I'm aware proportions are all clunky,
I'm just trying to learn how to paint in photoshop.

Am I supposed to use use mixer brush?
Opacity sensitive to pressure?

I'm aware photoshop is more powerful than csp, but, I think I do much better there . . .

It clearly looks like a futuristic room with automatized gates.
I'd just suggest to add a bit more detail to the textures (which the concept art kind of suggests), and make it look a bit less 'smooth' and more tech-like.

Quick environment study before I go to work. Want to give my hand at painting beautiful areas like backwoods, marshes, trails and parks, etc. Probably the way to go about it would be to use "earthy" tones and a limited palette. Guess it'll be something to figure out as I go along.

Biggest thing you want to do is smooth your edges and blend your colors. You can simply decrease your opacity on various brushes and play with flow (look at CtrlPaint.com tutorials on digital painting) and you'll see how different your results will be.
>Am I supposed to use mixer brush? Opacity sensitive to pressure?
Generally I set my opacity to specific number I'm comfortable with such as 20% and use it "build up" my values and tone, going over strokes again and again. Having it set to "pressure" will make it more like a watercolor brush. Play with your settings a little and look at tutorials and see what you like to play with before you go diving into making studies.

Still got a shitload of work to do and stuff to fix. Having gigantic problems with the lighting. I'll probably end up pulling some more refs out to fix things. The colour harmony isn't working out very well, I feel, but I like the ambiance so far. Feedback would be highly appreciated. Got a couple of weird tangents on the top of the furnace and far left as well I have to look at.

What exactly are you trying to study with this one? Accuracy? Stylisation? I think her face is too wide. I've been experimenting with crosshatching lately as well and have the same issue I think you do. Strokes feeling a bit random. I think the lighting coming from both the back and the front of the blacksmith flattens the image. I would place the diffuse light on the right side of the image, putting some light on the little dragon in the foreground and maybe doing something with subsurface scattering on its wing. I think if you have a busy foreground element you can't make it dark.
I also think having the diffuse light coming off camera gives you more narrative depth, it feels more like you're entering the shop, no?
Sorry for the shitty overlay done with a mouse.

I agree that the lighting I'm using flattens the image. But I like your light solution less than what I have right now. I'll see if I can fix it somehow without changing the composition too much. Gonna test some night lighting instead to see if that may work better. While I don't think it works on this illustration I'll keep your advice on light coming in from the viewer's side for future stuff. It's solid advice. Thanks for your time, man.

Can't see really anything wrong with the proportions. Like the coloring, minimal but gives a watercolor-esque feeling. Face feels kind of androgynous but maybe it's just me and besides if that's what you're going for then it's great.

>>3965126
Like another has said, the photo ref you're using would be helpful. The perspective looks off to me though anyway, but the ref would help. It looks like you're somewhat of a beginner; so not using a ref is a bad idea if you don't have one. (Even experienced artists can and should use refs imo).

>>3964814
Nice use of texture to differentiate the figures. Super dynamic positions for them as well. I still sort of feel like they blend together a tiny bit, so maybe bolder/more dynamic outline lines? Not sure though. Feel like bolder/varying outlines would do the dynamic poses more justice.

The colors are pretty good, overall lighting scheme works, Shading is decent on the dress but too complicated on the shirt and terrible on the legs. Biggest problem is your lineart and anatomy The neck is fucked, you should study the neck's anatomy and relationship to the torso and skull, there's a couple good vids on it, including one by REIQ. The extended leg's anatomy is also fucked but I like the shading on the tucked boot. In fact the extended leg is far too long and is disjointed, indicating poor understanding of pelvic anatomy.
I really recommend working traditionally and drawing figures/anatomy for a while, maybe porting the best work into digital to color. I think people are usually either good at lineart or shading and have to learn the other.
>>3966970
Disjointed head perspective, should at least be moved to the left. Decent shot at the hand but the lack of pocket bulge on the other hand ruins the work. Mouth should be simplified. Irises look like discs but should look like shallow orbs, the issue wouldnt be present but your eyes are super big and thus the shape of the iris is noticeably off. Leg anatomy is weak.

Block in your background just as much as you do with your initial sketch.

Too many people here make a character and then plop in some jarringly poor background which they just did as an afterthought. Give the background more consideration in the early parts of planning your drawing. A good background is intentional, not an afterthought. You should know what you're doing with that space and how it will serve the composition before you do what you did.

Look at Steve Huston's figurative paintings. Many of the backgrounds in them are very abstract or impressionsitic, but he designs them 100% with the foreground figures in mind. Often he will change the brushstrokes of the space outside the figures to enhance the sense of movement, have the figures fade into the dark tones of the background, etc. In this one the cool bluish flesh tones seem to reflect in onto the background to enhance the luminosity of the painting.

Rendering just means adding all of the shading and details you'd find in a finished or "complete" drawing in this case.

Thats a pretty decent drawing, on first glance it looks impressive due to the hatching with the pen. However the right hand, the face, and the left arm are all far too inaccurate and look pretty ugly as a result. The proportions of the face is especially fucked - forehead to hairline is too long, mouth is too far below nose and too wide making her look like a monkey, etc.

Basically those are things you need make sure look good before committing to if you're rendering with a pen especially.

Basically when you're in the mode of drawing directly from a reference photo it comes down to your knowledge of the subject itself and how good you are at observational drawing - judging line and proportion and all of that.

Just keep drawing from observation - your eye and hand will get better at interpreting what you see the more you do it. Preferably from life because its easier to judge the 3 dimensionality of shapes than photographs.

Just keep practicing figure drawing and anatomy in whatever mode you like - if you understand how all of the features are supposed to look you will not let yourself be okay with ugly looking mistakes that look unnatural.

Jesus that kids head is gigantic. Megamind ass having kid. IQ in the 4 digits looking ass. Kids gunna need a kickstand for that pillar. Ultra dome superior race hive mind baby looking ass. Marvel villain floaty head dreaming up detailed plots to destroy the multiverse. Smug little fucker too looking at it. With a head that big no wonder it looks like it thinks it’s better than me since it’s egos bigger than that eclipse maker. How did a woman even push this Mount Rushmore size mass out her baby puker? Throw a orange at it.....Bet it floats around that dwarf planet.

If you put that in front of someone and ask them them what is, you are going to get a bunch of different answers due to it not looking like anything specific, so I could be anything. I live in vancouver where there happens to be a lot of animation/game/movie studios so, not that it's easy to get work but there is quite a bit of work available. It just might not be as cool as what you'd like to be doing. I got lucky with my last job as I got to paint realistic fantasyish environments. If you get good enough theres a possibility of studios in other countries hiring you and sponsoring your immigration. I'm pretty sure I almost got a job at sixmorevodca in Berlin, i had an interview with Marko and did an art test and all that sadly it didn't pan out. But anyway you need to focus on your own art and expressing your own creative vision, develop your voice and if you refine it eventually people will notice that's how you get the good jobs.
