love photorealistic shit when photorealism isn’t realistic. Our eyes can’t pick up the details a camera picks up.

The camera can also exaggerate a person’s features based on the depth of the camera’s lens

>making this post alongside threads where people complains about companies are required to have at least 80% of their employees being women or PoC and SJWs retweeting endlessly about how drawing a fictional brown character one shade too light is literally racism

I don't need /pol/ to tell me what to think when your buddies do the legwork yourselves.

I experimented with the most braindead people available in my country, not the normies that watch Game of Thrones, real normies that only watch reality TV, have never read a book and only use the internet for Facebook and nothing else.
They only like stuff that looks like fashion magazine ads. Really smooth and airbrushed faces (or secondly, figures) is peak normie art, the more you go towards lineart and different subject matter the less they like it. Even really good lineart will just elicit a "it's very detailed" comment if it's very detailed, but they don't actually care for it and they'd rather look at airbrushed faces any day. Not even animation gets a pass if it's just lineart.
Not biased when I say this but men are usually a bit more tasteful and will say things like Sargent etc. are good, women hate it and think it's sloppy, normie women hate brush strokes. Popular artists like Van Gogh always get a pass especially with women because they register as celebrities.
