F YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous thread: >>3965314

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started.

Sticky: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

This thread let's try to well define and shade our forms to elevate our work!

Does anyone know of any books/video tutorials on gouache that start at square 0? It's my first time trying paint after years of only using graphite and charcoal and I don't know ANYTHING, I don't know what my ratio of paint to water should be, I don't know how much paint should be on the brush for each stroke, I don't know how to not contaminate my colors without meticulously cleaning the brush between each stroke, I don't know when I should be blending colors on the palette vs on the canvas (or how to actually blend anything without ending up with mud). Basically I'm looking for the drawabox of painting (specifically gouache) that will explain all this physical stuff and then work from there.

Not really lol.
Line drawings alone can look surprisingly realistic, but your lines have to actually match how the subject looks. Trace over the crease of his mouth in Photoshop or something, and compare that line to the line that you originally drew for the crease of his mouth. You weren't even close.
Besides just lines, you can also bring in tone to make drawings more realistic. Large patches of color that gradually shift from one color to another (in the case of your black and white photo, gradually shifting from grey to white).
Basically, just start with any "how to draw" book.

It's not rocket science, it's water based paint. How much water? Dunno. Each painting is different. Each artist's preference is different, and they learn how much, by trying it. You have to be willing to experiment and take risks as an artist, you're not going to get step by step instructions like this.

Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Winsor-Newton-Cotman-Watercolor-Blue/dp/B002M3KEKO?ref_=bl_dp_s_web_2603784011
You don't need a gazillion colors, and you'd just need to throw a pad of watercolor paper in, to get started, as that comes with a brush. Stick with known brands, like Winsor & Newton, as the "kits" where you get everything are cheap chinese knockoffs.
A decent pad of paper like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Arches-Watercolor-Paper-pound-Press/dp/B01EQHJH10/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=watercolor+pad&qid=1560375263&s=gateway&sr=8-9

Looking nice so far. Push the dark values deeper, you are painting Chiaroscuro style after all where the darkest parts are still very alive. David's head i slightly tilted on the ref it appears straight on yours keep that in mind. Check the SCM muscle (that V shaped one on the front of the neck) on the ref it is more pronounced and lighter running up by the adam's apple.

Keep going hope to see it finished.

You basically have three challenges to work on, and you're at square one in all of them. Which is fine, that's what being a /beg/ is all about. The three areas are:

1) Just learning how to draw in general, independent of any particular thing you're drawing. This primarily means, being able to put your lines where you want them, and also the quality of your linework - being able to have lines transition from light to dark, thick to thin, having dynamic lines rather than the same type of uniform line everywhere. Linework is VERY IMPORTANT and a lot of beginners overlook it. Digital is shit for learning all of this because it doesn't give you the immediate tactile feedback that pencil and paper does, it's not helping you build up artist's intuition, so I'd recommend ditching the tablet for a while and just using pencil.

2) Being able to draw the individual features - eyes, nose, mouth - in a way that's both anatomically correct (as far as the style you're working in requires) and appealing (this is where your linework and your ability to work with tone come into play).

3) Being able to assemble those features correctly on a 3D head.

Once you've made progress in all those areas, THEN you'll start to see a good head come together.

You've got to get a lot of pencil mileage under your belt before you'll be able to start producing work you're satisfied with, so you may as well just play around with whatever you feel like and not worry about how exactly it turns out, as long as you're drawing. Try experimenting with drawing just individual features - learn how to draw just a good eye, or a good nose. That'll be easier than tackling the whole head.

>> No.3970291

>>3970047
The biggest problem I have is that I've yet to see a digital photo do justice to a Caravaggio. Same for most artists, but especially for artists like Caravaggio, or Rembrandt, who used rich, dark hues in their work, that doesn't translate well to film, or to digital. Rembrandt's paintings in person are a wonder, because he managed to make dark hues and values almost glow, because of how he layered paint. Caravaggios in person are glorious in their color - almost all of which is flattened and blown out in poor photos like the one you're working from. It's not your fault - digital is a poor form to study actual paintings from, because it's how a digital sensor translates the lightwaves it's receiving, which is different from how the eye does. And then it's blown out more and more with each generation of the file, until you get blown out, contrasty paintings like this, that can't really teach you how Caravaggio approached color, especially cool and warm color, which was a vital part of his technique. That's why museums often let artists work on site, copying the painting, in good lighting, to unlock what's there. This image, I'm thinking is too blown out to really teach you much.
As a beginner piece, it's fine? I guess? But I would pick work that's clearer to see, especially a wider range of hues and values, before diving in one a painting like this where you really can't see what's going on, in a way that would teach you anything. Even for advanced work, it's not a very good painting to work from, unless you live in Spain where it's hanging, so you can see what he was really doing there.

Well usually I just keep grinding fundies with the same two three characters because I like drawing them, then I try a more extreme or dynamic pose and it looks so goddamn awful that I drop it after the rough sketching phase since it can’t be salvaged. I don’t post these ones since works that lack everything fundamentally are the most annoying to crit for people. I just post stuff that I think looks good enough here.

As for what I want to go for, I wanna aim for the level where my art looks like it could pass as game concept art or something like that. More interesting composition with multiple characters and dynamic action poses.
Then I’ll try to get things to look like a convincing manga. That’s all the goals I have for now.

Sorry, that's how it goes, not everyone cares enough to type up a critique, it's a bit too much effort to do regularly. And most of us begs are too retarded to properly analyze what's wrong with a drawing.

Anyway, keep constructing. the two heads with the horns and the side perspective look the best.

Something about your faces do seem off though. It might be the eyes. Try moving them a bit farther away from each other, that's my best guess. (Usually, for more realistic proportions) The distance between eyes must be enough to fit a third eye between them (the left side head's eyes are too close).
Also your realistic eyes look too much like symmetric ellipses, but the shape is a lot more asymmetric than that. Study a bit.

Other than that the rest of the heads with the construction look mostly solid. solid

(the girl's face on the left with the front view isn't so bad, try more construction next time so her head isn't deformed.

These aren't gesture drawings. They're poses.

Gesture is just a way to learn how to look at a figure, and how to put expression and implied energy and flow into a stick figure. It's to teach you how to move past rigid, doll like poses, and show movement in figures in a natural way. That's why it's not fully rendered figures, it's just enough to indicate that it's a person, but the most important thing is communicating the movement and expression of the form.

Haven't had a lot of time lately so I thought doing this kind of rough sketches would be good, but I've yet to found an explanaiton/tutorial on what to do exactly. I'm not using a limited number of values, not sure if that matters.

When rendering I usally use the largest brush I can and then trim things down to shapes with the eraser but here I used a small brush and kinda colored as if I was using color pencils. Is that okay in this context or should I still 'paint like an sculptor'?

For both of these, your shadows can be WAY more shadowy - right now these both look super duper flat. You gotta really look for all the shadows in 3d objects and draw them. Shade in 0 if it's the brightest point, if it's the nonbrightest point shade 1/4th, shade the actual shadow in like 3/4ths and then use the really dark stuff for the core shadow and the area underneath (usually shadows have a couple layers cause ambient light hits them). Try drawing a circle and adding shadow till it looks like a ball, it's a really good exercise (find a reference).
For your one from memory, it seems like you forgot about the 3d structure near the top - the stem should be occluded.

Finger shading is fine, also using hatchmarks or stipples are fine. Use a tormillion blending stump if you wanna get fancier, it gives you more control

Whenever I wanna do some sketching I go to this lines of action site - https://line-of-action.com/
And just draw naked people for a half hour. It's great practice. Drawing from life is better than drawing from your imagination - i think you learn more

>>3971251
I feel like your use of lines to draw the entire clothing texture meant that the value scale of the whole image is strange, like every line that is supposed to add texture actually makes it darker

Also I think the focus of the drawing is supposed to be on her missing hands but that part has way less effort spent on it than the dress. Put the most detail into the main focus of the drawing. I can't even relly see her other hand because the liens of it are so undeveloped and they get lost into teh complicated dress. And her stumps look cartoonish.

Oh wait - are those not stump hands? Are those supposed to be fingers? Yeeeeeah you gotta focus WAY more on what the hand is supposed to look like if that's gonna be the main focus of your drawing.

Dope. Great observation skills, great use of suggesting texture without drawing all of it, especially on the chicken. They feel anatomical and 3d. The chicken is the best then the turtle and the dog is worst. Dog looks kinda flat and the texture of the fur means you can't see shadows vs light - your way of suggesting texture on teh chicken was much better.

For texture, focus on - showing texture where it breaks the silluette, small suggestions of texture like the chicken breast and neck feaethers, and also modulating how much texture you draw by how much light is hitting that area - if an area is well lit don't cover it in lots of obsessive texture liens, it will look dark, that's what happened to the dogs face. and a bit with the turtles back.

But seriously dude these are good

Generally choosing complementary colors and working with a bunch of hues, shades and tints based off those two colors is a powerful choice.
You can also do split complements or all desaturated to have them look well together.

I'd do some drawings that are abstract, just with color, and play with it. Try to make pleasing designs of color with good contrast and movement and color balance.

Also for your actual drawing, you gotta imagine the actual light source and paint in the colors based on that. That includes specific geometry casting specific shadows based on a specific light source. This is all middle value - there's nothing truely dark or truely white in it (pass it through a greyscale filter to see)

there's some really weird stuff in here, like the books being light purple instead of in shadows, a random highlight on one bottle but not on the other bottle, and no clear light source in teh whole scene. Is it supposed to be candlelit? Cause your candle flame is dark AF.

How big are these? I feel like my instict is to tell you to draw on a bigger canvas. I think you can get even more detailed. Are you using actual Charcoal paper? It is very good.
I think your perceptionn of anatomy is good, especially on the top one - bottom one's a little flatter, eyes are a bit too small.
Anyway overall your proportions and anatomy are good and so are your shadows but I think you need more nuance in the midtones. You can make these things look exactly like skin if you keep working em. Try putting them on the wall and stepping backwards, or flipping them both upside down.

Overall dude, they're great and I love seeing charcoal on here. definitely make more soon!

okay, for example, after setting the block in values, do you guys check if the edge is planar or spherical then do transitions?

Oh nice Proko is a great source.
You're drawinngs aren't bad dude- they clearly show the form and the gesture. I think a few contour lines could show the 3d form, and it might help to think about the 'ribs and hips' of the figure (see the proko video on gesture)
Draw a whole bunch more from lines of action. This is a good track

Core shadow is what separates shadow family from light family, it's one of the darkest shadows
Mid tones are light family, what you see between core and the highest light value

>>3971890
>do you guys check if the edge is planar or spherical then do transitions?
i don't know if i get what you mean

>every change of plane is a change on value:
>if it's a hard edge like a box the change is 2 steps
1 plane with more light // 1 plane with less light

> if it's a soft edge like a ball it wraps around the form
you use more value steps and use a soft edge core shadow
the smoother the value steps the smoother the planes on the form

I recommend "Figure Drawing for Artists - Steve Huston" it made me understand pretty well

how do y'all deal with feeling directionless when being self-taught? I try and break it up so I study different subjects every day (anatomy, figure, perspective, composition, etc) but I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of skills I'll need

books keep you busy and give some direction
don't try to study perspective gesture anatomy value and all that different subjects in a very short time space
focus more on what you want to improve or the area you feel lacking

getting better, once i deliberately start stylizing i'm sure i'll get faster too
foreshortening quads is difficult, and i need to keep in mind that gesture doesn't perfectly translate into bone structure; i drew the knees and calves bent. in addition drawing legs connecting to the pelvis is hard if they're not going straight down. have to try to determine when the adductors, hamstrings and ass should be visible
need to challenge myself with more actual figures rather floating torsos
i think i should start learning to render properly so i can start making finished products quickly

you can try some simple cell shading and then move to full render

Look up Felicia from Darkstalkers, that style may give you some ideas on your current stuff

I mean wherever you add a line, it makes that area look darker. I think you added too many texture lines and it made areas look darker than they should have. You wanna plan your darkness for shadow areas and not just put it everywhere the texture is. It's actually hard to distingish the arm from the dress because of this, and well, the legibility of the limbs ought to be like the most important thing to understanding the image.

I definitely agree and it's something I just figured out, I'm going to start to think more about each line I ink and really observe the forms I'm inking, and the forms around it. As you can see I've marked down what I thought would look cool with little observation
